That's funny. I heard that there's a large number of North Korean stamp collectors. They purchased stamps mainly from North Korean postal & China. There was a stamp survey in North Korea around 1990's. The survey indicated they like to collect North Korea, South Korea, Great Britain, Mongolia, Calligraphy Art (China only) & Disney World (USA only)..........I always like to include North Korean stamp collectors whenever I conduct a survey.
Anyway, everyone are welcome to take the stamp survey: What are your preferred 5 nations ?

EUROPE- Great Britain wins while Germany & France trailed closely. Iceland was a big surprise, this tiny island nation finished 7th place and got near to TOP FIVE NATION. The Philately of Iceland ended in 2019 after 90 years of service. Europe continues to be very competitive receiving most votes in this survey. PS- World's first stamp issued by Great Britain's Penny Black on May 1, 1840.
AFRICA- Egypt wins while South Africa trailed closely. The demand for African stamps is still low. Perhaps it's because of Equatorial Guinea. However, Africa does have some of the most beautiful stamps in the world especially Topical (Animals & Flowers).
ASIA- Japan wins easily with no competitors. China was once very popular, but didn't do well in this year's survey. Middle East is almost non exist due to large number of forgeries & suspicious post marks. Central Asian nations were totally invisible due to extreme difficulties of obtaining their stamps.
NORTH AMERICA- United States wins, but got a strong challenge from Canada. Both nations make it to TOP FIVE NATION. This is not a surprise because they have done well consistently over the years. I was surprised that Mexico didn't even make it to the survey because it's located next to the United States.
SOUTH AMERICA- Chile wins while the rest trailed behind. The lack of demand for South American stamps continues, but I think more collectors are beginning to focus on this region. This continent has the most expensive stamp in the world (1856 British Guiana $9.5 million). Actually, there is a person in this survey that collect Guyana (British Guiana)
OCEANIA- Australia wins while New Zealand trailed closely and the rest are off the radar. Australia & New Zealand have dominated in this region for decades due to global demands for their stamps. However, Papua New Guinea may post a strong challenge in near future due to their surge of popularity. Their numbers have been increasing each year as more & more collectors are specializing in Papua New Guinea.
If you put Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in with Canada the US ties for 2nd almost 3rd place. That surprises me, especially for a US based site. Great job Lanuii.
A possible data point is the home country of the collector.
The percentages are the most interesting.
Great Britain...7.9%
United States...6.5%
Canada..........5.9%
Germany.........5.6%
France..........4.4%
The top 5 only accounts for 30.2%
Europe..........54%
Africa...........6%
North America...15%
South America....4%
Asia............12%
Oceania..........6%
Others...........3%
Ian,
How did you come by those percentages for the individual countries?
My calculations seem to be quite different.
Total no of "votes" is 341.
Take GB figure, 27 as a % of 341 = 7.9%
The area figures are rounded up or down so may not be exact.
From a sellers point of view these figures are extremely interesting.
Thanks for the calculations guys, this gives a broader view of the survey. I was going to do the percentage, but I got lazy.
Angore, you're right. Most collectors would vote for their home country. That's natural. Since most voters in Stamporama are American, the home field advantage goes to the United States.
Ernieinjax, You're right. Votes can be split if people voted cities, but not the nation. That's what happened to France & Netherlands. Both nations have many colonies and the votes got split. As a result, France barely make it Top Five, but Netherlands didn't.
However, this didn't happened to Great Britain. The British has the most colonies in the world. In this survey, many voted for British colonies, but not for Great Britain. Even with so many split votes, Great Britain still received a lot of votes. This compensate the votes they lost on "split"..Great Britain is probably the only country to received votes from all 5 continents. This indicated how strong Great Britain is on international stage.
Thanks Ian.
For some reason I came up with a total of 265 votes....
Aye It can be difficult when using only fingers and toes when counting.
"fingers and toes when counting"
The Ranking - Top 10 with most votes. The Top 10 nations combined makes up 61.88% (164/265 X 100 = 61.88%). This indicate that you're likely to have stamps from Top 10.
#1--Great Britain (EUROPE)
#2--United States (N.AMERICA)
#3--Canada (N.AMERICA)
#4--Germany (EUROPE)
#5--France (EUROPE)
#6--Japan (ASIA)
#7--Iceland (EUROPE)
#8--Australia (OCEANIA)
#9--Denmark/Fr.colonies/Greenland/Italy (EUROPE)
#10--Netherlands/New Zealand (EUROPE/OCEANIA)
The main reason conducting this survey is to see if there's any major shift during the Corona Virus Pandemic, but the result shows there isn't. However, Iceland & Greenland were a big surprise. Greenland exist under the shadow of Denmark with low population while Iceland Post ceased its operation & has stop issuing new stamps this year.
.
Both island came into this survey with huge disadvantages, yet remarkably-they finished on Top 10. I didn't vote for Greenland or Iceland, but I recommend Stamporama create a category for Greenland & Iceland.
Hi Lanuii,
I'm pleased to say that while Iceland Post announced it was closing its philatelic bureau it still seems to be issuing attractive stamps.
The latest one from March 2020 celebrates Iceland's 50 years of membership of EFTA, the European Free Trade Association:
There is more information on:
Iceland-50-years-a-member-of-efta-since-march-1-1970-self-adhesive-1000g-domestic
The survey reflects the comments by those that chose to participate. It may be a statement on who is now more active in posts. For example, it could be compared to the number of unique members (those that sign in) during the period of the survey. This would give you a participation rate.
There were 341 "Votes" if 5 per member therefore approximately 68 members took part, which is a pretty miserable figure.
"The survey reflects the comments by those that chose to participate."
I agree with these sentiments fully.
I really like going through a worldwide kiloware mixture and sorting the stamps into different countries. If a mixture has a large component from a particular country, then I get interested in that country and, where possible, research the history of its stamps.
Then another batch of stamps comes along and I'm pulled in another direction.
I think I need to make the jump to focus on a particular country or countries and start organising them into a collection that displays them appropriately.
But then another kiloware collection comes along and I'm back to square one!
Another interesting question might be: How did we decide to collect the areas we collect and why do we branch into other areas, if we do?
The philatelic journey is a topic but that could be in a different threa,
An update on Iceland...
I've just seen the following post from yesterday on the icelandicstamps Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/icelandicstamps/
"It has been announced that 2020 will see the last of Iceland's stamp issues.
Two issues are planned this year, the first one today May 7th and the second and last one is scheduled for October 29th.
For the first Icelandic stamp issue of 2020, eleven new stamps will be released in eight series.
As these will be Iceland Post's very last issues, we hope you will appreciate the care and dedication put into their making and design.
We also encourage you to place your order early."
The issue of eleven stamps included the EFTA one that I showed earlier on this thread.
I hope in the reorganisation of the postal service that Iceland will continue with new issues in the longer term and, if so, that they can produce stamps with the same high quality.
Thanks for the update on Iceland stamp. Iceland will contract it out to some company to produce new stamp (I read an article about that last week). Anyway, congratulations to Iceland rank #7 in this survey
PS- I wonder if there's a better way to have everyone participate the survey ?
" ... Iceland will contract it out to some company to produce new stamps ..."
And the new company will start to flood the market with shoddily produced trash that has little to no connection with Iceland or its environs. Two years later Iceland will join the sheikdoms and pre-1990 Iron Countries in most collector's minds.
Amen
Leaders of the World part 2!
Dear Everyone, I'm conducting a stamp survey for 2020. A research to see if there's a shift in nations that Collectors prefer. In past years, the top 5 nations were Great Britain, United States, Australia, China & Germany.
.
What are 5 nations that you prefer to collect ? .......It's ok if you have more than 5 prefer nations. This thread will end after 2 weeks & the result will be posted on May 1. Thank you for participating.

Their numbers have been increasing each year as more & more collectors are specializing in Papua New Guinea.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
If you put Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in with Canada the US ties for 2nd almost 3rd place. That surprises me, especially for a US based site. Great job Lanuii.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
A possible data point is the home country of the collector.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
The percentages are the most interesting.
Great Britain...7.9%
United States...6.5%
Canada..........5.9%
Germany.........5.6%
France..........4.4%
The top 5 only accounts for 30.2%
Europe..........54%
Africa...........6%
North America...15%
South America....4%
Asia............12%
Oceania..........6%
Others...........3%
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
Ian,
How did you come by those percentages for the individual countries?
My calculations seem to be quite different.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
Total no of "votes" is 341.
Take GB figure, 27 as a % of 341 = 7.9%
The area figures are rounded up or down so may not be exact.
From a sellers point of view these figures are extremely interesting.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
This indicated how strong Great Britain is on international stage.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
Thanks Ian.
For some reason I came up with a total of 265 votes....
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
Aye It can be difficult when using only fingers and toes when counting.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
"fingers and toes when counting"
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
The Ranking - Top 10 with most votes. The Top 10 nations combined makes up 61.88% (164/265 X 100 = 61.88%). This indicate that you're likely to have stamps from Top 10.
#1--Great Britain (EUROPE)
#2--United States (N.AMERICA)
#3--Canada (N.AMERICA)
#4--Germany (EUROPE)
#5--France (EUROPE)
#6--Japan (ASIA)
#7--Iceland (EUROPE)
#8--Australia (OCEANIA)
#9--Denmark/Fr.colonies/Greenland/Italy (EUROPE)
#10--Netherlands/New Zealand (EUROPE/OCEANIA)
The main reason conducting this survey is to see if there's any major shift during the Corona Virus Pandemic, but the result shows there isn't. However, Iceland & Greenland were a big surprise. Greenland exist under the shadow of Denmark with low population while Iceland Post ceased its operation & has stop issuing new stamps this year.
.
Both island came into this survey with huge disadvantages, yet remarkably-they finished on Top 10. I didn't vote for Greenland or Iceland, but I recommend Stamporama create a category for Greenland & Iceland.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
Hi Lanuii,
I'm pleased to say that while Iceland Post announced it was closing its philatelic bureau it still seems to be issuing attractive stamps.
The latest one from March 2020 celebrates Iceland's 50 years of membership of EFTA, the European Free Trade Association:

re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
The survey reflects the comments by those that chose to participate. It may be a statement on who is now more active in posts. For example, it could be compared to the number of unique members (those that sign in) during the period of the survey. This would give you a participation rate.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
There were 341 "Votes" if 5 per member therefore approximately 68 members took part, which is a pretty miserable figure.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
"The survey reflects the comments by those that chose to participate."
I agree with these sentiments fully.
I really like going through a worldwide kiloware mixture and sorting the stamps into different countries. If a mixture has a large component from a particular country, then I get interested in that country and, where possible, research the history of its stamps.
Then another batch of stamps comes along and I'm pulled in another direction.
I think I need to make the jump to focus on a particular country or countries and start organising them into a collection that displays them appropriately.
But then another kiloware collection comes along and I'm back to square one!
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
Another interesting question might be: How did we decide to collect the areas we collect and why do we branch into other areas, if we do?
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result

I hope in the reorganisation of the postal service that Iceland will continue with new issues in the longer term and, if so, that they can produce stamps with the same high quality.
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
Thanks for the update on Iceland stamp. Iceland will contract it out to some company to produce new stamp (I read an article about that last week). Anyway, congratulations to Iceland rank #7 in this survey
PS- I wonder if there's a better way to have everyone participate the survey ?
re: 2020 STAMP SURVEY - Result
" ... Iceland will contract it out to some company to produce new stamps ..."
And the new company will start to flood the market with shoddily produced trash that has little to no connection with Iceland or its environs. Two years later Iceland will join the sheikdoms and pre-1990 Iron Countries in most collector's minds.
Amen
