Tim,
Interesting idea! My "Penny Black" is 'GE'
Years ago I started to plate the Inverted Jenny by watching major online auctions and capturing the images for C3a and placing the images in the proper sequence in spreadsheet. The I discovered that someone had already done it and you could get a copy for a modest sum! Destroyed the incentive. But trying for a plating of the Penny Black from SOR members sounds intriguing.
Good luck,
George
PS I'll scan my Penny Black and post if you want to go that way.
Here's mine:
Bob
Here is my 'GE'
George
I've read about and looked at Penny Blacks and Two Penny Blues....I want them!!!! Is there any way to get them for less than $250-$300? I've tried the sources that I know and they are all out of my price range. Should I just keep saving up for them?
Lisa,
Not long ago I read in a Stanley Gibbons newsletter that Chinese collectors were going nuts over Penny Blacks, and paying big bucks for them. There are a few "Buy it now" offers on eBay for a hundred dollars or thereabouts, but most are a lot more. Good luck!
Bob
@Lisa
You can buy a decent looking, fault free Penny Black in the $100-$150 range. It will typically be 3 clear margins and close on the 4th side. A pretty copy with 4 full margins will start around $200. A 3 margin copy, slightly cut into on the 4th side will typically be available for about $75.

Here's my "hoard":
Roy and Debbie's pair!

Here's mine: FA
@Lisa, there are several available at BidStart. They start at $63.00 and go up.
Searching over there can be a nightmare at times. Here is the search that I used:
http://www.bidstart.com/search_results.php?keywords=great+britain+1&category=1873&advsrc=restricted&viewSize=75
After clicking on the link, click on RESTRICTED when you get there to narrow down the search some more.
Avoid paying alot for this stamp. It is actually fairly common and easy to find.
Here's a few I have up for trade. (Please note the cover is not available for trade).

OK, here is where we are up to. I have created a page that I call The Penny Page which you can access by clicking here. I have a link to The Penny Page on the home page and under Home in the menu above. Each of the Penny Blacks that you have told me about show in this page with a yellow background. Mouse over the yellow area and you will see the username of the person who owns that stamp.
If you don't see the yellow area when you go to The Penny Page, hold down your SHIFT Key and click on the refresh button on your browser. You might have to do this a couple of times. Could someone using a IE on a Windows computer please check that the mouse over of the owners name is working for me.
Keep them coming everyone. I know there are more people in Stamporama who have a Penny Black or two.
Regards ... Tim.
I have taken the images of the Penny Blacks posted in this thread and placed them in the proper position on a pdf page. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader (Free) to view the image of the plate as it is completed. The sheet can be viewed by clicking on the following link: SOR Penny Black Sheet
George aka biggeorge
Well done George. Thanks for that.
Tim.
Tim- It works with IE.

PAPA BRAVO (used)
John Derry
P.S. I recall seeing, about a year or two ago, a complete sheet
of used "Penny Blacks" offered by a Hong Kong stamp dealer
for US $32,000.00.
@Perry, thanks for including your DH.
@John, thanks for showing us your framed Penny Black. I assume that "PAPA BRAVO" indicates that your Penny Black is a PB and have updated the Stamporama Penny Page as such. Please correct me if I have misunderstood. We Australian/Americans are a bit thick sometimes.
Keep them coming everyone. Bob P (Parkinlot) I know you have a beautiful example to add to the collection.
In case you have missed it here is the Penny Page: /discboard/disc_penny_page.php.

Thanks Andy. I updated the Penny Page.

Here are my Penny Blacks
AA
QK
NJ
RH
Tim, I wish the image of the one I sent you was mine...
All right! I was wondering who was going to have the "AA"!
I have seen several Penny Blacks on EBay that have red cancels like the ones Roy has shown. They look a lot like red just smeared on the stamp. Can anyone educate me about what the red is, where it came from and when?
Thank you in advance!!
Check out the first page of this Stamporama Exhibit
Roy
Lisa,
When the Penny Black was first issued the British PO used black ink to cancel the stamps. But the black ink on black stamps made it hard to see the cancel. They then switched to the red ink so it could be seen better. Then they decided to ditch the black stamp altogether and switched to red stamps using the same plates as the Penny Black.
Bob
Sorry Bob, you have it the wrong way around. Red first, then black. See the link to the exhibit in my post above.
Roy
You are right Roy...
Roy - that is a fantastic exhibit and super helpful!
Bob,
I have added your four to the Penny Page. We are getting quite a lot of yellow filled in. I wonder who will have the TL. I haven't heard much from our UK friends, and Jan-Simon I'm sure you have a Penny Black to add.
Regards ... Tim.
I am sorry Tim, the Penny Black (and most of the other early Great-Britain) is still on my wishlist. Long term objective, I am afraid.
Jan-Simon
p.s. nice initiative!
Tim,
You should try to find a nice TA.
Looking at the SOR Penny Black PDF gets me thinking about a little PB BINGO
I have updated the pdf reconstruction of the SOR Penny Blacks. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader (Free) to view the image of the plate as it is completed. The sheet can be viewed by clicking on the following link: SOR Penny Black Sheet. I have also loaded the Reconstruction as a web page.
George aka biggeorge
I have an HE.........Chris
Thanks Chris.
Regards ... Tim.
I have a JE, but can't get the scan posted in real colors, it wants to put colored bars on the stamp. Maybe later.
Mike
Thanks Mike, I updated the Penny Page with your JE.
Regards ... Tim.
I had to go and look as it has been so long since Ienjoyed loolikg at my copy which it turns out is "H" & "F".
Tim
My contribution:
Best Wishes from Scotland
Tom
Charlie and Tom,
Thanks for your contribution. It is quite amazing, but we haven't had a duplication yet.
Regards ... Tim.
David Bushard (Androcles) just sent me his contribution to the Penny Page, an "HB".
This is quite amazing really, we haven't run into a duplicate yet.
Regards ... Tim.
I was just sorting through a box of Great Britain event covers and came across this:
The "cinderella" Penny Black is actually affixed to the cover, not printed.
Kinda neat!
Roy
It was either at Interphil'76 or CAPEX '78 that the British Post Office used large paper bags that had an entire sheet of the GB #1 printed on both sides for sales. Was a neat bag. I kept it for a number of years. Would be nice if I still had it though.
Tim,
I suspect that some members checked their letters against what is on the chart and if theirs were already reported decided not to mention the duplication.
I know i checked and was glad mine were different. I am not sure I would have mentioned them were they already reorted.
Picked up another one today:
BC
Liverpool to Glasgow, Sept. 1, 1840
Roy
Hey Roy,
That is quite a find. Where did you manage to procure it from? I have added it to the Penny Page.
Regards ... Tim
Ps Does everyone know that if you let your mouse hover over the yellow sections on the Penny Page, you will see which member has offered that stamp to this project.
I just checked mine - it is ID.
Josh
Thanks Josh, I added your "ID" to the Penny Page.
Tim.
Les sent me in his contribution to the Penny Page, an NC. Thanks Les. I'm sorry it has taken me a few days to put it on the page.
Regards ... Tim.
Tim,
Here's the scan of my JE. Switched back to my OLD computer and everything works better now.
i was surprised to see that i actually have a "PA" in my set, but its in pretty sad shape..... if i had another, this one would get tossed! it's so bad, i dont dare scan it for having my non-existent stamp collecting license revoked
Thanks Mark, I added your PA to the Penny Page. We are filling the sheet in stamp by stamp.
Regards ... Tim.
Mark, while I am an avid proponent of tossing damaged stamps that are worthless (cat less than $1), I would not toss a GB #1, no matter what its condition. There are plenty of people who want/need the stamp in their collection, and will trade or buy it from you.
I just received this Penny Black from a purchase on ebay. It has an interesting brown cancel. It was listed as SG#2. As I don't have an SG catalog and so I don't understand why it would be number 2 rather than number 1. Can someone help me with this?
Regards ... Tim.
PS. I added this to the Penny Page.
Tim, here's the difference between Scott and SG on the 1840 issues:
Scott #1 = SG #1 through 3
Scott #2 = SG #4 through 6
SG #2 is for the black color variety (Scott #1a). SG #1 s for intense black (Scott #1), and #3 for gray-black (worn plate)(Scott #1b)
Hi Michael,
Thank you very much for the info. My Scott 2007 cat doesn't differentiate the 1a and 1b from the 1. Could you possibly give me the cat value for the 1a?
Regards ... TIm.
Happy Birthday to the Penny Black!!! 172 Years old Today...
Tim, Scott lists the 1a and 1b in the Classic Specialized Catalog. My catalog is from 2009. The 1a is $9,250 unused and $400 used. Maybe someone with a newer Classic Catalog can update the values.
Per Scott Classic 2011:
Mint Used
1 1p black 7,500 325
1a 1p intense black 16,000 475
1b 1p gray black 15,000 450
1c Inverted Watermark 36,500 2,250
1d Blued paper, from 67,500 650
George (aka biggeorge)
Thank you both Michael and George for the info.
Regards ... Tim.
I am now the proud owner of an HB!
Well done Lisa. Can you scan it and show us?
Regards ... Tim.
Here it is!
It's in a mount and behind a plastic cover along with a certificate of authenticity. I think it's a decent scan though.
She's very nice, Lisa, with 3 nice margins, and a wonderfully crisp red Maltese cross. congratulations. It's lovely to see someone able to garner the wonders of this hobby with such gusto as you obviously have, and it's a joy for me to watch, excited vicariously.
David
Thank you, David! I'm like a kid in a candy shop, aren't I?
Lisa,
How about a kid in a Stamp Shop?
Mike
Can it be a stamp shop that sells candy too?
Mine is QA - I'll try to scan it later for you guys.
Kelly
I can add GF
Kelly and Michael,
Thank you for your "QA" and "GF" respectively. Our Penny Page is filling in nicely.
You can see how the Penny Page is doing by clicking here.
Regards ... Tim.
Hey! Gang! I haven't been feeling well for a couple of months, now but I have to get off my assets and do something. 1st thing I'm gonna do is tell you about my penny black. It may not be my most valuable but it is the most memorable. It was the 1st prize at the
2000 yearly stamp show in Orlando. Couldn't believe it when they called my name. I never win anything. Anyway my penny black is RG. can't figure out how to put that on the board there.
Welcome back!
Just post a picture of your #1 here, and Tim will do the rest.
Thanks Carl, I have added your RG to the Penny Page.
Regards ... Tim.
Here is an RF to add to the sheet.
Mike
Doesn't the Queen look like she is made up with Indian war paint??
Mike
or looks like one of the peoples from a land the Brits colonized, the NZ Maori.
Mike - Great comment on the cancellation! LOL How true is that - now you'll have me looking at all mine to see what great facial decorations have been placed on the queen (or king)'s head! LOL
Kelly
I would like to welcome Jean-Pierre(woody68) to Stamporama. Jean-Pierre has add his CF to our Penny Page.
Regards ... Tim.
Yes I have an NJ. By varifying I also learned that I need to get a different camera to take the picture. I had a 3.5'" drive on my other computer. My old Mavica still want cut the mustard anymore. I took some photos of my NJ yesterday with another camera.
Later
I do have the following Blacks
BG CA CG CI DA DK EE IB IE IH KF MI MJ NJ NK PF QD QE QF RC RH(2)TB
Paul
I have "O K" and "D C" - I'll post a scan later.
Bobby
Stamporama members:
I would like to restate my appreciation, and vigorously so, to Mr. Tim Auld
for inaugurating Stamporama's "penny black" page. As a lucky possessor
of this stamp, I now enjoy the good fortune of viewing the examples of
other members and sharing in their pleasure.
Although a number of noteworthy postage stamps exist,
the "penny black" stands supreme, and is known and recognized beyond
the world of philately. An historic treasure, long may she reign.
Well done, Tim Auld.
John Derry
I have this Penny Black with letters KF if you want to add it to the penny black page.
That's one sweet looking Penny Black *whistling*
Kelly
It's hard to tell what letter pairs have been represented but here is one of my PBs, on cover, a TJ.
Cheers,
Peter
Cocollectibles and Mdroth,
Thank you both for your addition to the Penny Black page.
Bobby,
I have to apologize to you, I just noticed that I had missed adding your PB's to the Penny Black Page. Your OK and your DC are now added.
Mesapp1,
We already had an NJ, but I have add your username to the mouse over. Again, I apologize for not doing this earlier.
So to the rest of our new friends from BS or VSC or anywhere else, if you have a Penny Black, let us know about it and I will add it to the Penny Black Page.
Regards to all ... Tim.
I was just looking at the Penny Black Page and started thinking if it would be possible to predict which plate positions would most likely be found used and which would most likely be found MNH.
I am going off the assumption (I know about assuming) that most MNH Penny Blacks are "accidental" leftovers that were put away never used by the public to mail an item.
If I were a person living in Victorian England in the 1840s and purchased a sheet of Penny Blacks here is how I would probably use them. Being right handed, I would use my scissors and start cutting at the top right. Position AL would be used first. The next stamp I would use would be AK, etc. Essentialy going right to left, top to bottom. Once I got down to the last 3 stamps, it would be a toss up between TA, TB or TC. So, according to my scenario AL would be the most commonly used/less likely MNH Penny Black and TA/TB/TC would most likey be MNH and least likely used.
I may start taking a survey of all MNH Penny Blacks I see in auction catalogs and see if there is some sort of pattern.
What do you all think?
"So all you have to figure out next is what % of 1840 Victorian Englanders were left handed!!"
Bob:
This is a remarkable example of off-the-wall thinking that I would have sworn was way beyond you. It is the type of fantasy escape-ism in which I wish I would indulge had I the wits.
I am left-handed - the artistic, creative guy that everybody wants to hug. I attended a Catholic elementary school until the fourth grade and was encouraged to use my right hand. (The nuns were strong practitioners of their religion and abhorred force, violence or physical punishment.) My Orthodox-Catholic maternal grandmother believed that the Devil sat on the left side of God, and that I was doomed to a fate of hellfire and brimstone. So far, she's nailed it.
Back on topic: believe that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his deerstalker-capped creation preempted your flight of imagination with: "Sherlock Holmes and the Curious Case of the Dog which wouldn't bark at the Letter-Carrier delivering the Letter with the cancelled Penny Black, position Tango Charlie."
Chase your dream, Bob, I'm with you all the way.
John Derry
John, I always knew that you were sinister. (I'm resisting using an emoticon).
Bob
Sorry, Bob's already got a claim on my RH position!
I just checked my two other PBs, ED and SJ; I was looking for the page where the sheet is represented and finally found it here:
http://stamporama.com/discboard/disc_penny_page.php
Maybe it was posted earlier and I missed it, but here it is. I see there is an ED listed, but no SJ yet; I'll post the SJ image when I can get to my scanner again.
Cheers,
Peter
(Modified by Moderator on 2013-05-05 11:38:33)
Thanks Peter, I have updated the Penny Page showing you have both stamps. Doug, I'm sure Bob won't mind sharing bragging rights on the RH.
Regards ... Tim.
The more the merrier!
Bob
Forgot to add my nice four margin PB! The letters are GC.
Cheers,
Peter
I won the bidStart Penny Black giveaway in April and it finally arrived today, so add OL to the list please.
Cheers,
Peter
"(The nuns were strong practitioners of their religion and abhorred force, violence or physical punishment.) "
Up to the eighth grade ( 1953 ) at three different parochial schools on Long Island a ruler across the open hand was a frequent punishment and being paddled at the principle's office occasionally occurred for serious offenses.
In High School,(1954-'57), I do not recall anyone receiving corporal punishment, but I'll admit that they were Dominicans and I do not recall the order of the elementary school nuns.
Our youngest daughter, the baby girl, a natural blond who will turn 50 next month, was told that left-handed people were more intelligent than right handers, so she has been trying for at least 45 years to switch from being a righty. (I have no idea who would have told that sweet young girl something like that, except maybe a devious left-handed father). We still laugh when we see her attempting to be a lefty.
Mike
I'm left handed, so I can confirm that!
Confirm that you are a devious father ???
I'm a leftie and I'm a genius
Thanks Peter (cocollectibles) for your OL. I'm sorry it has taken me a few days to get it posted on the Penny Page.
Regards ... Tim.
I have one on the way from Jersey (the island). Hopefully it'll be one we need for the list. I'll let you know when it arrives.
update on my penny black. the fire burnt my Gb album and on the left side.
1st one to go was ,of course #1, the penny black, stamp to ashes and ashes to dust. Anyway, it's gone. the RG position. I think, I sent Tim a message about this and unless someone else has an RG , I guess we don't have one. However, I bought a box of album pages and glassines at Michael Roger's auction in April and in the bottom of the box was a damaged penny black on a stock card. The position is KL. sorry, I can't seem to get a good pic of it especially with new printer, that picasa thing is too much for me.
A couple of additions to our Penny Page. Carl has added a KL. Thanks very much for that Karl. Also, one of our members has come up with 50+ penny blacks which I have added to the Penny Page. We are starting to fill it in very well.
Click here for the Penny Page.
Regards ... Tim.
love that casual "50 PBs"
Who the heck garnered 50 of them?
It's beginning to look like a game of Minesweeper!
I haven't thought of that game in a long time!
I hope that the PB I'm waiting for adds some more color to the board!
Let's play PB Sweeper.
I love it Ted.
I got my PB from Stanley Gibbons today. The cancel is over the left letter, but it looks like IG to me, which will add a new one to our game board.
Congratulations Michael; nice four margins too. I noticed you posted the entire presentation folder on the other site, with a COA by one of their moderators from SG. Not sure about that pedigree but nonetheless a PB is a PB and nice to have.
Cheers,
Peter
Thanks. I was surprised seeing those margins. It is a very nice presentation of the stamp, and the frame is very heavy duty and large too. They did a nice job putting it together.
Thanks Michael. Congrats on the PB. i have added it to the Page.
Regards ... Tim.
Phew! Didn't hit a mine....
"Phew! Didn't hit a mine...."
Looks like we're about half-way to getting a complete sheet of the Penny Black amongst the SOR members.
I thought I'd bump this up for the newer members to see if they had any Penny Blacks that they could add to the sheet!
i have a B F but the graph has one of those already !
Here is one that I can help with, RC
Very nice margins!!
My contribution to the Penny Black Plate Page...
Regards,
Len
Jack, where have you been hiding the RC Black ? That happens to be the only one I'm missing with my initials, I have the Red & 2d Blue with RC but no Black. Let me know if you ever put it up for sale
My one and only is OL. As they're not my initials maybe I could change my name?
And we can start calling you Ollie !
As in "Another nice mess you've gotten me into, Ollie !"
"And we can start calling you Ollie !
As in "Another nice mess you've gotten me into, Ollie !"
Great idea to try & re-construct a full sheet. Here is what I have
NC , LD , HH , HI - HJ
I also have an LC but can't find any scan of it.
Nice pair! (that didn't sound right...)
I just realized that I was way behind in updating the Penny Page with new offerings from our members. Thanks philb, irishjack, LenTurner, TheStampCellar and Marius. I have updated the Penny Page with your stamps. Where we have more than one member owning an example of the same stamp (ie. BF) I have added the second member's username so that both are recognized as you mouse over the sheet position.
Keep them coming. Our Penny Page is filling up.
Regards ... Tim.
Doug -
It might be possible to read the lower left corner by enhancing the scan in a photo program - I have photoshop and a few other photo editors, can't hurt to try - solve that curious feeling you have not knowing what that final letter is that solves the puzzle
Kelly
Kelly
That would be nice if I knew what the final letter was, but I do not have photoshop.
I scanned the stamp at the highest resolution on my scanner and I could not read the letter under the cancel.
Doug
Doug -
If you want to send the scan to me via email, I'll play around with it and see if I can figure it out for you if you want.
Kelly
Doug, send it to me too and I can try the microscope I just bought; I know it will be of the scan and not the actual stamp but it can't hurt to try. (unless you want to send me the stamp ... !)
Cheers,
Peter
LOL Peter - not fair - if he's sending the stamp, I get first dibs!!!!
I have my regular microscope, if anything can pick it up, that can!!
Hi Doug. I got the scans. The best I can make out is the letter "S" but it was more difficult to use the microscope effectively on an image on the monitor.
Peter
I too thought it was an S, however, I actually think it is the letter D. When I looked at more closely, the vertical line of the letter on the right side is solid. Also if you look at the bottom left side of the letter, the vertical line is also solid. The curves we see at the end of the bottom left which would make us first think of an S is the same as those found in those which are actually D's (looking back to the images provided below by other members with a clear D). There is no curve at the upper right side, as would be expected from the letter S, but rather it appears to be part of the cancellation as the black mark extends to the one part of the box and is actually higher than the letter itself. The bottom right corner curves like the D, rather than the S.
Obviously my red outline is not completely accurate but it gives a view of how I came to the conclusion that it was a "D".
I used Photoshop, Paint.NET and PhotoPlus going through various methods of amplification, embossing, levels, exposures, and finally settling with relief which pulls the background forward (hard to do with a black on black image).
Kelly
Got this Space Filler in a collection i just bought. We need it for our sheet. OA
Bob
Here's the penny black page in case anyone is looking for it.
http://stamporama.com/discboard/disc_penny_page.php
I can add a new one, OH on cover. I also recently acquired GL, RH, and BJ stamps but they're already represented.
Peter
Nice, Peter! (he said while turning shades of green)
Thanks Bobby. The Penny Black was first issued May 1840; this is the earliest cover I have, with a date stamp on the back of February 1841. I'm hoping to get as close to the initial issue date as I can.
very cool… i will check my two out and see if we can add 1 or 2..
A new SOR member now owns my OA Stamp.
Bob
Tim,
I Have AL & MH.
Nice seeing you at the library today. I found my password.
Pat
Thanks Pat, Peter, Bob and Rich,
I have updated the Penny Page with your Pennies. We really are filling in the page quite well.
Regards ... Tim.
Just checked, mine is a GF which we already have. Drat! REALLY cool project though! FUN STUFF!!
One of our members (BeeSee) just forwarded his KG Penny Black to for addition to the Penny Black Page. Thanks Brian. I have added it to the page.
Regards ... Tim.
Ps See the Penny Black Page
Thanks - I missed this thread or would have posted it myself
Tim,
You can cross JD off the list.
Thanks Steven, I have your "JD" posted on the Penny Black Page. The page is filling up nicely.
Tim.
Updated awhile back but I don't see it in the sheet.
I have an "AK"
AK(ing)
Thanks Andrew, I'll take care of that.
Tim
Your Penny is on the Page Andrew.
Regards ... Tim.
Tim,
My penny black has letters C-B. I have enjoyed watching your challenge grow, just like building a good stamp collection, one stamp at a time. Thanks for the work involved in keeping this project going.
Linus
Looks like I hit a mine Just received my penny black with D A. As soon as I can get my scanner to work, will post a scan.
Mel
I'm sorry everyone, I have got behind in my Penny Black posting. I would very much like to thank the following members for their Penny Black Contributions.
Stampbooster - LA
Linus - CB
mbo1142 - DA
If you go and run your mouse over your position on the Penny Black Page, your username will popup.
For our recent members who haven't caught up with the Penny Black Page, we are building a whole sheet of Penny Blacks with stamps that we own between us. You have to actually own the stamp to be able to post it on the page. It is fine to submit duplicates, your username will appear along side the member who's PB was posted first.
So keep them coming in everyone.
Regards ... Tim.
The Penny Page
I guess if we sell one we have to let you know so you can take it down?
Hi Michael,
I wouldn't take it that far. I'd say once on the page we keep it on the page.
Regards ... Tim
What happens on SOR stays on SOR, well as relates to Penny Blacks that is!
Allowing for artistic license, you have general gist of it.
Recent acquisition: another GL, but on a May 1840 cover:
This one could also morph into the earlier discussion of penciled notes on covers. Not a fan!, but I won't be erasing this one.
Roy
Very nice, Roy!
Pulled a stockbook off the shelf that I haven't opened in a while and, lo and behold, found two new previously "unclaimed" positions. Yeah!
Roy
And look at those boardwalk margins on the right stamp!
Two new acquisitions. Unfortunately, both positions already claimed in the Penny Black Page AK, EB:
Roy
Morning all - I have just joined.
I have a Penny Black with my initials - NB - have others done that?
I am trying to get all of the Victoria NBs but have been three short for quite some time.
Cheers, Nick
Hi Nick,
Yes, I've got a Penny Black with my initials "TA". Thanks for contributing your NB to the Penny Page. I'll add it this weekend.
Regards ... Tim.
Hi Tim I just acquired K K in a nice black presentation folder with info and letter of authenticity Cheryl
Four new acquisitions today, two positions of which have not been claimed!
Roy
Thanks Cheryl, Nick and Roy. I have published your new Penny Blacks on the Penny Page.
Tim.
I now have a DK to add to the sheet. Have been waiting a long time for a penny black
Brian
Well done Brian, and very nice clear borders too. I'll add it to the Penny Page.
Regards ... Tim.
bhsxvet,
Your "DK" is on the page.
Tim.
My DL for the Penny Black page.
JF from my collection. Not very intense, a smudgy cancel and barely a four margin, but should help us along!
Cheers,
Don
This one has a nice Re-Entry.
Thank you 1pieceatatime, donhearl and Charlie2009, I've added your Penny Blacks to the page.
For people who have joined us recently, we are collectively building a full sheet of Penny Black stamps. Search through your collection and post your Penny Blacks here on this thread and I'll post them on the Penny Page.

Here is my latest addition to the Penny Page.
We nearly have the whole "I" row complete. Does anyone have an "IB" or an "IC" hidden away somewhere?

Thank you Tedlin for adding your NA to the Penny Page.

Here is a little bit of fun. The Penny Blacks, as I'm sure that most of you know, were printed in sheets of 240 stamps; 12 across and 20 down. Each stamp was uniquely labelled with it's position on the sheet by placing the column (A to L) and the row (A to T) in the left and Right bottom corners respectively. My Penny Black is labelled "J" "C" as you can see below.
Here is my challenge. Let's see if we can compile a full sheet of Penny Blacks between us. Just post on this thread which one/s you have. I'll create a special page with a table showing the sheet labelled "AA", "AB", "AC" etc and when you tell me which ones you have I'll mark them off in the table by changing their color.
What do you think?
Tim.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Tim,
Interesting idea!

I've read about and looked at Penny Blacks and Two Penny Blues....I want them!!!! Is there any way to get them for less than $250-$300? I've tried the sources that I know and they are all out of my price range. Should I just keep saving up for them?
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Lisa,
Not long ago I read in a Stanley Gibbons newsletter that Chinese collectors were going nuts over Penny Blacks, and paying big bucks for them. There are a few "Buy it now" offers on eBay for a hundred dollars or thereabouts, but most are a lot more. Good luck!
Bob
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
@Lisa
You can buy a decent looking, fault free Penny Black in the $100-$150 range. It will typically be 3 clear margins and close on the 4th side. A pretty copy with 4 full margins will start around $200. A 3 margin copy, slightly cut into on the 4th side will typically be available for about $75.

re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?

Regards ... Tim.

I have taken the images of the Penny Blacks posted in this thread and placed them in the proper position on a pdf page. re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
I have seen several Penny Blacks on EBay that have red cancels like the ones Roy has shown. They look a lot like red just smeared on the stamp. Can anyone educate me about what the red is, where it came from and when?
Thank you in advance!!

Roy
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Lisa,
When the Penny Black was first issued the British PO used black ink to cancel the stamps. But the black ink on black stamps made it hard to see the cancel. They then switched to the red ink so it could be seen better. Then they decided to ditch the black stamp altogether and switched to red stamps using the same plates as the Penny Black.

I was just sorting through a box of Great Britain event covers and came across this:
The "cinderella" Penny Black is actually affixed to the cover, not printed.
Kinda neat!
Roy
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
It was either at Interphil'76 or CAPEX '78 that the British Post Office used large paper bags that had an entire sheet of the GB #1 printed on both sides for sales. Was a neat bag. I kept it for a number of years. Would be nice if I still had it though.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Tim,
I suspect that some members checked their letters against what is on the chart and if theirs were already reported decided not to mention the duplication.
I know i checked and was glad mine were different. I am not sure I would have mentioned them were they already reorted.

i was surprised to see that i actually have a "PA" in my set, but its in pretty sad shape..... if i had another, this one would get tossed! it's so bad, i dont dare scan it for having my non-existent stamp collecting license revoked
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Thanks Mark, I added your PA to the Penny Page. We are filling the sheet in stamp by stamp.
Regards ... Tim.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Mark, while I am an avid proponent of tossing damaged stamps that are worthless (cat less than $1), I would not toss a GB #1, no matter what its condition. There are plenty of people who want/need the stamp in their collection, and will trade or buy it from you.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
I just received this Penny Black from a purchase on ebay. It has an interesting brown cancel. It was listed as SG#2. As I don't have an SG catalog and so I don't understand why it would be number 2 rather than number 1. Can someone help me with this?
Regards ... Tim.
PS. I added this to the Penny Page.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Tim, here's the difference between Scott and SG on the 1840 issues:
Scott #1 = SG #1 through 3
Scott #2 = SG #4 through 6
SG #2 is for the black color variety (Scott #1a). SG #1 s for intense black (Scott #1), and #3 for gray-black (worn plate)(Scott #1b)
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Hi Michael,
Thank you very much for the info. My Scott 2007 cat doesn't differentiate the 1a and 1b from the 1. Could you possibly give me the cat value for the 1a?

Happy Birthday to the Penny Black!!! 172 Years old Today...
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Tim, Scott lists the 1a and 1b in the Classic Specialized Catalog. My catalog is from 2009. The 1a is $9,250 unused and $400 used. Maybe someone with a newer Classic Catalog can update the values.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Per Scott Classic 2011:
Mint Used
1 1p black 7,500 325
1a 1p intense black 16,000 475
1b 1p gray black 15,000 450
1c Inverted Watermark 36,500 2,250
1d Blued paper, from 67,500 650

Hey! Gang! I haven't been feeling well for a couple of months, now but I have to get off my assets and do something. 1st thing I'm gonna do is tell you about my penny black. It may not be my most valuable but it is the most memorable. It was the 1st prize at the

Thank you both for your addition to the Penny Black page.

So to the rest of our new friends from BS or VSC or anywhere else, if you have a Penny Black, let us know about it and I will add it to the Penny Black Page.
Regards to all ... Tim.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
What do you all think?
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
"So all you have to figure out next is what % of 1840 Victorian Englanders were left handed!!"
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Chase your dream, Bob, I'm with you all the way.

re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Up to the eighth grade ( 1953 ) at three different parochial schools on Long Island a ruler across the open hand was a frequent punishment and being paddled at the principle's office occasionally occurred for serious offenses.
In High School,(1954-'57), I do not recall anyone receiving corporal punishment, but I'll admit that they were Dominicans and I do not recall the order of the elementary school nuns.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Our youngest daughter, the baby girl, a natural blond who will turn 50 next month, was told that left-handed people were more intelligent than right handers, so she has been trying for at least 45 years to switch from being a righty. (I have no idea who would have told that sweet young girl something like that, except maybe a devious left-handed father). We still laugh when we see her attempting to be a lefty.

update on my penny black. the fire burnt my Gb album and on the left side.
The position is KL. sorry, I can't seem to get a good pic of it especially with new printer, that picasa thing is too much for me.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
A couple of additions to our Penny Page. Carl has added a KL. Thanks very much for that Karl. Also, one of our members has come up with 50+ penny blacks which I have added to the Penny Page. We are starting to fill it in very well.

re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
I just realized that I was way behind in updating the Penny Page with new offerings from our members. Thanks philb, irishjack, LenTurner, TheStampCellar and Marius. I have updated the Penny Page with your stamps. Where we have more than one member owning an example of the same stamp (ie. BF) I have added the second member's username so that both are recognized as you mouse over the sheet position.
Keep them coming. Our Penny Page is filling up.
Regards ... Tim.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Doug -
It might be possible to read the lower left corner by enhancing the scan in a photo program - I have photoshop and a few other photo editors, can't hurt to try - solve that curious feeling you have not knowing what that final letter is that solves the puzzle
Kelly
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Kelly
That would be nice if I knew what the final letter was, but I do not have photoshop.
I scanned the stamp at the highest resolution on my scanner and I could not read the letter under the cancel.
Doug
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Doug -
If you want to send the scan to me via email, I'll play around with it and see if I can figure it out for you if you want.
Kelly
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Doug, send it to me too and I can try the microscope I just bought; I know it will be of the scan and not the actual stamp but it can't hurt to try. (unless you want to send me the stamp ... !)
Cheers,
Peter
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
LOL Peter - not fair - if he's sending the stamp, I get first dibs!!!!
I have my regular microscope, if anything can pick it up, that can!!
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Hi Doug. I got the scans. The best I can make out is the letter "S" but it was more difficult to use the microscope effectively on an image on the monitor.
Peter
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?

Nice, Peter! (he said while turning shades of green)
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Thanks Bobby. The Penny Black was first issued May 1840; this is the earliest cover I have, with a date stamp on the back of February 1841. I'm hoping to get as close to the initial issue date as I can.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?

re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Tim,
My penny black has letters C-B. I have enjoyed watching your challenge grow, just like building a good stamp collection, one stamp at a time. Thanks for the work involved in keeping this project going.

re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
I'm sorry everyone, I have got behind in my Penny Black posting. I would very much like to thank the following members for their Penny Black Contributions.

Regards ... Tim.

re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
I guess if we sell one we have to let you know so you can take it down?
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Hi Michael,
I wouldn't take it that far. I'd say once on the page we keep it on the page.

re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
What happens on SOR stays on SOR, well as relates to Penny Blacks that is!
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Allowing for artistic license, you have general gist of it.
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Recent acquisition: another GL, but on a May 1840 cover:
This one could also morph into the earlier discussion of penciled notes on covers. Not a fan!, but I won't be erasing this one.

Very nice, Roy!
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Pulled a stockbook off the shelf that I haven't opened in a while and, lo and behold, found two new previously "unclaimed" positions. Yeah!
Roy
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
And look at those boardwalk margins on the right stamp!
re: Do we have a sheet of Penny Blacks between us?
Two new acquisitions. Unfortunately, both positions already claimed in the Penny Black Page AK, EB:
