re: Collecting?

Prescriptions. My collateral collections include side effects of prescriptions. Years, too. I'm working on getting my 72nd year in January. Rolling Eyes

OK, serious answer: My newest collecting interest is stamps, covers, and postcards related to the Algerian War (1954-1962), which resonates strongly with my collection relating to the 1st Indochina War, between France and the Viet Minh, which essentially began in 1945 and ended in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu.

I continue to buy material related to other collections: In recent weeks I've obtained stamps and/or covers related the Battle of the Atlantic, the Korean War, the American occupation of the Philippines, the Vietnam War, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan of the Second World War, and the experience of Jamaican soldiers in the First World War. Almost forgot: aircraft on stamps, and astronomy.

At VANPEX 2014 on the weekend, I bought a set of Occupied Luxembourg stamps on piece, with an interesting Tag der Briefmarke cancellation dated January 12, 1944.

The same cancellation was applied to stamps in Germany. The dealer told me that he hadn't been able to find a listing or any other information about the cancellation, which seems odd.

re: Collecting?

Hi Bob,

The cancel is well documented. It is listed in the standard catalog for German event/slogan cancels, the "Bochmann"-catalog series, as #1 for Luxemburg and also cross-referenced in the Bochmann listing of hand event cancels (#53). This exact cancel showing a U-boat and swastika in a cogwheel was used in a total of eighteen cities. Here is the same cancel from Ulm:

However, this is only one of ten cancel designs for the Tag der Briefmarke (stamp day) 1941. Here are a few more:

The "Weimar" design was used in 52 towns; the other nine designs all run in between about 15 to 20 towns each. Many cities used more than one. Berlin, for instance, used all ten different. Luxembourg used two, the second one being one in the "Gmunden" parachutes-design. Usage of these special cancels was between January 10 and 14, 1941. Try to collect them all, and you don't have to collect much else.

re: Collecting?

I'm collecting Western Europe during WWII and the US from 1929 to 1946. And, I'm also interested in collecting some of the Pacific Islands and Australia during that time period which were under the control of Japan. I'm sure I'll expand to other periods and topics as I continue to figure out exactly what other areas I might be interested in.

re: Collecting?

I have got a lot of country collections, but right now I try to focus on Peru, Egypt and South West Africa. Also trying - courtesy of the approval books - to get up to date with modern Great Britain.
