Have you searched for any stamp clubs in your area? Stamp Club people love new collectors and will be more than willing to help you out. When i started out i preferred to spend on stamps more than catalogs...i would buy perhaps one scott catalog a year...usually the one with countries G to I ...or i would purchase a two year old set of 6 Scott catalogs countries A to Z for a price i could afford. I do not know if you are in the United States or Canada...if so i would take advantage of the reference section of your local library..chances are they have books on stamps. Stamp collecting is a complex thing..the deeper i get the deeper i get !
One more thing...are you certain you want to collect worldwide?...i have spent thousands filling spaces in scott international albums....but i doubt a dealer would offer me much of anything for them...i still buy stamps to fill spaces in them for my own satisfaction...but i also collect specialized countries..where i feel the money is better spent !

Welcome Makazi,
Your philatelic library will grow as you do. Don't be too quick to jump into any particular direction just yet. As for your question about general vs. specialized volumes:
once you're set into a particular direction (say Norway) then you will find that there are many varieties of a particular stamp- that's where the specialized volume comes into play.
This may seem incredible to you right now, but I know of a collector whose total collection is of a single stamp! There are color shades, perforation differences, flat and rotary printings, grills and re-entries that keep this collector fascinated and happy.
There are other collectors whose collections take up entire rooms! Just take Phil's advice-enjoy to the max!!.
Catalogs can be found both new and used-search around and you'll save yourself many bucks. Sometimes great finds can be had in library sales!

"This may seem incredible to you right now, but I know of a collector whose total collection is of a single stamp! There are color shades, perforation differences, flat and rotary printings, grills and re-entries that keep this collector fascinated and happy."
A friend in Australia sent me this which should do nicely for you...i do not know what it cost..but you should be able to find a copy..probably used for not too much money on an Amazon.com type site !
I would second philb's suggestion to see if there is a local stamp club that you can join. They may have catalogs in their library or be willing to discuss them with you in detail.
There is a list of stamp clubs in Norway at http://filatelist.no/frimerkeklubber-i-norge-5753
One thing to consider when choosing between catalogs is what catalog numbering system the stamp dealers you buy from use. Here in the US, nearly all dealers use only Scott catalog numbers, so it makes sense to use the Scott catalog. In Norway, I would guess that dealers normally the Michel or Stanley Gibbons catalog numbers, except for the other Scandinavian countries, where I would expect them to use Facit.
Then, if there are particular countries that you want more detailed listings, you could get a specialized catalog for them. Examples are the Norgeskatalogen for Norway and the Michel Deutschland-Spezial for Germany.
See Stamps of Australia.
I've bought lots of books from ABE without any problems at all.
Bob
Hi Mac;
I don't know if you can buy from Amazon, all the way over there in Norway, but they have very good prices on used Scott catalogs. They are mostly from libraries as they replace them with newer ones.
I bought all six volumes (the entire world) for about US $96.00 and that even included shipping. Mostly they were 2-3 year old copies, and were in full color! However shipping to Norway would be rather expensive. Amazon also accepts PayPal.
Happy collecting

Thanks for the replies
I'll keep an eye out for that Stamps of Australia catalogue, thanks!

I was checking the eBay market price for complete sets of Scott catalogs, and took a few minutes to produce the following report. Thought it might be useful for those looking for catalog sets. Note that some of the sets are 7 volumes (including US Specialized) and others are 6. These represent actual transactions as reported by eBay, not offers that went unsold. It covers about 2 months from April until July 6, 2014. Most of these were located in the US, a few in Canada (Canadian location seems to go for a bit of a premium) and in most cases do not include shipping, although I noted some "free shipping" offers.
Hope you find it useful.

Hi Mac;
I have used computer discs (CDs) for reference work, and always wish they were paper instead. They were not stamp catalogs!
When using stamp catalogs, one has to frequently flip back and forth between not just two, different pages, but maybe four or five to compare different issues to determine which one yours is. This would be a real pain in the u-know-what and one would get very frustrated quickly.
I have also checked prices on FeeBay and found them to be, on average much higher than Amazon. So I purchased from Amazon instead, however they were not all the same years of issue, but I was only concerned with the cheapest price.
Happy stamp collecting

Thanks for the tip about the websites! I have visited both previously, but feel more comfortable with traditional catalogue for identifying stamps. I do find them very useful for those times I want to double-check anything, and will probably be using them from time to time.
"I have used computer discs (CDs) for reference work, and always wish they were paper instead. They were not stamp catalogs!"
I think there are a couple of things to consider when one chooses a catalogue:
1. The level of detail you need
2. Which languages can you read without (too) much difficulties
3. If you intend to use the catalogue(s) as base for exchanges (wantlists etc.), where are your trading partners and what catalogues do they use
For me, my first choice would be Michel. It is the most used over here in the Netherlands plus it contains much more information and is (at least in my opinion) easier to use than Scott, which tends to be highly illogical and inconsequent at times.
On the other hand, I do a lot of exchanges with people in North America (mostly via Stamporama) and for that Scott is inescapable. It is also a bit more practical because one has a complete world catalogue with 6 volumes whereas a complete set of Michel catalogues consists of at least 20 volumes.
If your trading / exchanging is limited to Scandinavia and perhaps Europe, Scott will probably be of little use because it is not very popular in this part of the world.
Jan-Simon
Good pointers Jan-Simon, thanks!
I've ordered one Michel catalogue, and I think I'll be able to figure out what it says (eventually). I also have a friend who speaks german, so I think I can bug him if I'm stuck
I am not sure where I'll be doing my trading, I imagine that most of my trading will be in Europe and here on StampoRama. But if I can figure out when (date or year) a stamp was printed and provide a picture - is catalogue number really needed?
Another good resource is Amazon, as they list used editions of mostly Scott catalogs, often discarded copies from public libraries. I just received today a 2010 Scott Vol 2 C-F, for $9 plus $4 shipping. Since I don't collect anything more modern, the four year old edition is perfect for me for reference. If I absolutely need a current Scott value I can get that at the library.
For my Australia and Germany collections I picked up the current Stanley Gibbons and the DNK catalog, which has Michel numbers. One of these days I will get the Michel catalog set.
I always check used book stores but rarely find anything, but I did find a copy of George Amick's book on the Jenny Invert for $10 at the Strand in NYC.
Someone mentioned that buying catalogs and literature as addictive - indeed it is!
Cheers,
Geoff
For anyone still following this, there are a number of auctions on eBay now for 2013 Scott catalogs. They seem to be mostly retired library versions, and are going for $14-$23 each with free shipping. I just picked up a set of six 2013 catalogs listed as "very good" condition, for $111. They haven't arrived yet, and I will update this post if they are anything other than what is described. Happy hunting!
Steve
The set of six 2013 Scott Catalogs arrived this week and I am quite pleased with them. They are all ex-library books and range from lightly-used at worst to unused at best. I bought only "Very Good" condition catalogs. If you buy "Good" the price drops even more. And with free shipping, the price you see is the price you pay.
I just checked eBay and as of Oct 24 2014, the seller betterworldbooks still has multiple copies of the 2013 catalogs for sale.
I tried to find "betterworldbooks" on eBay, without success. Could you please provide us with a link?
Bob
Also try the online site called the book depository . They have a lot of books about stamp catalogues and a lot of other books about collecting.
I've bought a couple of books from them so far. Fast shipping, and NO cost for postage no matter where you live. They are shipped from England.
They have thousands of other books too.
Let's see if this works:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271603071291?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
And here's a link to all of their listings, of which there appear to be more than 1 million!
http://www.ebay.com/sch/betterworldbooks/m.html?item=271603071291&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562
From there I suggest a search to narrow things down...
Steve
Note that this was the first time I bought anything from betterworldbooks. I wouldn't hesitate to do so again, but I am certainly not saying they are the only, or even the best deal out there!
I have so far only used a Norwegian catalogue for identifying stamps (only sorted norwegian stamps so far too), but considering getting a few catalogues so I can start on the foreign stamps (everything but Norwegian ).
I am slightly confused about what type of catalogues to get though. I see some are region based (west-europe, east-europe, etc.). The region based catalogue contains for example Norway. What is the difference on a Norway only catalogue and a region-based catalogue containing Norway? Will the region based one not contain all the Norwegian stamps? Or is it just the amount of details?
I've also seen, for example, a German catalogue and then the same company has a Specialized German catalogue. What is the difference in a "normal" country catalogue and a specialized one?
Catalogues are kinda expensive, so don't want to buy something that I don't really want or need. Any advice on catalogue is appreciated. At the moment I guess I will be collecting world-wide. Would a region-based catalogue be sufficient to identify all stamps?

"I have used computer discs (CDs) for reference work, and always wish they were paper instead. They were not stamp catalogs!"
re: Types of catalogues? What to get?
If your trading / exchanging is limited to Scandinavia and perhaps Europe, Scott will probably be of little use because it is not very popular in this part of the world.

re: Types of catalogues? What to get?
Good pointers Jan-Simon, thanks!
I've ordered one Michel catalogue, and I think I'll be able to figure out what it says (eventually). I also have a friend who speaks german, so I think I can bug him if I'm stuck
I am not sure where I'll be doing my trading, I imagine that most of my trading will be in Europe and here on StampoRama. But if I can figure out when (date or year) a stamp was printed and provide a picture - is catalogue number really needed?
re: Types of catalogues? What to get?
Cheers,
Geoff
re: Types of catalogues? What to get?
For anyone still following this, there are a number of auctions on eBay now for 2013 Scott catalogs. They seem to be mostly retired library versions, and are going for $14-$23 each with free shipping. I just picked up a set of six 2013 catalogs listed as "very good" condition, for $111. They haven't arrived yet, and I will update this post if they are anything other than what is described. Happy hunting!

re: Types of catalogues? What to get?
The set of six 2013 Scott Catalogs arrived this week and I am quite pleased with them. They are all ex-library books and range from lightly-used at worst to unused at best. I bought only "Very Good" condition catalogs. If you buy "Good" the price drops even more. And with free shipping, the price you see is the price you pay.
I just checked eBay and as of Oct 24 2014, the seller betterworldbooks still has multiple copies of the 2013 catalogs for sale.
re: Types of catalogues? What to get?
I tried to find "betterworldbooks" on eBay, without success. Could you please provide us with a link?

re: Types of catalogues? What to get?
Also try the online site called the book depository . They have a lot of books about stamp catalogues and a lot of other books about collecting.
I've bought a couple of books from them so far. Fast shipping, and NO cost for postage no matter where you live. They are shipped from England.
They have thousands of other books too.
re: Types of catalogues? What to get?
Let's see if this works:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271603071291?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
And here's a link to all of their listings, of which there appear to be more than 1 million!
http://www.ebay.com/sch/betterworldbooks/m.html?item=271603071291&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562
From there I suggest a search to narrow things down...

Note that this was the first time I bought anything from betterworldbooks. I wouldn't hesitate to do so again, but I am certainly not saying they are the only, or even the best deal out there!
