John - If you are asking the Auctioneer, a now-and-then seller on Stamporama's auction board, to recuse himself from your request and refer it to the remainder of the Volunteer
Committee solely because of the fact that he is a now-and-then seller on Stamporama's auction, then the remaining members of the Volunteer Committee should also recuse themselves as most(if not all)are now-and-then sellers.
Respectfully,
Liz Jones
John,
Did you mean for your request to sound as harsh as it came across? If I didn't know you better I'd think that you were questioning David's ability to be impartial. Did you mean to imply that?
Dan C.
I don't think anybody was thinking anything specifically when setting criteria for the "Hot" flag. Dan with likely the best institutional memory can weigh in if the auctioneer or the VC had even anything to do with setting these criteria. It is just benign playfulness. I don't think anybody is getting hurt by it. However, I also do not think that the Hot-flag adds any value -- neither in its current nor in any revised form. The number of bids is obvious to those interested. If your bidding behavior is influenced by the number of bids on any one item, by all means, you can sort auction items by this criterion. Generally, I am on John's side preferring less clutter and redundancy. If more than just one individual believes there is no value to it, I am sure Tim could eliminate it.
Arno
Geez...how about those Mets???
As a seller, I'm all for hype.....
Nothing i like better than one of John's whimsical tirades linking Slim Whitman and myself in the same thread and the plea to recuse myself, which i not only note but welcome so that I might comment as amused bystander rather than a guy who is expected to actually address the issue
David the reclusive recused

where's the moderator when you need him to rein in these meandering comments, although, come to think of it, while I remind myself of Slim, John's resemblance to Mr Poindexter is more than just coincidental, don't you think.
Slim
People having misunderstandings and short fuses. You would think it was Lent or something.
I think it is unfortunate that John's request is now on the brink of being lost underneath a blanket of jokes. As a matter of fact, I fully agree with John and think that his proposal to change the moment when an auction becomes "hot" is a good one.
Jan-Simon
Jan-Simon is correct and I apologize for being flippant in my posted response. John made a legitimate and appropriate post and, despite the fun we are having here, he deserves to have his proposal taken seriously. Personally, I am ambivalent about having icons of any sort attached to auction titles. Such notations do not irritate me or influence my viewing or bidding on any conscious level, nor does it please or displease me when attached to my own auction items.
I believe the VC is a good cross representation of our membership, and whether to continue or discontinue the use of the "hot" icon should be determined by the VC.
But if this is not settled sooner rather than later, I cannot promise that I will not yield to my baser instincts and post something inane, off-topic and (at least in my own befuddled and chaotic mind) humorous.
"...where's the moderator when you need him to rein in these meandering comments..."
Cool! Man! actually, I kind of agree with the curmudgeon.
Well, then let me suggest to take this discussion offline and discuss within the VC.
Arno
Bobby,
I clearly have abandoned you for far too long! My apologies!! please check your email.
My vision is still 20/50 to 20/80 corrected but I will do my best to become more active when I'm able to see well, by which I mean 20/50 in both eyes.
Lisa
I think the way it is working now is just fine. How often do we get 5 people bidding on one auction here? If we went to that criteria nothing would ever be hot. I have enough self control to not go into a frenzy just because I see something is "hot". It may attract me to look at the auction and anything that brings bidders in is good with me. I appreciate the hell out of free auctions and approvals . I applaud the excellent work done here. Thank You!
Has anyone considered the possibility that the "Hot" icon could actually scare off potential bidders who do not want to get into a bidding war/frenzy over an item? Just a thought.
It doesn't matter to me if it stays or goes, but I wouldn't mourn its disappearance.
I believe the threshold is 7 bids before it becomes "Hot". I like it. When I see the the "Hot" icon, it makes me check the item out because it might be a better item.
Bob
For what it is worth - just now if I click the Show categories link it says 4963 total auction lots. If I click the Hot Items link it shows me there are 6 hot items right now. I've always thought the Hot items was a neat feature, but it is not something I normally look at. Plus if my memory is correct the SOR auction has always had this feature, even the old auction software.

The VC has discussed possible changes to the "Hot item"-flag in our auction and decided to leave it as is.
Arno
Personally I feel that the "HOT" item tag doesn't mean much, but if you are a seller you surely get a big smile on your face when you see that at least one of your items was a big hit with the buyers.
Mike
Well some like it ........ "Hot".
I might have to buy that album...and maybe listen to the music.
Why the Danish band used a painting of (what looks like) San Francisco to adorn their cover (except for the obvious reason), I don't know.
Charlie, would you help that lady pick up what she dropped?
Charlie is a man that KNOWS what is HOT and what is NOT!
Lars
I beseech the Chief Auctioneer (for life) to re-examine the existing criteria
which results in auction lots being labelled "hot".
In light of the new economy, which has existed for some years now,
I recommend updating the criteria to make it more difficult for auction lots
to be subjected to this sort of infantile marketing hype;
and which stereotypes auction-lot bidders as intellectually immature,
with status markedly less than that of sellers.
As few as two members (less than 1% of 1% of the membership) bidding
on one auction lot can result in that infuriating "hot" icon popping
up, robbing we bidders of our senses and resulting in irrational bidding
while sellers ecstasize.
May I suggest that at least five separate members must be, or have been,
bidding on an auction lot within a forty-eight hour period before the
label "hot" may be affixed.
Principle of full disclosure: the current "hot" label remind me far too
much of those revolting, hysterical "K-Tel" commercials which led me
to abandon television decades ago; and pardon some of the liberties
I've taken with English vocabulary.
Moreover, and to everyone's annoyance, I ask the Chief Auctioneer,
a now-and-then seller on Stamporama's auction board, to recuse himself
from my request and refer it to the remainder of the Volunteer
Committee whose wisdom and judgement I will accept unequivocally.
John Derry ("hot" under the collar)
