I believe that the numbers from most catalogs are posted on Colnect. https://colnect.com/en/stamps/catalog
The process is quicker if you know the year the stamp was published.

Colnect would be my answer as well. For some reason they seem to have escaped the scorn of Amos Media as far as the use of Scott numbers is concerned.
Interesting site! I've seen it mentioned several times and never checked it out, so thanks for that. I'll play around with it and see if it does what I want it to do.
Colnect uses "Stamp Numbers". The trademark name Scott name is not used anywhere (see as one key factor). If they had an issue, I believe Colnect is not based in US so not as easy legal reach.
I like Colnect because they have a phone app that is pretty good at identifying stamps and you can search for issues by denomination and then pick the matching image. Printed works like Scott are not 100% illustration so Colnect is a lot faster to ID.
That's an interesting point Al. Can Amos/Scott trademark a number in the USA?
Doesn't sound right, but perhaps they could trademark the "system" of numbering.
Anyway, I'm not a lawyer, not even a "Sovereign Citizen", just a Canadian...
The numbering has been subject to a few lawsuits over the years.
Occasionally some sellers will ID their stamps with a catalog other than Scott's. I'm not complaining since they can use whichever catalog they want. I only use Scott's and am curious if there is a site that converts from other catalog numbers to Scott's numbers. I'm not even sure if copyright would allow this site to exist!
