A few more.
Great looking stamps Phil. I especially like the first set you showed. I can see why you like them.
Love those planes passing Rome with the coliseum on their left!
I had never heard of General Balbo's flight. It was a big deal.
Here's a nice little article on Balbo:

I do not collect Italy and that is partly because I chose to concentrate on a limited amount of countries instead of going worldwide and partly because those beautiful Italian classics are too expensive for me. It is a pity, because there are some beauties in that earlier period. But like you, I will probably never be able to get those.
Ernie, thanks... i was at a school "yard sale" a few years ago and a woman had the book "the mass flights of Italo Balbo" on her table. I snapped it right up, its too large to show a scan here but it has a section on the amazing covers that were created.
I also have a collection of the covers and postcards from the Chicago Century of Progress so there is a kind of connection there.
I do like this set of the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Naval Academy
As a group, I particularly like the stamps engraved by Czeslaw Slanias. My principal collecting interests do not include world wide stamps, but even so, a few years ago I started a small side collection of Slanias stamps. Here is an example of his 1000th stamp
Slania is worthy of a separate thread with images of "favorite stamps" by Slania only.
Anybody up for the challenge to start it?
Roy
@Roy... I'll do it!

I have been a worldwide collector since the age of nine. The reason was mainly economic, the man next door had a U.S. collection..but he also had a salary. After long thought i have decided that among my favorite stamps are the stamps of Italy to about 1937. There are high values of certain sets that i will never own...but i can go to my Scott Catalog and look at my wish list anytime. Here are a few of the stamps i do own.
