re: Help with Austria

Very cool looking stamps!!! I have a collection of some of the Russian revenues, the AR coded ones (missing AR6) and I very much like the looks of that series! I collect many US revenues as well as Newfoundland and it's a way to pick up interesting stamps without paying a fortune for many of them. Some are a bit ugly, especially the US wine stamps and dated reds and greens but many are hugely attractive! Check out the one page below. Sorry this is way off topic but I got a bit carried away! Yes, I know the image is sideways again! Sorry!

re: Help with Austria

To Bob -

As you have read, they are Austrian revenues. I have a pretty decent collection of them, mostly pre-1910 or so.

Now, if you can find it, there's a catalog by Martin Erler and Helmut Hagn. My copy is from 1986 and I got it I think from delcampe or eBay. It displays all of the "leaf" issues as well as Franz Josef tall issues.

The ones that are weird are those with the gum applied to the face of the stamp and soaking them will ruin the design. The older leaf and Josef issues are soakable. That is, if you can stomach some of the real nasty "old gluepot" gum they use which doesn't seem to come off, but eventually will dry if you're careful.

Some of the designs on the leaf issues are just fabulous. Serious old time illustrations, like the ones you showed us above. Beware, however, there are many varieties of the leaf types and they printed them so they wouldn't be counterfeited.

Interesting and nice looking bunch of older revenues.

To Harvey:

Did you get a Persian Rug yet? Happy I too like these, even though they were printed in so many different ways, it's hard to keep track of it. Many U.s. Documentary / Proprietary revs are boring, but these are neat to look at.

I also like the Maine battleship beasties. 2 different perfs, plenty of different cancels can be had for little $.
