Hard time with this. No watermark. Blued paper? Obviously, not in great shape. Perfs trimmed?

re: Any New Zealand experts out there?

There are 38 people listed in the member's information who collect New Zealand, including myself. But I am no expert, especially on early material, because I have very little of it as this point. But I think it depends very much on the colour and that is very hard to tell from a scan. If you can determine the exact colour using a good colour guide it would make the job much easier. It really doesn't look to me like the perfs have been trimmed and I'm not sure if it's blued paper or not - you need a better background colour.

Not an expert either. But does not look like trimmed perfs. Definitely does not look like blued paper. So, assuming you are correct about no watermark, I would say SG8.

I could only wish to be an expert on those early Chalons by being able to compare examples, but as of this moment, I have exactly zero of them, so I can't really be of much help here.

re: Any New Zealand experts out there?

On the stamp forum, New Zealand SG8 had 3 printings. The earliest was a Richardson printing, imperf, no watermark. The second printing, by someone else, used the same color (yours is correct) but is perf 12.5 on watermarked paper. The third was also perf 12.5 and watermarked but a totally different color. Now you’ve got to find the other two varieties. LOL
