The stamps on your covers are "First Class" so are a variation of 3038.
3980 is denominated 39 cents.
Whether or not they were also issued on the same day is unknown as Scott does not appear to give dates, there seem to be numerous printings in both formats.

In Scott US Specialized, in the FDC listings, it says:
3973 (39c) self-adhesive booklet stamp - serpentine die
"Although 3973 has an issue date of Dec. 8, it was not known to have been available until January 2006".

Thanks for the additional information Roy, what does it say about the First Class stamp, which is the one on the covers (not the 39c one).
Sorry I do not have a specialised US catalogue.

3973 is one of the variations of the First Class stamp. There are a number of them in different formats. The note applies only to the self-adhesive booklet format (#3973). When Scott puts the denomination in parentheses (39c), it indicates that the denomination does not show on the stamp.
I could not determine from the picture which of the formats are on the FDC, but logic says it is likely #3973.

Thanks Roy, just noticed that I used the image number rather than the catalogue number (3965-75) in my original reply.
Guess someone is going to check the perfs on the fdc's to really be sure which it is. #3973 looks right to me from what I can see on the covers when enlarged.
