If you have not already found this site it may be a good idea to join. Most clubs, like Stamporama, have stamp sales at cheaper than dealer prices. Perhaps buying a small collection could be a good way to start.

Possibly there are more clubs local to your address, try a web search.
Regarding customs duty, I believe that Ebay and other sales sites automatically now charge the appropriate fees including vat. (I could be wrong)
I doubt you should have any problems buying these stamps in the UK.
Officially one should put a customs declaration on all shipments sent abroad, except letters and cards. That's from the EU to the UK, but also the other way around. Personally I do not really see many who do it when I buy stuff from the UK and to be honest, I have never done it when sending stamps to UK based buyers. It is of course a different story when one wants to send a packet, in that case there is no way to avoid customs.
Should you be interested in German Reich, there are many here selling stamps from that period. Are you only interested in Germany proper, or also states and area such as Bavaria, Danzig, Memel etc. etc. etc.?

It's a good question Jansimon. I'm still undecided but as well as German Empire issues I'm interested in WWI overprints, and also the post-war developments in Bayern and Wurtemburg to name just a couple of areas.
WW1 overprints: that would be stuff like "Belgien" or "Russisch Polen" or "Gen.-Gouv. Warschau"?
I do not have many of those, but anything else: if interested send me a PM
Well maybe look around in this section "Germany"

Lots of hits......
I'm looking to start a German collection focussing around the First World War period, possibly moving into Weimar and Third Reich issues. As a new philatelist I have a couple of fundamental questions:
1. I am UK based but a lot of the stamps I'm interested in I'm only seeing as available from overseas sellers. Should I purchase from the EU or US am I also liable to pay customs and import duties too (my budget is small, I'll rarely be buying anything for more than a few pounds)?
2. Are there any UK based dealers specialising in pre-WWII German stamps?
3. Are there any UK based approvals companies with pre-WWII German stamps?
Many thanks for any responses.
