I'll bow to those with better knowledge but I think the former is perf 14 and the latter is rouletted 13.5.
That is correct. It also says the colour is (dunkel)violetultramarin bis schwärzlichblau. In other words, various shades exist.
335 Wa and Wb are both flat plate printing and perforated 14:14 1/2. They are not rouletted. The rouletted version is 335 BP. So my question remains unanswered.
I now see what you mean. I was looking in the standard Michel catalogue and there the difference between W and P is not made. Now that I found it in the specialized catalogue I suppose you need the Michel Farbenführer. There is no way a normal human being can spot the difference between types a and b, in my opinion.
The cat. entry from Michel, English version 2016
Jans,
It's certainly frustrating.
BW - check 319AWa and 319AWb and you'll find the missing color scheme:
My 2015 English translation shows 335AWa and 335AWb with the same colors, but with the underlying stamps 319AWa and 319AWb, which have different colors. My 2019 Deutschland-Spezial shows 335AWa and 335Awb with different colors, and the same as the underlying stamps 319AWa and 319AWb. So, apparently a translation/conversion error between the two catalogs.
Personally I ignore these color shade varieties.... my old eyes aren't good enough to tell those kind of gradients, and assume it's the cheaper one.
I recall at some point seeing a note in Michel that color varieties over a certain catalog value needed to be BPP expertized, but I can't seem to find that reference now. I'd expect that to be the case with this issue given 335AWa is -.30 Euro and 335AWb is 50.- Euro catalog value......
I also was looking at the standard Michel. It appears from the catalogue image that they are actually rotary press printings.
That's correct. They are rotary press printings. Flat Plate was a misstatement. thanks
Jerry,
Thanks for your suggestion. Using the colors of the original, un overprinted stamps solved the problem. Out of my small pile I found one authenticated by InflaBerlin and four others that match it. These are all 335A P a. A block of four mint and a single, also mint are 335Wa. A used single is 335Wb blackish blue.
Thanks to everyone who contributed.
@BWSchulz
You can sort the stamps according to their size:
flat print (P) -17.7 x 21.5 mm
rotary print (W) - 18 x 22 mm
Color "b" is the most valuable for both Mi 335 and Mi 319.
The original name of the colors is (Specialized Michel 2019):
I have a used block of 319 for which I could not identify the color:
It would help me if you could post the 2 stamps with the colors a and b. (scanned/pictured together)
Thank you
Here are the 319 W a & b.
@Gerom, the Block your showing is from a plate print, Mi 319Pa. There is no b color in the plate print. Walzen druck (Rotary press) have no HAN numbers.

Hi Manfred,
Thank you.
Of course I have to change my glasses...the writing in Michel is very small and I thought that plate print (P) also has 2 colors.
Dear G,
Op is correct. I can't add a scan today - my work room is blocked by plumbers and such. Maybe this evening. You might check on ebay for the 2016 Michel Germany Specialized in English. I can read some German. My dad was a translator for the Army of Occupation, but he almost never spoke it in the home. I have both the German language and English language versions of Michel.
I'm almost 80 years old. I use a magnifying glass on almost everything I read. It especially helps with the fine print in Michel catalogs.
Hi @BWSchulz,
I prefer to use Michel in German (the one translated into English has many mistakes and the second reason is the name of the colors and the identification in the Michel Color Guide)
I always forget to look for images with the varieties of colors only in the "stampsx.com" site.
They have very successful images (they look like in reality):

I can't tell the difference. Can you help? This is 10 Billion Marks on 20 Million Marks. My 2015 Michel catalog gives them both the same color. Is one just noticeably darker than the other. HELP!
