It was a genuine local in the 1930's (35-38). But covers are scarce.
The set is beautiful.....to my eyes. I love these simple designs.
Prior to 1938 there was little or no necessity for stamps since mail went to Denmark free of charge. These stamps were issued in 1935-6 for the remote northern settlement in Thule, Greenland, founded by Knud Rasmussen. The series was issued on the 25th anniversary of the founding of the settlement and depicted Knud Rasmussen, the Danish flag, walruses and local scenery. The stamps were valid for mail from Thule to Copenhagen. During the period of use, the stamps were only for mail between the Cape York Base office and Copenhagen. As with other local post stamps, additional franking (in this case, Danish) had to be applied to forward the mail beyond Copenhagen. Michel #T1-T5; Scott #L1-L5. Mint hinged value ranges around US$20.00 for the set of five.
Here they are on a 1979 Denmark Souvenir item in conjunction with the Danish Red Cross. The Thule locals were printed using the original cliches.
I don't have a cover sadly !
There are many of these stamps that were CTO. Postally used are more scarce. This philatelic cover is listed on eBay for US$150:
Looks like this is a First Day Cover.
There was a USCG base in Greenland , Cape Atholl and on Baffin Island, Cape Christian, (About Latitude: 76"N Longitude: 69°W) protecting the AF base at Thule where I was stationed for a year.
IT GOT MY ticket to three years in Hawaii.
Both places are now closed, victims of that non-existent climate change no one can see any proof of.
"victims of that non-existent climate change no one can see any proof of."
Any information will be appreciated as to whether or not this is a "genuine" stamp. I have several and have not been able to classify. Thanks!
