I was checking postmarks for a collection I am starting and came across this Hong Kong stamp with a 62B cancellation.

I have quite a few B62 and thought that was the general Hong Kong cancel.

My question is two parts. Is it common to see a 62B rather than a B62 and does this happen with the other cancels similiar in design to this with the letter and two numbers?

Thanks for any help.
Bob

re: Question for the Hong Kong Experts

The 62B postmark was used in the mainland Treaty Ports. It's a scarce cancel. Unfortunately my Yang catalogue is still in a moving box somewhere, so I can't help further

re: Question for the Hong Kong Experts

The B62 cancel is common, the 62B cancel is uncommon.

From F.W. Webb, Chapter 11, pages 88 and 89, The 62 B Obliterator:

re: Question for the Hong Kong Experts

My pleasure. I am not aware of any other cancels that are reversed like this.

Your example is a nice discovery.

I have found three examples of the 62B, shown below, from my collection...

re: Question for the Hong Kong Experts

In reading the attachments in your post it states that other hammers like the D29 were issued to the treaty ports. Should I assume I need to look for these cancels on Honk Kong only stamps or were British stamps cancelled with these as well?

Thanks

re: Question for the Hong Kong Experts

On Hong Kong stamps only.

From Webb, here is a list. The second column, "Killer Allotted," shows the letter/number cancels to look for on Hong Kong stamps used in the treaty ports.

Hope this helps you,

Linus
