as far as I know older Austrian stamps (before 1918) come in both varnished and unvarnished versions (diagonal stripes) and older Russian stamps also have something like that (varnish lozenges).
The British Post office did issue some stamps with a varnished coating. One example is the 9p Machin definitive from 1976, Stanley Gibbons Specialized U174, which had phosphor bands printed over a varnished coating
U. S. A. issued stamps in 1902 with a varnish square, I suppose (I don't know for sure) to prevent reuse of the stamp.
Did other countries also use varnish on their stamps before 1902 and for what reason?
