A blackprint is a sort of test printing. Back in the old days, blackprints were often sent out to newspapers and other publications to be used as illustrations with the announcement of new issues. Later they became collectable and were just another way for postal services and printing companies to make money, creating them solely for collectors.

Both are from the International stamp exhibition in Essen.

The bottom one is called a black-print. Most black prints will differ slightly from the origanal plate. Black prints printed in engraved-recess printing are from the origanal plate. The year books contain one black print. I believe the first black-print was printed in 1975.

I don´t have a recent Michel special, but these are listed with the initials SD. Unfortunatly my catalog only lists black-prints issued in the year books.
