I have seen various issues with self-adhesives items after aging and this does not just apply to stamps.
the US 10c weather vane discolored terribly
Avery labels (as a descriptor, not necessarily the brand name) often no longer stick when removed from old mint sheets and sometimes from the manila folders to which they had been affixed
modern US SAs seem to be fine, although I have very few in my collection
Yesterday I got a box with a wild mix of materials. Stockbooks, cards and envelopes with a lot of stamps, mostly Netherlands.
There was a mint sheet of self adhesive stamps in this lot and here I saw something that worried me: the glue had completely diffused and made the stamps greasy and almost translucent. Needless to say they were ready for the bin.
Another sheet of self adhesive Christmas stamps had somehow changed as well: the stamps just fell off the sheet. This is something that I noticed before.
For me it was another justification of my choice not to collect mint. In the past mint stamps might stick to the book in case of high humidity, now there is this.
Any idea what causes this and has anyone else seen this as well?
