Hi Bob,
A great place to start is the Perfin Society:
http://www.angelfire.com/pr/perfinsoc/
Their website has a huge amount of useful information.
Membership is very reasonably priced and includes a useful newsletter with lists of new finds and background info on perfin users.
However, one challenge is the sheer number of different British perfins!
The latest figures I have to hand are 24,932 different dies (different patterns of holes) used on 268,704 different combinations of die and face different stamp.
I've tried two methods to display them:
(1) One face down stamp for each die that I have with additional face different stamps shown face up, set out on black Hagner or Prinz sheets.
(2) Face down face-different stamps set out for each die on clear Vario sheets.
In principle, I prefer method (2) but in practice I'm happier with method (1) as the stamps are more likely to stay lined up as I set them out.
Edit: I'll add some scans when I get my new laptop to talk to my scanner!
Maybe this site would be of assistance, especially if you view the exhibits.

EDIT. Heck Nigel beat me to it, I'll have to get up earlier.
PRINZ 70741/T work fine ... allow viewing front or back
To display them, a suggestion would be to find a normal example of the each stamp. The stamps with the perfins are better see from the back. Start a page/line of a stock book/sheets with black pages with the normal stamp, then follow that with the perfins face down.
If you decide to go forward, place a want ad of what you're looking for. I'll bet you'll get a bunch right off the bat.
ALPHA SORT A-Z IN 2X3 ZIPLOCS.... THEN USE STOCKCARDS BY LETTER
That's a good way too. It just depends how you want to do it.
