Considering the exchange rate it is a bargain compared to what we pay for international shipments.
Yes, in comparison it is not that bad. We pay more and for us most of the world is much closer
But I think that this is going to become the norm for UPU international shipping. I have seen shipping costs from sellers in Germany (Euro) going sky high over the past month. Their rates seem to be double and triple what the international shipping costs are from the US.
The little guys and gals like us will be priced out of the market.
From a mail and air cargo perspective, I wonder which they max out first - volume or weight. When shipping by air, this is important. When they price by weight, it would mean weight is key but for packages I bet size is more important than weight. However, it would be more complicated to charge that way.
It's sort of a balancing act on size versus weight. If it weighs too much, then size doesn't matter. If it's too big, then weight doesn't matter. Either way, it isn't getting on the plane.

Hi All
I remember a few years ago when Australia Post introduced a $9.00 dollar surcharge for parcels going to the USA, something to do with screening the parcels for contraband.
I do not know if it is still in place, but I was under the impression that all parcels are screened when leaving the country. They are screened when coming in.
Anyway, it was just a money grab by Australia Post.
The technology for screening has been in place a long time.

I have just cut a piece from AP's new postal rate booklet ,are we getting ripped off or what? What was 50 grams to 250 grams for $9-00 has been split into to weight ranges 50 grams to 125 grams at a cost of $7-50 and up to 250 grams has gone up to $12-00 a 33% increase. You would think half the weight half the price !!! No way.
