I have an album of Russian paintings on stamps to the end of the Soviet era. Fortunately, these stamps come in complete sets, with some miniature sheets, so there is very little left-over material.
But my main topic is World War II, collected judiciously in several sub-divisions, e.g. commemoration, Military Operations, military hardware, Resistance, Holocaust, atrocity and so forth. Over the years I have amassed quite a few duplicates, especially used stamps which I do not want as I collect only mint.
I cannot easily list my unwanted material, as it would come under Gibbons numbers which would not help the majority here (see another current thread). If anyone were to share this interest, or even think about starting a WW2 collection, I think my best option would be to post images of stamps or MS which I do not need. But before I embark on that, let me know of your interest.
I have a page of turtles on stamps. It's from when I was a kid.
Note that I mentioned in the other thread that you can look up interests in the members directory. I did a quick look and found two other members collecting turtles.
i have several topical collecting areas:
Militaria, pretty losely defined, so Ian's garbage would be my gain. I don't need catalogue numbers, and am really motivated more by price (my outlay, not CV or percent thereof)
Bats (flying things seen mostly at night)
Turtles (for my mom)
Horses (for my daughter)
And Lars, thanks so much for initiating this and even reminding us of how to proceed. you're the best
David
i have a soft spot for penquins..even though they are messy like little kids !
I have the beginnings of a collection that I have been adding to as I stumble across candidates, but it is not a traditional topical collection because it does not concern itself with the subject matter of the stamp, but rather the stamp itself.
I call it
Big and Beautiful
Only stamps I like are chosen. The criteria are that
a) the stamp must be large (no absolute definition) and
b) I must like the stamp from an aesthetic standpoint -- that might be production, engraving, colour or design.
Not all stamps need apply, and certainly not 1970s Eastern European wallpaper, and very few, if any, stamps produced by modern multicolour photogravure. Engraving stands high on my list. Outstanding used gets preference over easy-to-buy mint.
Here are some samples:
(excess black area retained intentionally to preserve approximate scaling of size.
And a few covers:
The large French Colonial airmails are on my "hit list" right now, and the recent discussion of Argentina definitives has me going through albums on the shelf looking for some of the large definitive high values of the 1950s.
Roy
I have two topicals for myself;
--Cheetahs - stamps and covers
--Baseball - stamps and covers
For my daughter, I collect penguins;
for my son-in-law, I save polar bears;
for my wife, I collect honeybees.
Interesting thing about topical collections, sometimes they can fit many themes.
Here are a couple more from my "Big and Beautiful" collection that fit your themes. (I'd tease you with a big baseball stamp, but I don't have one!)
Roy
Interesting! I've tried to get my wife to collect teddy bears on stamps and postcards. No interest. Now if there were stamps with the Kardashians on them... (I don't put anything past USPS!)
Lots of great topics and photos. I collect giraffes and circus. I have other topics too, but these two are my favourite.
Tom, my guess is any Kardashian stamps would likely fit Roy's big criteria.
"Tom, my guess is any Kardashian stamps would likely fit Roy's big criteria."
So far, this is what we have, including the "Lighthouses' and "Tall ships" categories mentioned by a new member elsewhere (and that's what got me thinking about this):
1. Baseball (musicman)
2. Bats (the flying kind) (amsd)
3. Big and Beautiful (roy)
4. Cheetahs (musicman)
5. Circus (doodles69ca)
6. Giraffes (doodles69ca)
7. Honey Bees (musicman)
8. Horses (amsd)
9. Lighthouses (Linthus2017)
10. Mermaids (larsdog)
11. Militaria (amsd)
12. Penguins (philb, musicman)
13. Polar Bears (musicman)
14. Tall Ships (Linthus2017)
15. Turtles (BenFranklin1902, amsd)
16. WWII (Guthrum)
Feel free to send a private message if you share a topic, whether to buy, sell, or exchange stamps, but ALL offers and transactions must be in the appropriate area of this web site. Please don't post offers or solicitations in this thread.
Thanks!
Lars
Fire, fire fighting and fire prevention are some of my topics. Stamps, post cards, advertising and Cinderellas are some of the way I collect this topic. Here is a page of Fire Apparatus.
What a beautiful page vinman. So well laid out. Keep up the great work. Very interesting.
I've collected WW Christmas stamps for years and even managed to get several family members involved with the effort. With their help I've just started to put together a fair showing of Christmas Seals, too.
I've also been acquiring Scouting stamps for about as long, but have yet to organize and mount them into an album. (actually, I've started a couple of times, but was never happy with how it was going) I'd estimate somewhere around 300-400 stamps to mount in this collection.
Then, about 2 or 3 years ago I started to accumulate stamps w/Native American themes, but again, I haven't organized them into a collection yet. I think I have about 200-300 stamps to mount so far. I've included everything from Buffalo's, to Head Dress and even a couple of stamps with Cigar Store Indians. It's surprising how many countries have issued stamps with a Native American motive and other then the annual Christmas collection gathering, this is the topical that I'll likely concentrate the most effort into in the near future.
WB
Hi All
I collect the martial arts on stamps and my wife collects fish, sea life and thoroughbred dogs. That's enough to keep us going
Chimo
Bujutsu
Hi!
My main topic is Wild Mammals... then I collect anything else that I find interesting.
For those purposes, I collect and create maxicards. Also, I create personalized stamps, personalized postcards, personalized postmarks, and therefore personalized maxicards (maximum cards).
I believe this is the updated list.
1. Baseball (musicman)
2. Bats (the flying kind) (amsd)
3. Big and Beautiful (roy)
4. Cheetahs (musicman)
5. Christmas stamps and seals (whitebuffalo)
6. Circus (doodles69ca)
7. Giraffes (doodles69ca)
8. Fire, Fire Fighting, Fire Prevention (vinman)
9. Fish (Bujutsu
10. Honey Bees (musicman)
11. Horses (amsd)
12. Lighthouses (Linthus2017)
13. Martial Arts (Bujutsu)
14. Mermaids (larsdog)
15. Militaria (amsd)
16. Penguins (philb, musicman)
17. Polar Bears (musicman)
18. Scouting (whitebuffalo)
19. Sea life (Bujutsu)
20. Tall Ships (Linthus2017)
21. Thoroughbred dogs (Bujutsu)
22. Turtles (BenFranklin1902, amsd)
23. Wild Mammals (Dorincard)
24. WWII (Guthrum)
If anyone lists something for sale in those topics, there is who you may want to send a PM to. Obviously, there may be nothing I need in a lot of mermaid stamps, but I sure would appreciate the chance to look it over! I will do the same for you if I list anything others have listed as topical. Remember, don't post anything here about sales or offers. Use PM for that.
Lars
I'd also like to see more examples of topical collections if anyone else would care to share. (Thanks, vinman!) I probably have acquired about 75-80% of the material I have identified as being needed for my collection, but less than 20% of that is mounted and almost all of THAT is the boring repetition of the early 20th century Portuguese Colony Vasco da Gama stamps. 45 DIFFERENT catalog numbers for essentially the SAME stamp! Here is just one page:
The most interesting thing I have found so far is the stamp that ISN'T a mermaid. A 1987 set of stamps from Poland honoring Hans Christian Andersen included a stamp for "The Little Mermaid". Or at least that's what you would assume if you used Scott or Stanley Gibbons as your reference. I acquired that stamp and it SURE looked like Thumbelina to me, so after some detective work by michael78651 and sheepshanks, it turns out that only Michel has the stamp correctly identified. So I guess what I have here is an EFO of the "catalog error" variety:
This was listed wrong in my old 1998 set of Scott worldwide catalogs, was still wrong in my "new" 2015 set and is apparently still wrong in the current set. I almost hate to see them change it or that page is a lot less interesting.
Lars
Hi Lars,
I have a 16 page exhibit I put together that show some of the ways I collect my fire topic. I made it to show to folks who don't collect ways of collecting. I can send it as a file for the Stamporma exhibits section and just put a link in this thread.
Who do I send the file to?
Vince
Edit,
I just checked how to send an exhibit. I will try to send it tonight.
Before you follow those old instructions, please see this thread I just posted:
https://stamporama.com/discboard/disc_main.php?action=20&id=18514#138177
and PM me.
We'll arrange something.
Roy
I am a casual bird watcher, so I collect stamps do birds generally.
If I have a stamp of a bird I have seen I put it in a book with the date and details of the sighting.
A bird life list in the form of a stamp collection.
( I also love the tall ships, but a very general collection in a stock book. )
Being an amateur herpetologist, snakes have an special album in my collection.
Tony
When going through some duplicates I found a stamp from French Andorra (1969 European Water Charter) which just stunned me. It was modern stamp but beautifully engraved. At that time I thought I would put together a collection of the most beautiful stamps (with me as the sole judge). My plan is to get mint copies of the stamps to show their artistic beauty. I haven't even been able to find a mint example of that stamp for my collection.
Canada Scott E3 would be another one for the collection. Just a gorgeous stamp. I already have a mint example in my Canada collection.
The only thematic collection I have is Middle Ages, trying to focus on Vikings and Dark Ages.
Hi All,
I collect Orchids, Roses and trains. Thanks
Hi Everyone;
@ Lars;
Thanks, so much for this great thread. You knocked it outta the park!
Your thread is bound to grow very fast, and you can add additional threads just like:
Ra's Page of the Day (AIRMAILS) Part IV
Recent Acquisitions 12
This could be a great recruitment tool for new members, new 1st time collectors and other collectors looking for a new direction to take.
Nice looking pages of Fairy Tales by the way!
If you would want to make a database of members topical themes, just like our "penny black page, I would be happy to volunteer some of my time to do the research for you.
@ Roy;
Thanks for showing a really different topical collection. It can be a great example for beginners, that you can collect only what appeals to you, and not what others think you should collect.
I've also heard of collectors that only collect triangle or diamond shaped stamps. If we can get enough variety in our gallery of this kind of material it will breathe new life into our hobby and encourage younger people to collect.
@ whitebuffalo;
Do you include Aborigines of Australia? Here is my favorite set of Indian themed stamps: Canada #562-581 issued in 1972. I also like some of the colonial stamps of Africa showing the native people and their clothing styles and women's hairstyles. All great subject matter.
@ vinman;
What a great page layout. It's very creative, not just rows of boxes!
@ everyone
I would like to start several collections of themed topics. Some that I'm giving serious consideration to are; African culture and native peoples; tall ships & sail boats; Birds; and Christmas world wide. I especially like some of the unusual ones like Britain's Christmas angels, and the stained glass windows.
I think my first one will be the African collection, because I was in several African nations when I served in the US Navy, 1966-1968.
Happy hunting everyone!
still sortin'....
TuskenRaider
Ken, I've gathered stamps that portray South American Indians, Mayans, Aztecs, etc...and I do have the set you mention from Canada, but hadn't thought about expanding much farther then that. BTW, if you like the Canadian Indian set, check out the 1971 Canadian issue commemorating "The 100th Anniversary of the Death of Painter Paul Kane". It's a real beauty!
WB
I have been collecting windmills for a long time; that collection now includes the generators. Also collect water mills which blossomed out to include hydro-electric.
Since I was born in the Netherlands I could not resist collecting tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and snowdrops.
I also collect Europa CEPT used and European Union mint and used. The used CEPT stamps for the smaller countries are difficult to find and most listed as 'used' are really CTO or taken off the FDC!
Hi
My topical collections are:
(Ice) hockey
Automobiles
Comics - mainly North American characters at the moment - this one just started recently, so I don't have a very big collection yet.
I prefer stamps on cover, either FDCs or regular commercial or personal mail uses.
Interesting how many different topics are covered by the couple of dozen collectors who responded to this thread.
Eric

42. WWII (Guthrum)
Feel free to share slices of your collections, and if you have stamps that fit someone else's topical needs, you know who to contact. I know that I often end up with "extra" stamps finding stamps for my Topic (Mermaids). If I just need one stamp in a series, I may still end up buying the whole series. The rest are garbage to me, but could be gold for someone collecting Tall Ships or Deep Sea or something like that. There may be several similar opportunities for other Topical collectors.
Let me know if any corrections are needed in the list above. If you don't want to be contacted about offering in your topic, let me know and I will add "Do Not Contact" next to your name.
Let's see some Topical pages!
Lars
As an all-world collector I collect all topicals on any subject postally used as part of my general collection. However as a "what if"..
As a keen gardener with more than a passing interest in Botany, it would be the plant world.
Collected according to the Linnaen Taxonomy system , in ascending classification order of cultivar, species, genus, family etc. In order to make botanical sense it would have to include non-philatelic representation of the most important plants not currently available on stamps.
However time constraints do not allow me to collect stamps, real live plants, and seperately, plant stamps so it has to remain a "what if"! In any case the pictures of plants on stamps generally pale into insignificance compared with work of professional botanical artists and I would prefer I think to collect them.
Malcolm
Bringing up the rear on the 'topics we collect' list, I thought I'd aim a bit higher and submit 'Soviet Art' as a topic - which I've actually finished collecting, as it's not an expensive album to create. But there is a lot of it - the Russians do like their art, even stuff which is not obviously propagandist. (I have a section on 'Lenin', which does not include much good art.)
Here is a random page from my Soviet Art album, which is arranged chronologically by birthdate of artist:
The rubric in small type at the foot of each stamp gives position in set/complete set/single issue, description, date and SG number. Birth anniversaries are denoted as *, death anniversaries as †.
Consistency in type of font size throughout the album (which has 50+ double sided pages) was as much hard work as establishing birth and death dates of artists, and date of the painting. Those details could never have been attempted in pre-internet days.
Very nicely done!!
A gorgeous page, Guthrum.
Jopie:
"re: What topical do you collect?
I also collect Europa CEPT used and European Union mint and used. The used CEPT stamps for the smaller countries are difficult to find and most listed as 'used' are really CTO or taken off the FDC!"
I collect JFK, Princess Diana and triangle shaped stamps.
My topical would be classified by most as "Birds" however I only do certain varieties.
I have a collection of stamps, covers and postcards showing the "Mandarin Duck".
I have another collection of stamps, covers etc of any "Birds of Paradise".
My topic is Paleophilately.
Paleophilately is a topical collecting of post stamps and another kind of philatelic material (covers, post cards, postal stationery, post marks etc.) depicted dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals or plants, fossils, fossil found sites, humans ancestors, paleontologists and contributors to the science as well as some museums with significant paleontological collections.
In other worlds this site is about representation of Paleontology in Philately.
http://www.paleophilatelie.eu
"My topic is Paleophilately."
Dinosaurs, prehistoric animals, fossils.
I might be a bit late to the party but my excuse is that I am new to the hobby and computer crippled. I collect sea shells but only from island nations, sailing (tall ships) WWII partisans and movements, Battle of Trafalgar, named battles or major events of WWII, and stamps relating to JFK, and owls for my daughter.
The current set of US postcard stamps (Forever stamps) roll features sea shells. There are 4 different designs.
I collect NATO, Europa, Norden, EFTA, Malaria, Joint issues (e.g. US-Canada, France-Canada, etc), and a politically uncorrect topic that, yes, yes, exists widely on stamps, even for serious countries!. All used. Stamporama is a great place to find them. Michel
I have a collection of Tigers only mine is country specific Malay States and The Federated Malay States.
The second page I set up using Stanley Gibbons as Scott's only list 9 stamps SG list 20 and I still need 2 shades of the 20c .
Brian
I also collect the Malaya Malaya states but cannot easily tell if color varieties are due to ink or just fading. The ones I have run across are not in great condition. SG seems to be more creative on color names.
Time for an update of what we collect:

Cheers
Stevo
I was considering "stamps on stamps" as a topic or Christmas.
My topical interests at the moment are:
Flowers/Plants
Ships/Boats
JR
Time to add and UPDATE my listings.
Remove UN Annual Year of...and substitute instead
1. Malaria
2 World refugee Year (WRY)
3. Save the monument of NUBIA
4. Freedom From Hunger
Then for My Europa Listing (I collect Europa to 2000 only), please add:
EFTA
NATO
Norden
I see that I and Lemaven overlap a lot in our Topicals.
Note: For Topicals, I collect Mint, Used and FDC
And yesssss, it is out of control! For most of my topical collection, I am fairly well on my way to completion.
A discussion board subject of "Share your Topicals" would be nice to aggregate this information and feature some of the more interesting pages our membership has put together under Topicals! "Larsdog", if you update this list above, could you make it the first post of a "Share your Topicals" Discussion Topic. (unless you are comfortable using this post as the anchor...but a better title may encourage more sharing).
I for one would love to see some sample pages of the other topical subjects, and to share a few sample pages of mine.
rrr...
Thank you for the updated list and it's alphabetical!
What an interesting variety of topical collections!
My topical collections are:
Cardiology , Ronald Reagan, International Co-operation Year(1965), Expo ‘67, R.M.S. Titanic,
Volkswagens, and the 1960 Olympic Summer Games (Rome, Italy) / 1960 Olympic Winter Games (Squaw Valley, USA).
David
I should probably share my topical interests, too:
-- Peanuts (Snoopy & gang)
-- The Millennium (2000, 21st century, etc.)
I haven't actively worked on either topic in a while, although I was quite active in acquiring material that celebrated the millennium. I hope at some point to dig up all that material and organize it, with an eye to possibly creating a digital album.
Thanks, Lars, for organizing this discussion!
Per rraphy's most excellent suggestion I am going to create a new post soon with everyone's topical interests as the first entry that I can edit as needed so you don't have to scroll down to find the most up-to-date list. I can also add a link to your topical collection if you have it online. Please provide any updates here until I get the new post done. When I get it posted I will place a notice at the bottom of this post to see the new one and see if I can get this one locked.
Shine on all you crazy topical collectors!
I am collecting stamps showing the Douglas DC-3 aircraft to illustrate a short history of the plane. Surprising how many there are.
I collect stamps on stamps. Currently a disorganized mess, but will get straight someday.
Mel
angore, I think Christmas would make an outstanding topical collection. You could separate it out by Madonna and child, Christmas trees etc. I loved the recent wise men stamp.
I saw a nice stamps on stamps booklet from the ATA (American Topical Association ?) on Sunday at a local stamp show plus had a nice visit with the individual who setup a table with various booklets as well as CD's containing topical lists.
I collect bicycles. I love riding my bike and so my other hobbies are an extension of that. It is still early days, so I haven't figured out the best way to display them yet...but someday.
Also, I have my heart set on a 1970's collection--every stamp from that year. Thankfully some people on this forum have helped me significantly.
Ice Hockey. Wanna go eh?
Hi all,
Well my interests have changed but I have landed firmly now on collecting FDC's on the following...
FDC Album #1
Anything that is mechanical-ish and flies...
I have started a nice collection of FDC's in an album of everything from the Mariner Space Probe to Harriet Quimby to the Explorer II balloon to Louis Bleriot's airplane. Great Stuff!
FDC Album #2
Anything that floats on water (boats) or goes on train tracks.
I have started another nice collection of FDC's in an album on this topic.
Love all that stuff and have really started to like collecting FDC's.
JR
Johnny- I have a binder I call "Cool Stuff". It has no bounds other than it's all covers that I think are cool. That's the first thing I show non-collectors.
" "Cool Stuff". It has no bounds other than it's all covers that I think are cool. That's the first thing I show non-collectors."
Roy - enjoyed your exhibit of pretty items. Thanks for posting the link.
The self-sacrificing goats cover is something else....haven't seen anything like that before!
Hi BenFranklin/Roy,
I love that idea!
The cool stuff binder.
I'm starting one as we speak!
JR
Hi all,
I have stumbled on a potential interest area for topical collecting for myself.
It is "Stamps in Stamps"! Ha! I never knew that they existed!
I saw a small collection of 100 on a website for $25.
Seems pretty neat!
Anyone collect these?
JR
For the record, I also have the following collections, which are complete and so 'closed':
The Great Terror
The Stamps of Ivan Dubasov
(I am assuming there will be no more stamps commemorating the victims of Stalin's purges of the 1930s - The Great Terror - but I keep my eye out, just in case!)
I presume long 'chronological' collections don't count, which rules out my albums of 'The Third Reich' and 'Stalin's USSR'. The latter has got as far as 1948, so there is still a little way to go.
@JohnnyRockets: This FDC is currently available in Roy Lingen's current eBay Buck-a-Cover auction. Nice cover — if I collected stamps on stamps, I'd be bidding! I might anyway! (This cover would also fit in to a first-issues collection, a Tasmania collection,
Bob
P.S. I looked through all of Roy's current offerings, which amount to Paradise for FDC and maximum card collectors.
Hi Bob,
Yeah, that is one of my main bookmarked pages!
Love that site!
Thanks for the tip! There is A LOT of FDCs on that site, so easy to miss some.
JR
List of topics listed on a separate thread.
Please keep discussion here.
I will bump the other thread as updates are made.
Lars
I am not heavy into a topic but like stamps on stamps and those related the Rowland Hill centenary issued by the British commonwealth. However, I do not likely plan to keep a special album for them for now.
Hello Lars, when you get a chance i dabble in Swiss Military stamps and covers. phil
My topical collections (preferably mint, nicely centered):
1. Accordions
2. Bats
3. Classical music (composers, orchestras, performers, concert halls and music academies).
4. Golf
5. Writers (fiction)
6. Ladybugs/ladybird beetles
7. Volkswagen beetles (my first car, a 1968).
8. Stamps of unusual materials or design.
I will get these updated this weekend. I leave for work at 7:15 a.m. and get home a little before 6 p.m. if I don't stop anywhere along the way for gas or groceries or RedBox. Free time is limited during the week.
I pick up Olympic stamps for my daughter.
Scott
I've recently discovered I collect Worlds Fair. I've been buying covers and other collateral around the US ones. I have a Columbian Expo ticket and this week bought a 1965 NYC Worlds Fair ticket as well.
List updated.
I have posted my preliminary Mermaid pages to my web site. These is a link below and I have added a link to the listing page. If anyone wants a link to their online topical, send me the URL.
Larsdog's Mermaids
Hi,
my favorite topic is famous women, but only from European countries and from USA.
I collect mint stamps, postmarks, common covers, FDC-s.
Visit my site: http://www2.arnes.si/bcebul/index.htm
Here only stamps of my collection are shown.
I am interested to swap stamps of my interest.
In exchange I offer Slovenian stamps (new + old).
Hi,
I collect mainly Canada, covers, and the UK.
But have a sizable collection of 1961 Europa CEPT stamps, blocks and many covers.
Plus cheques with stamps on them.
Cheers,
John
Most of my topical collections are omnibus, organizational or United Nations related. Here's an updated listing of the topicals that I collect:

ATTENTION TOPICAL COLLECTORS:
Sometimes I have to buy a whole set to get the single topical stamp I am looking for. No problem, but instead of trying to sell a short set, there may be OTHER topical collectors interested in the leftovers.
EXAMPLE: I collect Mermaid stamps and the high value of the Vasco da Gama Portugal issue has a mermaid depicted. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the set than that one stamp. But some of those other stamps may be of interest to someone collecting "tall ships".
I propose that current topical collectors post here what they collect.
I will start it off:
LARSDOG - I collect Mermaids worldwide. Primarily stamps, but also selvage, cancellations, and covers (but I already have more than enough submarine covers). Primarily mythological, but a few biological (Manatees and Dugongs).
If I know what topicals are being collected, I might be able to put together a set of stamps from my leftovers that helps us both.
Please keep all individual transactions offline and any offers to buy or sell in the appropriate place.
This is just a space to list your needs:

re: What topical do you collect?
But before I embark on that, let me know of your interest.
re: What topical do you collect?
I have a page of turtles on stamps. It's from when I was a kid.
Note that I mentioned in the other thread that you can look up interests in the members directory. I did a quick look and found two other members collecting turtles.
re: What topical do you collect?
i have several topical collecting areas:
Militaria, pretty losely defined, so Ian's garbage would be my gain. I don't need catalogue numbers, and am really motivated more by price (my outlay, not CV or percent thereof)
Bats (flying things seen mostly at night)
Turtles (for my mom)
Horses (for my daughter)
And Lars, thanks so much for initiating this and even reminding us of how to proceed. you're the best

re: What topical do you collect?
i have a soft spot for penquins..even though they are messy like little kids !
re: What topical do you collect?
The large French Colonial airmails are on my "hit list" right now, and the recent discussion of Argentina definitives has me going through albums on the shelf looking for some of the large definitive high values of the 1950s.

re: What topical do you collect?
I have two topicals for myself;
--Cheetahs - stamps and covers
--Baseball - stamps and covers
For my daughter, I collect penguins;
for my son-in-law, I save polar bears;
for my wife, I collect honeybees.
re: What topical do you collect?
Interesting thing about topical collections, sometimes they can fit many themes.
Here are a couple more from my "Big and Beautiful" collection that fit your themes. (I'd tease you with a big baseball stamp, but I don't have one!)
Roy
re: What topical do you collect?
Interesting! I've tried to get my wife to collect teddy bears on stamps and postcards. No interest. Now if there were stamps with the Kardashians on them... (I don't put anything past USPS!)
re: What topical do you collect?
Lots of great topics and photos. I collect giraffes and circus. I have other topics too, but these two are my favourite.
re: What topical do you collect?
Tom, my guess is any Kardashian stamps would likely fit Roy's big criteria.

re: What topical do you collect?
Fire, fire fighting and fire prevention are some of my topics. Stamps, post cards, advertising and Cinderellas are some of the way I collect this topic. Here is a page of Fire Apparatus.
re: What topical do you collect?
What a beautiful page vinman. So well laid out. Keep up the great work. Very interesting.
re: What topical do you collect?

I collect the martial arts on stamps and my wife collects fish, sea life and thoroughbred dogs. That's enough to keep us going

re: What topical do you collect?
Hi!
My main topic is Wild Mammals... then I collect anything else that I find interesting.
For those purposes, I collect and create maxicards. Also, I create personalized stamps, personalized postcards, personalized postmarks, and therefore personalized maxicards (maximum cards).
re: What topical do you collect?
I believe this is the updated list.
1. Baseball (musicman)
2. Bats (the flying kind) (amsd)
3. Big and Beautiful (roy)
4. Cheetahs (musicman)
5. Christmas stamps and seals (whitebuffalo)
6. Circus (doodles69ca)
7. Giraffes (doodles69ca)
8. Fire, Fire Fighting, Fire Prevention (vinman)
9. Fish (Bujutsu
10. Honey Bees (musicman)
11. Horses (amsd)
12. Lighthouses (Linthus2017)
13. Martial Arts (Bujutsu)
14. Mermaids (larsdog)
15. Militaria (amsd)
16. Penguins (philb, musicman)
17. Polar Bears (musicman)
18. Scouting (whitebuffalo)
19. Sea life (Bujutsu)
20. Tall Ships (Linthus2017)
21. Thoroughbred dogs (Bujutsu)
22. Turtles (BenFranklin1902, amsd)
23. Wild Mammals (Dorincard)
24. WWII (Guthrum)
If anyone lists something for sale in those topics, there is who you may want to send a PM to. Obviously, there may be nothing I need in a lot of mermaid stamps, but I sure would appreciate the chance to look it over! I will do the same for you if I list anything others have listed as topical. Remember, don't post anything here about sales or offers. Use PM for that.

re: What topical do you collect?
I almost hate to see them change it or that page is a lot less interesting.

re: What topical do you collect?
Hi Lars,
I have a 16 page exhibit I put together that show some of the ways I collect my fire topic. I made it to show to folks who don't collect ways of collecting. I can send it as a file for the Stamporma exhibits section and just put a link in this thread.
Who do I send the file to?
Vince
Edit,
I just checked how to send an exhibit. I will try to send it tonight.
re: What topical do you collect?
Before you follow those old instructions, please see this thread I just posted:

and PM me.
We'll arrange something.

re: What topical do you collect?
I am a casual bird watcher, so I collect stamps do birds generally.
If I have a stamp of a bird I have seen I put it in a book with the date and details of the sighting.
A bird life list in the form of a stamp collection.
( I also love the tall ships, but a very general collection in a stock book. )

re: What topical do you collect?
When going through some duplicates I found a stamp from French Andorra (1969 European Water Charter) which just stunned me. It was modern stamp but beautifully engraved. At that time I thought I would put together a collection of the most beautiful stamps (with me as the sole judge). My plan is to get mint copies of the stamps to show their artistic beauty. I haven't even been able to find a mint example of that stamp for my collection.
Canada Scott E3 would be another one for the collection. Just a gorgeous stamp. I already have a mint example in my Canada collection.
re: What topical do you collect?
The only thematic collection I have is Middle Ages, trying to focus on Vikings and Dark Ages.
re: What topical do you collect?

re: What topical do you collect?
Hi Everyone;
@ Lars;
@ Roy;
@ whitebuffalo;
Do you include Aborigines of Australia? Here is my favorite set of Indian themed stamps: Canada #562-581 issued in 1972. I also like some of the colonial stamps of Africa showing the native people and their clothing styles and women's hairstyles. All great subject matter.
@ vinman;
Happy hunting everyone!
still sortin'....

re: What topical do you collect?
Ken, I've gathered stamps that portray South American Indians, Mayans, Aztecs, etc...and I do have the set you mention from Canada, but hadn't thought about expanding much farther then that. BTW, if you like the Canadian Indian set, check out the 1971 Canadian issue commemorating "The 100th Anniversary of the Death of Painter Paul Kane". It's a real beauty!

re: What topical do you collect?
I have been collecting windmills for a long time; that collection now includes the generators. Also collect water mills which blossomed out to include hydro-electric.
Since I was born in the Netherlands I could not resist collecting tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and snowdrops.
re: What topical do you collect?
I also collect Europa CEPT used and European Union mint and used. The used CEPT stamps for the smaller countries are difficult to find and most listed as 'used' are really CTO or taken off the FDC!
re: What topical do you collect?
Eric

Let's see some Topical pages!

re: What topical do you collect?
As an all-world collector I collect all topicals on any subject postally used as part of my general collection. However as a "what if"..
As a keen gardener with more than a passing interest in Botany, it would be the plant world.
Collected according to the Linnaen Taxonomy system , in ascending classification order of cultivar, species, genus, family etc. In order to make botanical sense it would have to include non-philatelic representation of the most important plants not currently available on stamps.
However time constraints do not allow me to collect stamps, real live plants, and seperately, plant stamps so it has to remain a "what if"! In any case the pictures of plants on stamps generally pale into insignificance compared with work of professional botanical artists and I would prefer I think to collect them.

re: What topical do you collect?

My topical would be classified by most as "Birds" however I only do certain varieties.
I have a collection of stamps, covers and postcards showing the "Mandarin Duck".
I have another collection of stamps, covers etc of any "Birds of Paradise".
re: What topical do you collect?
My topic is Paleophilately.
Paleophilately is a topical collecting of post stamps and another kind of philatelic material (covers, post cards, postal stationery, post marks etc.) depicted dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals or plants, fossils, fossil found sites, humans ancestors, paleontologists and contributors to the science as well as some museums with significant paleontological collections.
In other worlds this site is about representation of Paleontology in Philately.

re: What topical do you collect?
Dinosaurs, prehistoric animals, fossils.
re: What topical do you collect?
I might be a bit late to the party but my excuse is that I am new to the hobby and computer crippled. I collect sea shells but only from island nations, sailing (tall ships) WWII partisans and movements, Battle of Trafalgar, named battles or major events of WWII, and stamps relating to JFK, and owls for my daughter.
re: What topical do you collect?
The current set of US postcard stamps (Forever stamps) roll features sea shells. There are 4 different designs.
re: What topical do you collect?
I collect NATO, Europa, Norden, EFTA, Malaria, Joint issues (e.g. US-Canada, France-Canada, etc), and a politically uncorrect topic that, yes, yes, exists widely on stamps, even for serious countries!. All used. Stamporama is a great place to find them. Michel

The second page I set up using Stanley Gibbons as Scott's only list 9 stamps SG list 20 and I still need 2 shades of the 20c .

re: What topical do you collect?
I also collect the Malaya Malaya states but cannot easily tell if color varieties are due to ink or just fading. The ones I have run across are not in great condition. SG seems to be more creative on color names.

My topical interests at the moment are:
Flowers/Plants
Ships/Boats
JR
re: What topical do you collect?

What an interesting variety of topical collections!
re: What topical do you collect?
My topical collections are:
Cardiology , Ronald Reagan, International Co-operation Year(1965), Expo ‘67, R.M.S. Titanic,

re: What topical do you collect?
I should probably share my topical interests, too:
-- Peanuts (Snoopy & gang)
-- The Millennium (2000, 21st century, etc.)
I haven't actively worked on either topic in a while, although I was quite active in acquiring material that celebrated the millennium. I hope at some point to dig up all that material and organize it, with an eye to possibly creating a digital album.
Thanks, Lars, for organizing this discussion!
re: What topical do you collect?
Per rraphy's most excellent suggestion I am going to create a new post soon with everyone's topical interests as the first entry that I can edit as needed so you don't have to scroll down to find the most up-to-date list. I can also add a link to your topical collection if you have it online. Please provide any updates here until I get the new post done. When I get it posted I will place a notice at the bottom of this post to see the new one and see if I can get this one locked.
Shine on all you crazy topical collectors!
re: What topical do you collect?
I am collecting stamps showing the Douglas DC-3 aircraft to illustrate a short history of the plane. Surprising how many there are.
re: What topical do you collect?
I collect stamps on stamps. Currently a disorganized mess, but will get straight someday.

re: What topical do you collect?
angore, I think Christmas would make an outstanding topical collection. You could separate it out by Madonna and child, Christmas trees etc. I loved the recent wise men stamp.
re: What topical do you collect?
I saw a nice stamps on stamps booklet from the ATA (American Topical Association ?) on Sunday at a local stamp show plus had a nice visit with the individual who setup a table with various booklets as well as CD's containing topical lists.
re: What topical do you collect?
I collect bicycles. I love riding my bike and so my other hobbies are an extension of that. It is still early days, so I haven't figured out the best way to display them yet...but someday.
Also, I have my heart set on a 1970's collection--every stamp from that year. Thankfully some people on this forum have helped me significantly.

Ice Hockey. Wanna go eh?
re: What topical do you collect?
Hi all,
Well my interests have changed but I have landed firmly now on collecting FDC's on the following...
Love all that stuff and have really started to like collecting FDC's.

re: What topical do you collect?
Johnny- I have a binder I call "Cool Stuff". It has no bounds other than it's all covers that I think are cool. That's the first thing I show non-collectors.

re: What topical do you collect?
Hi all,
I have stumbled on a potential interest area for topical collecting for myself.
It is "Stamps in Stamps"! Ha! I never knew that they existed!
I saw a small collection of 100 on a website for $25.
Seems pretty neat!
Anyone collect these?

re: What topical do you collect?
For the record, I also have the following collections, which are complete and so 'closed':
The Great Terror
The Stamps of Ivan Dubasov
(I am assuming there will be no more stamps commemorating the victims of Stalin's purges of the 1930s - The Great Terror - but I keep my eye out, just in case!)
I presume long 'chronological' collections don't count, which rules out my albums of 'The Third Reich' and 'Stalin's USSR'. The latter has got as far as 1948, so there is still a little way to go.
re: What topical do you collect?
@JohnnyRockets: This FDC is currently available in Roy Lingen's current eBay Buck-a-Cover auction. Nice cover — if I collected stamps on stamps, I'd be bidding! I might anyway! (This cover would also fit in to a first-issues collection, a Tasmania collection,
Bob
P.S. I looked through all of Roy's current offerings, which amount to Paradise for FDC and maximum card collectors.
re: What topical do you collect?
Hi Bob,
Yeah, that is one of my main bookmarked pages!
Love that site!
Thanks for the tip! There is A LOT of FDCs on that site, so easy to miss some.

re: What topical do you collect?
I am not heavy into a topic but like stamps on stamps and those related the Rowland Hill centenary issued by the British commonwealth. However, I do not likely plan to keep a special album for them for now.
