As a clarification, I am not counting Jopie in the 'motley' part of that description. She is a great lady and deserves a medal for keeping Phil under control.

I've met two people from the board in person. Vince invited me to join his stamp club, so I see him monthly now. And I got friendly through email with Ernie, so when I was in Jacksonville last fall I had dinner with him and his wife Bonnie. We are planning a trip to APS headquarters in Pennyslvania as we can arrange it.
In my model car hobby, I know people from around the world, many of which I've met at different US hobby events. I have 4 different European vendors coming to my show in two weeks. My nosy sister in law was looking at my FaceBook friends and emailed me that all those non-US friends I had listed were scammers.. I replied, nope those are my friends and I know them in person! Hobbies really bring folks together.
I use Skype,it's nice to be able to put a face to a voice and I chat face to face with my sister in law in the UK and any one else on my contact list .Just recently I was skyping with one of my daughters in Thailand ,and it's free.

As Brian says, Skype is an easy to use program that does just what you require and it's free. I use it at work to speak to colleagues in Thailand, USA and Germany. Privately I do not use it that much. Only for a few friends in Germany and Switzerland.
I spend half my work day on Skype, but we project screens rather than our own faces. Used for business meetings with PowerPoint and other on screen programs. I meet with Japan, China, France, Italy and Ireland as well as US sites in Puerto Rico and across the mainland. Most of these folks I also know face to face since we have an annual conference.
Occasionally use Skype with family in UK but delay in speech/picture is irritating and satellite internet doesn't help. Rather use the 'phone, I already know what the person looks like.

Jopie and i remember all our stamp friends...even if they move to Carolina !
Just about 12 years ago (in Spring, 2005, I think) I was in New York City on a work assignment and was able to go to the Mega Show at the Javitts Center. I meet up with the most motley crew of stamp collectors, John Goyette and David Giles from Canada and Bobgggg, Phil and Jopie from NY. To this day, we still exchange phone calls and emails along with the occasional comment on the discussion board. Great friends all...
Last year I thought of trying to find a cheap way to use my computer to make calls to fellow collectors in other countries. Thanks to an website called Poptox, I was able to do just that to speak with a long time collector friend in India. And today I had the pleasure of talking with another fellow SOR member and email buddy in Ireland. The cost was less than 50c total to make these calls and now we both have voices to go along with our names.
Does anyone else use their computer to speak to fellow collectors around the world???
