You have not picked an easy area to collect or catalog.
This is a general list but there is also Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Treaty Ports and many others
Scott catalog is not great
Gibbons China Specialized is better
Michel Specialized is quite good but German
Ma's Illustrated for pre 1980 is the one I mainly use - English
Chan's is also quite good
and the above China Stamp Society has a catalog but I cannot comment on it
Back in town. Just want to thank all who helped alleviate my confusion with Chinese stamps. I can see there is a fair amount of work ahead (if a hobby can be called 'work'), but now I at least have some direction. Again, thank you all.
Imperial China often has English wording on the stamps: Imperial Chinese Post or something like that.
Republic of China (before civil war and later Taiwan): ä¸è¯æ°‘國 (Note the character that vaguely looks like a capital R)
People's Republic of China (PRC / Mainland China): ä¸åŽäººæ°‘共和国 (Note the inverted V character)
I have written a number of country profiles that might be of use in trying to understand Chines postal history. Please refer to http://www.stampworldhistory.com/country-profiles-2/asia/china-empire/ and subsequent profiles.
I'm a confused newbie here and I hope somebody can help a bit. I'm trying to combine pages and stamps from four albums/collections into one and put them in some sort of logical order.
I have pages (with stamps) headed CHINA, CHINA (PEOPLES REPUBLIC), CHINA (REPUBLIC OF) and CHINA-FORMOSA along with several hundred loose Chinese(?) stamps.
Are these four "China" categories, by convention, normally treated as separate entities for philatelic purposes or are they usually just lumped into one "China"? And if separate entities, is there any relatively easy way to tell which entity a stamp belongs to?
