Close. Deutsches Frauenwerk was a Nazi organization for women, a proper name that is difficult to translate. I would suggest: In support of the German Women's Association - Motherhood.

I would not say motherhood. The German word would be Mutterschaft. Mütterdienst is - in my opinion - a service for the benefit of mothers, Mütter being plural.

Jansimon, I had my doubts about Mütterdienst. You could well be right. I chose 'motherhood' as the translation because, in the context, it seems - to me - to fit better. In Nazi Germany, motherhood was considered to be an important service to the nation. Mothers were even awarded medals for their 'services'. So, I interpreted Mütterdienst as 'service by the mothers' rather than 'for the mothers'. Also because the picture shows a mother with her children rather than a someone supporting mothers. Maybe we need a native speaker to chime in .......

The Mütterdienst was a department of the Deutsches Frauenwerk that was responsible for the mother classes in the socalled marriage or mothers' schools.
In these schools newly engaged or married women should be educated about the higher duties of motherhood and housekeeping. They were taught how to care for infants, how to make your own clothes as well as more dubious subjects such as racial doctrine and Germanic folklore..

Next month I'm starting a new adult ed course at Simon Fraser University, "Social History of the Third Reich," taught by a young Canadian-German PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia. I've taken two other courses from him — excellent instructor. This time around, I've offered him images of Third Reich items in my collection — covers, postcards, stamps, etc. This is one of the images I'm sending him; I'm curious about the legend on the reverse of the postcard.
