There was a Stampex too in the USA once upon a time !
The sheets below are from 1938 when the show was held in Newark, New Jersey and organized by the New Jersey Philatelic Federation.
The central 'stamp' design shows an aeroplane flying over a Newark skyline with the City founder, Robert Treat standing over it all. Great design.
This is a copy of a post submitted by mdroth on April 15, 2015 under another thread.
Just got these...thought some of the Minnesota folk would like to see...
Very nice Exhibition labels !
I have been collecting this topic for some time and GB and USA Philatelic Exhibitions give the most satisfaction.
I will put up some more from the USA over the weekend.
Londonbus1
i have a few also Mr. Bus heres a pair from 1953 !
Philb,
Your two and I'll raise you two !!
i am busted...but i will be back with my friends !!!
I was cleaning off my desk (again) and found these labels sitting in an old box. I was surprised to see how well the 1913 label looked, still nice and fresh even though is is on paper.
Mike
I am back Mr. Bus, How about these from Atlantic City .
There are many. I settled on just a sample:
The "Let's Get Associated" label opened yet another trap door of philately because I apparently happened upon a variety the experts didn't even know about:
I had no idea what that label was for, but kept it for its relevance. Years later I just happened to read an article that explained what the series was all about and realized I had something the experts didn't know about! That's what makes this hobby so fun!!!
Lars
Early on, mention was made about a guidebook or catalog that explored the various stamp shows, exhibitions, etc. as noted in the images proved by several members.
What's the title of the book?
Bruce
For several years I served as chair and/or exhibits chair of VANPEX (Vancouver Philatelic Exhibition), but I've never heard of any publication about specific exhibitions. Are you perhaps thinking of the exhibiting guide published by APS?
Bob
Since there has been recent interest in show Cinderellas I will post on this old thread.
I was active with PNSE,The Philadelphia National Stamp Exhibition for over twenty years when it finally ended in 2015 because there were not enough volunteers to keep it going. It was originally known as SEPAD, The Associated Stamp Clubs of Southeastern Pennsylvania an Delaware. I have a collection of show labels and memorabilia. I will post some of the items I find interesting.
These are from the first SEPAD in 1938.
These Liberty Bell Cinderellas are from the 1942 show.
There was a post whether there is a book on show Cinderellas. I have a list of SEPAD/PNSE show labels put together by Herb Trenchard. He is a collector of show memorabilia and spoke at one of my local clubs about fifteen years ago. I think he has lists for other shows. I will be at the APS for SCOPEX in June and add to my list of things to do, see if there are any references on show memorabilia.
I will search the different literature dealers and see if the is a reference for show Cinderellas.
Vince
I scanned this much earlier today but then my internet went out. I was not trying to duplicate any but most of what I have has already been shown.
One for the Ladies !!
NORTH SHORE PHILATELIC SOCIETY.
1939 Exhibition & Bourse Souvenir Sheet showing the Republican Wigwam !
Beautifully engraved sheet by Henry Grimsland.
CONNPEX 1968. Connecticut Philatelic Society event.
Sheet contains 4 rouletted label reproductions.
ATEX 1937-40
Atlantic City Stamp Club, Annual Exhibition.
Pre-show Publicity labels.
1939 SOCIETY OF PHILATELIC AMERICANS ANNUAL CONVENTION.
Hosted by the Maryland Philatelic Society who no longer exist under that name, I could not even find a date for the event during searches.
Nice set of sheets with historical inscriptions about which I am sure one of you from Baltimore will enlighten us.
Won't you ?
Wot ! No one from Baltimore ?
Maybe someone can tell us what this fine-looking building is at the centre of these 1938 labels produced for the Denver Stamp Club Annual Exhibition. They are actually Denver SC labels reproduced on coloured papers for the event. Nice idea, Se-Tenant with event information.
So, anyone from Denver?
I'm not from Denver, but I collect postcards ... state capitol!
Ikey-Pikey is correct!
That is Colorado's state capitol building.
You beat me to it!
The Souvenir sheets speak for themselves. The Garfield-Perry Stamp Club so often produce nice items for events they host, these are no exception.
I love the reversed colours on each pair of sheets.
But are they not Postage Stamps ? Or is that just a spoof ?
My understanding is that they were valid for postage in Grenada at the time of issue.
Here is a cover from the second SEPAD show with the show label printed on the envelope and a show logo in the meter marking.
These two labels are from the first SEPAD.
It's those 11th Philatelic Congress labels again......this time without the help of Garfield Perry !
Or was it ?
Only bi-coloured this time but just as effective.
The Bay Ridge Stamp Society Labels from 1932. There are also a number of Souvenir Sheets which I will show next time if you want to see them.
I believe this was a Masonic Stamp Society but information has been hard to find. They held their meetings at a Masonic Hall in Bay Ridge.
Interesting design too for the labels, the top picture showing what was stated to be from a Proof Sheet.
Having searched for some time I can find no other souvenirs from this Society other than these below, a 5th Year Anniversary sheet (1937) and sheets from PB Anniversary (1940).
If anyone comes across any, please contact me, thank you.
The rest next time.
WESTPEX.
San Francisco, California area Event, first held in 1960, under the Organization , Association for Western Philatelic Exhibitions.
Souvenirs (Seals) have been issued along with covers bearing the same Cachet design have been produced since the very first event.
They appear to be serious about their souvenirs as these modern day types from 2011 will show.
More from Westpex another day.
1943 North Shore Philatelic Society Exhibition, Chicago.
Another wonderful engraving from Henry Grimsland.
One of the most drab designs I have seen for a US Exhibition. even looks a bit odd.
Westpex 1966. One of a set of 4 of the same design.
CHICAGO PHILATELIC SOCIETY?
66th Anniversary, 1952. (Grimsland)
Would the Philatelic Truck count? It was a mobile exhibition of US stamps.
The printers' souvenir cards from CAPEX 78 and 87
Roy
The 'Truck' can of course be included. Wonderful story and fascinating piece of Philatelic History. The varieties are hard to find.
The 'Imposters' from Canada are nice too !!
Something from Oklahoma.
"The 'Imposters' from Canada are nice too !!"
Yes -
Heidi can be a bit of a distraction from one's train of thought.....
Poor horse looks knackered !!
Nice, Michael....
I haven't seen that one before - I like it!
I didn't know there was a Miami in Oklahoma !! With stamps, you can learn something new every day. (Yesterday it was BIF but that has nothing to do with USA Exhibitions !! )
Off the main topic, but apropos to Miami Oklahoma, I sold this one just last week:
Roy
Anyone for a bit of Buffalo !
Little bit of History from the Glen Ellyn Philatelic Club, Chicago. Formed in 1937 and still going strong today. I couldn't resist this letter with Cinderella Label affixed.
Thoroughly fascinating thread! Since someone poated a Philatelic Truck sheet already, here's one of the scarce overprints. You can see the others here:
http://www.sccscards.com/gallery/FPS/fps.html
Greg,
Very nice and thanks for that link to the others!
These have always held an interest for me.
For those who like daredevil pilots, this sheet is for you.
From 'Westpex 2009' and commemorating artistamp guru Donald Evans who went far too soon, in a fire in Holland in 1977, only 32 years old.
http://www.artnet.com/artists/donald-evans/
The Cleveland Cover Club produced some very colourful sheets for their 2nd Annual Exhibition in 1940.
Here are show programs from the first and second "SEPAD" exhibitions in Philadelphia. SEPAD changed it's name to PNSE, Philadelphia National Stamp Exhibition in the 90's. The show is now defunct due to lake of volunteers to run it.
The Essex Stamp Club and Stampex, 1945. A year to celebrate ?
About the US side of Phiatelic Exhibition material I am working somewhat blindly. I am led to understand there is now a catalogue of such items but I have no more information than that. If anyone can point me in the right direction I will be grateful.
Labels and souvenir sheets exist for many exhibitions and Society events....or simply for advertising Stamp clubs and Societies. They range in price from pennies to a $100 or more.
Some might say the topic is just too vast and should be reduced into sections. One cannot collect everything after all.......but it doesn't stop one from trying !
I decided early on to collect those I liked and could afford...and that's what we'll see here. Of course, it goes without saying I will still be going after those I cannot afford !
There will also be others shown which just found their way onto my desk and which are rather poor in quality and design. Have to have the rough with the smooth...so they say.
THIRD INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION, 1936.
May 9th-17th, Grand Central Palace, New York.
Lovely design by the American Bank Note Company depicting Mercury, Messenger of the Gods together with the modes of transport for mail delivery around the Globe. One of my favourite USA Exhibition items.
Other labels were produced for this event.
