it's a postal marking, Antonio, referring to a bag that was presumed empty but was not. it likely helps explain why the envelope was received late, although we can't say that for sure, as we have no receiving marks showing, but the dated meter can leave no room for guessing as to when its journey started.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting a received cancel, but I turned the cover over, and there it was to my surprise.
A Boston, Mass, South Postal Annex duplex dated July 7, 1964!
and seven month lag
a classic example of "The Check Is In The Mail"!
i just noticed that the corner card shows Boston 1; ZIP was implemented July of that year, and one might expect the corner card to reference the full ZIP.
I'm sorry David, I'm not following you. Where are you seeing the "Boston 1" ?

yes, referring to the return address, which is also sometimes called a corner card
it is NOT a postal marking, but the sender's envelope. Michael is likely correct
I am not sure if the marking "Found in supposedly empty equipment" is a US postal marking or a marking made by the bank. Any ideas?
