Yes, on the day of my demise philately will not be on my mind.
Stamp prices are definitely not nose diving.
If true - which is very debatable- - then that would be a positive for me, as I collect for fun - not profit.
More affordable stamps coming on the market!
This has been debated to death over the last many, many decades.
there are ebbs and flows; some stuff goes up, others down. Early GB can be had at 5% CV; US CE1 and 2 tied to cover range from 50c to $20... just two examples. But stuff I collect is going up, not down. Pity I'm not in a selling mood.
I think the hobby as we know it is going to go through major changes as older collectors die. I can't imagine exactly what these changes will be, but I am sure they will happen. I don't think most new collectors will be interested in "classic" material, but all of this is only my opinion and I have been wrong many times and may be wrong about this as well. I just know that many things known as "antiques" have gone through major changes in price and desirability. Some things are actually more collectible, most have gone the other way. What will happen to the stamp market? Who knows? But IMHO it will change!

Buying prices (as selling to a dealer) or selling prices (as selling to a collector)?
I recently found something that shocked me a bit. I went into the member's data base and spent a couple hours just looking at the information. I was amazed by the number of members who had been members for several years who had never bought or sold a stamp and whom I had never seen in the discussion forum. I am not criticizing anyone, I'm just really curious why they are here. Maybe it's just to get information from the discussion area, which is fine. Has anyone ever done a comprehensive study to find out what percentage of our 803 members buy or sell stamps here? Again, none of this was meant as a criticism, just an observation!
" Has anyone ever done a comprehensive study to find out what percentage of our 803 members buy or sell stamps here?"
My main concern with older collectors passing is not so much what it does to stamp prices but what percentage of those collections survive the "ownership change" and what percentage of them are simply landfilled.
I know nobody of the people I have around me will take the time to properly evaluate and resell my collection of tens of thousands of mostly cheap stamps.
One of the reasons I started selling off the huge collection my father had and parts of my own collection many years ago was just for the reason that I was afraid that someday the stamp collections would wind up in the dump. I have no children and my nephews and niece have absolutely no interest in stamps. So obvioousy I can not take it with me - so that is was my motivation to start selling. I still have several of my own collections which I have not parted with but I think about it all of the time. It is no longer a matter if I will sell them but when ?
"I was afraid that someday the stamp collections would wind up in the dump. "
At present there are 26 Sellers in the auctions(10 of which also sell in the Approvals) and 41 Sellers in the Approvals.
Therefore there are currently 57 different members selling.
The easiest way to determine the number of members buying is for Tim to release the number of individual members that were sent invoices over the past couple of months (ie for April and for March) If it is possible.
EDIT
It took an hour or two but the number of members who bought in the Auctions and Approvals over the last 30 days is 107. This number includes the sellers that bought as well.
EDIT EDIT
Eleven of the sellers also bought items from members during the last 30 days.
A friend sent me a blub about stamp prices nose diving due to the older collectors passing. To me it looks like a buying opportunity...i am not concerned about the value of stamps on the day of my demise. Cheerful eh ?
