.....in apparent value.

I love this stamp and I thought I made some good buys of this issue last year on several MNH and MLH. The intent was to post a few on my store at a time. MNH were selling around $100+ or -, and MLH were selling for $70-$100 ( not just in my store) I've sold a few at decent profits, but none of late.

Looked recent sales of this stamp on Ebay (I know, I know) and was shocked to see so many in the $50 range, and nice looking items.

So much for my "keen" buying of specific stamps. Can't decide whether to just dump them all or wait ( BTW, I just turned 76).

Arghh!

re: Famous #158 "Bluenose" sinks....

The secret to avoiding getting into this situation is "turnover". Do you remember when the US Zeppelin set was the hot issue and climbed up towards five figures and then fell back down again? It was a "bubble" and those who held onto their stock waiting for them to go back up lost out. Buy and sell when you can at "market price". If you find yourself in a rising market (like the zepps) do not hold out for the peak - sell and find another set at a bargain price and sell. If you hang onto stamps for speculation you will find that you have fallen victim to the "Buy high and sell low" school of economics. Turnover is the key. Just my two cents on a Tuesday morning.

re: Famous #158 "Bluenose" sinks....

When I look at what dealers are asking on HipStamp.... if I take the five cheapest offers and draw the line above it..... the price point is about $70 for hinged and $145 for never hinged. Which is about 1/3rd of catalog. That in of itself is kind of ridiculous. But if you're using, say auction realizations from dealers like ckstamps and nystamps for sales points..... not sure how representative that is of the retail market.

re: Famous #158 "Bluenose" sinks....

I'm really sorry John that the prices have gone down so much. I bought my copy, MNH well centered, in the 1980's when people were investing in Canada's stamps. I paid much more for mine than it sounds like you will get for yours. That's too bad but I guess there's not much that can be done. Good luck and I hope you make out OK. I've picked up some great stuff from you over the last couple years. I am very thankful I buy material because I like it rather than as an investment. I probably have many items that are worth less, maybe even much less, than I paid for them!
EDIT: This is sort of relevant and not meant to be insulting. I was just starting a book in a series by J. A. Jance that I really like and this showed up on page 3. "You find sympathy in the dictionary between Sh&* and syphilis". Very few people feel sorry for sellers, I found that out during my many years as an antique dealer!! But good luck, I hope the price goes back up a bit!

Joe....I am deeply offended by your edit!

Just kidding. This stuff goes with the territory. So far, most of my "buys" at auction are going pretty good, albeit somewhat slow at times. It's the one offs like the Bluenose that seem to be not working out as well. Maybe I'll should learn from it.

It is sounds like I'm whining it's certainly not my intent, and I certainly don't expect anything from members.

I thought it would be good discussion to share bad with good. I welcome others "whining" as it give us some current news/trends, etc.

We had the same thing here in Australia in the 70's/80s there was a stamp boom the 1971 Christmas block of 25, 25 x 7 cent stamps shot up to $300.00 and people were paying it .
I bought mine a couple of years ago cost me $19.00 go figure!!!

There have been many examples outside of philately as well. The two that come to mind especially are Beanie Babies and sports cards. I knew people who were spending huge amounts in both of these areas and then the prices plummeted!!!

re: Famous #158 "Bluenose" sinks....

I think OP is referring to recent trends in price softness - not the delta from the historical bubbles of the 70s and 80s.

Still, Scott values for many countries seem to be out of line at least with online sellers' pricing on eBay and HipStamp. I can envision targeted reductions in certain countries over time in catalog valuations - I don't see them doing a wholesale slashing to 'retail' as they attempted in 1988-1990.

Even Gitner in the Stamp Market Tips column in Linn's mentions Scott values being too high for items he tips in the column at times.

John, I just had a look through the Canada part of your HipStamp store as I do about once a week. Some great stuff including a couple I'm thinking about. One is a very nice paste up pair that you don't see very often!! I saw your Bluenose stamps, very nice copies! A few years ago they would be snapped up very quickly. Could part of the problem be that almost all serious Canada stamp collectors already have one? I know it was one of the first serious items my wife and I searched out. A friend of ours was a part time stamp dealer and he sold us beautiful copies of the Bluenose and Parliament Building stamps - both MNH and beautifully centered! I paid a heck of a lot more for my Bluenose than you are charging. Best of luck and keep the great stuff coming!!
