this cover, mailed in June 1978 and franked with $1.01 in postage, is likely an insured cover, with 15c for first class (despite the air mail stamps, air mail had recently been eliminated) and 85c for insurance for amounts between $10 and $50. That brings us to a penny overpaid.

Is that a logical leap on my part?

I just went through Beecher & Wawrukiewicz, U.S. DomesticPostal Rates 1872-2011 and concur with your analysis on the rate.

Vincent,

possible, although if I'm looking at the charts correctly, it adds 45c or 55c to the 15c, giving us 60c or 70c for the franked $1.01.

Were you thinking slightly different lines
