Hi Sally:
The Chinese communists have been flooding the U.S. with counterfeit stamps for a while. Apparently, the government doesn’t care. I got a tip from somewhere that the counterfeiters have trouble duplicating the micro printing used on a lot of our definitives. This is a small “usps” placed in different places on a given issue. Under a lens, the real printing is sharp and crisp and easily read. On the counterfeits, the printing is indistinct to the point of being illegible. After learning this, I went back through my album a few years and, sure enough, I found a few and removed them.
I looked at the snow globes that I have and, unfortunately, this issue is not micro printed. I hope that others can offer more tips on how to spot the fakes. The tip above has been very useful for the microprinted issues.
Thanks for the confirmation that it wasn’t the microprinting- I looked under a lens and couldn’t find any microprinting anywhere.
My next step will be to check tagging but I understand even some of the counterfeits have the correct tagging now.
Still fun to look for them though. Have found several counterfeit flag stamps, Purple Heart stamps, and just got one of the Otters in the Snow that is obviously not real but went through the mail just fine
The matter of counterfeit stamps being used for US Postage - and the USPS seemingly not caring has troubled me for some time. A Seller had MANY listed on Ebay. I contacted him and asked if HE wasn't troubled that they were counterfeit. His reply was that if he checked the "Uncertified" box he's not guaranteeing a thing. Sounds like a heck of a way to run a railroad to me (aka USPS).
In the UK the counterfeiters' adverts say "for stamp collectors only" or "for study only".

Wayne Youngblood spoke about recent counterfeits on the Noble Spirit podcast.
Seems there are multiple sources in China. As said above some of the newer stamps even have tagging.
The big problem is that these are being advised everywhere from eBay to Facebook as low as $19.00 per roll. These ads pop up as quick as they can be deleted.
Harvey, at least since 2012.
Get yourself a UV light and look for the band that is on all original U S Postage for the last 20-30 years or more.
Have checked them all under SWUV and LWUV. They all looked the same but didn’t really see any band? What would I be looking for? There seemed to be faint overall glow on all of the stamps but nothing stood out and no afterglow either

Viewing the youtube video, appears that no Chinese counterfeit US stamps were used. They were mailing thousands of packages using labels indicating fake postage paid.

In the first issue of StampEd, counterfeit and genuine examples of the 2023 US snow globes stamps are pictured and identified as to which are real and which are not. But they are so close in appearance that I cannot figure out what would tip someone off that some are counterfeit.
I have temporary possession of a large quantity of these stamps and am wondering how to tell genuine from counterfeit. It may be that the colors are a little bit darker and the reflections a bit brighter on the counterfeits, but it may just be an artifact on the digital screen or part of the printing. Lots of genuine issues differ slightly in color ….
Anyone have any information that might help?
