Very nice, Tom. What an odd and interesting story.
My favorite part of running my eBay store is that I have license to buy big lots of covers to sort through. I find neat stuff for my own collection, and connect with people who buy some of the unusual covers I have for sale.
And sometimes I get all the way through scanning and preliminary listing of an item when I decide, "Hey! I like that!" and keep it. This is one of those occasions. I thought I had an ordinary airmail cover from New York to California. Number 10 envelope, double rate postage. There are folks who collect airmail usage from all eras so this would sell. Then I notice it says, "Poltergeist Contract" on it. Odd.. which took me to my best friend Google...
I looked up the sender Dr Nandor Fedor not expecting much... Score! He was a leading expert on Poltergeists! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nandor_Fod ...
I read his biography on Wikipedia and then looked up the recipient, D Hereward Carrington, and he too was listed as an expert on Poltergeists! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hereward_C ...
The date on the cover is 195_ with the last digit missing. The stamp C-39 was issued January 18, 1949. Carrington died in 1958 so our time frame is between 1950-58 for this cover. The airmail rate changed from 6 to 7 cents in 1958 as well. The two of them co-authored "Haunted People: The Story of the Poltergeist Down the Centuries. New York: Dutton, 1951" so this may have held that contract.
So the cover has not been listed on eBay. It's going in my "Cool Stuff" album!
