One of my web pages — A Charles Lindbergh Puzzle — includes a discussion about the C56 reprint and shows examples from my collection. Most of the errors in the reprints result from sloppy printing, but some are clearly intentional.
When I was six years old, in 1949, I saw the Spirit of St. Louis, at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, just as it’s pictured on the linen-surface postcard you’ll see when you open my web page.

Bob... I've been to the Smithsonian several times and have enjoyed the various displays. If you have the opportunity, visit the Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH. Truly some magnificent items on display! BTW... In 1929 I was a mere one year old!
Correction... I meant 1949... not 1929. I'm not that old yet!
I recently picked up a Spain C56 reprint. I thought I would pass along an image of the original C56 (deep green) versus the reprint (washed out green). The original C56 is on top. Also note the smudge on the left side of the stamp.
