I collect US ‘Dead Letter Office’ (DLO) covers including both rubber stamped covers and those which carry Post Office labels. These covers were sent back to a local Post Office and if the Post Office could not determine the addressee or the return address then they were forwarded to the Deal Letter Office. You can learn more in this YouTube video that I did on this topic

Here are some of my Dead Letter Post Office labels cover pages. First up, a rare Scott #OXB7a on cover from Jersey City N.J.Image Not Found

When and how does a dead letter office dispose of such mail?

The USPS periodically holds auctions for any merchandise and other things of value online via a contracted company. They use this company to hold the auctions.

Note that the Atlanta facility which currently hands all ‘dead letter letters and parcels’ is poorly run and has significant issues with employee theft (not my opinion, this is the opinion of the Federal Office of Management and Budget auditors. For example, one of the audits found that dead letters with cash and most importantly, gift cards, were to the tune of hundreds of thousands dollars. It has been an on-going issue for at least 25 years and I think they may have made some improvement in the last 7-8 years.
