re: intresting cover

Starting in 1879 the US Post Office Department required a receiving post office to apply a cancel to mail showing when it was received. It was also the practice for the forwarding post office to add a cancel to the front of the cover for when it left that post office. It was also around this time when free forwarding was implemented.
