I remember the event well!
I find the stories of old ships fascinating!
I was describing this cover today for my first weekly ebay auction of the new year, and I found it such a cool bit of history that I had to share.
Ok, I'll admit, it was a tricky headline, as it was no longer a US ship when sunk by a British submarine, but sunk it was.
The USS Phoenix started life as a US light cruiser CL-46, commissioned in 1938. After much active duty in the Pacific during WWII she was sold to Argentina in 1951 and named the Diecisiete de Octubre (C-4). In 1956 they renamed her the ARA General Belgrano (got it yet?)
On May 2, 1982 the General Belgrano was sunk by the British attack submarine HMS Conqueror during the Falklands War with much loss of life, and I am sure that many of us old-timers remember the event well.
