That is a really nice cover.
Ya, Tom,
The mystery is, how did the cover get to Bombay without an addressee? Doesn't look like anything has been erased.
I frequently see philatelic covers addressed to a US collector in a foreign land. Like maybe a business traveler taking advantage of his prospective trip to have some goodies waiting for him when he arrives...I looked at one today that had the same person shown as the sender and the addressee, just different addresses - sender in the US, addressee in Brazil. Would be fun to 'race' a cover to a foreign destination!
I wonder if your cover was hand-carried to Bombay for that cancellation. Or maybe it was sent as an enclosure to Bombay for cancellation.
And, another observation: the cover kind of harkens the more modern innovation of joint issues, of which there are many in the modern era. The first one I remember collecting was the Swedish-American US issue, with its companion, issued by Sweden. I'm sure there are many, many more issued before, and since.

Hi Paul- I'm thinking the cover was philatelic in nature. Maybe a dealer did a dozen, sent them to a contact in India who applied the stamp and had them cancelled. All I know is that I jump for joy when I find something this interesting versus the same old boring Artcraft or Artmaster cachets!
And I even noticed that the placard for the 4 cent value has the wrong first day shown! I will be replacing it shortly... should be the same date as the 8 cent stamp!
I got a rather large box of misc covers in the mail today. Of course I tore through it looking for treasure like any of us would. And I found this cool Ghandi FDC. Note that I didn't have any FDCs for this issue, and it would've been nice enough if it simply had both stamps on one cover... BUT... having the stamp and cancel from India is truly over the top. It means I only need one cover for the issue. Pages complete!
