The Wikipedia page is known to me, and has proven useful in many respects. But it does not help much in this case - the postmark suggests a place in the state of Virginia (but which one?) while the ZIP code belongs to Washington, DC. A more specific location of the postal facility, ideally down to the 5-figure ZIP or the town would be desirable.

try this list... according to this Northern is located in Merrifield VA
But this is current information. The question may be where was this sorting center located back in 1986. There have been big upgrades and consolidations since then.

Thank you, that could well be the place. Had a look at the streetview, the architecture looks like it could have been built in the 1980s, hence I will tentatively enter this location in the database, but confirmation would be nice. Any North Virginians out there?

In order to complete a record in the philastempel.de database, I should like to know at which mail facility the postmark in the attached picture was applied, and what its address is/was.
