Guadeloupe SG-202 Sc-C1 issued 1945. The first airmail for the French Colony. Through a referendum in 2003, Saint-Martin and Saint Barthélemy voted to separate from the administrative jurisdiction of Guadeloupe.
Guadeloupe SG81 Sc-B1 issued 1915. The 1st semi-postal for the island. In the 1814 Treaty of Paris, Sweden ceded Guadeloupe to France, giving rise to the Guadeloupe Fund. In 1815, the Treaty of Vienna acknowledged French control of Guadeloupe.
From my Collection: this was the first stamp from Mexico with the value of "1 peso"" issued in 1864, very few were used with Overprint from SALTILLO and/or MONTERREY; Most are without Overprint. The value of "1 Peso" It was printed again but in 1888 with the series Medallions of Hidalgo.
Guatemala Sc/SG 1 issued March 1, 1871. Printed at the Government Mint, Paris. The territory of modern Guatemala once formed the core of the Mayan civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica.
Guatemala Sc C1/SG 239 issued 1929. The first airmail for the Central American country. Most of the Central American countries were prolific issues of airmail stamps.
Guatemala Sc RA1/SG 158 issued in 1919. An obligatory tax on letters to rebuild the main post office. A major earthquake in 1917 destroyed much of Guatemala City's buildings and infrastructure.
Christmas Island Sc/SG 1-10 issued issued 15th October 1958. #ChristmasIsland became an Australian territory in October 1958. Christmas Island is in the Indian Ocean, around 600 miles south of Singapore.

Haiti Sc/SG #1 issued July 1, 1881. The western side of the island of Hispaniola (the larger eastern side being the Dominican Republic) is in the Caribbean Greater Antillean archipelago.
German State - Hamburg Sc/SG #1 issued January 1, 1859. Designed by C.G. Hencke, engraved by J.F.R. Ziesenist, printed by T.G. Meissner, Hamburg. Hamburg was an important shipping center in the 1800s.
Hanover SG 1/Sc 1 issued 1st December 1850. The first issue distinguishes itself by having red gum (in mint condition...). The reason for the colored gum was so the printer would know which side of the paper to print on! (from First Issues Collectors Club)

Hawaii Sc/SG #1 issued October 1, 1851. The Dawson cover is the most valuable of all Missionary items. It was sent to New York City bearing the only known use of the 2-cent value on cover, a 5-cent value and two 3-cent US stamps. (First Issues Collectors Club)

Hawaii - Republic Sc Sc74 SG77 issued 1894. After the US refused to annex Hawaii after the queen was deposed, a republic was formed in 1894.
Hawaii Territory Sc 80 issued 1899. After the annexation of Hawaii by the US July 7, 1898, the US reissued stamps in UPU colors in 1899 before transitioning to US stamps in 1900.
Heligoland SG 1/Sc 1 issued March 1, 1867. An island in the North Sea, previously owned by Denmark, occupied by Britain since the Napoleonic Wars and ceded to Germany in 1890.
Hong Kong Sc/SG #1 issued 8th December 1862. The simple design of Queen Victoria in profile, with English and Chinese in the horizontal and vertical panels respectively, continued (with watermark and color changes) through to 1903.
Hong Kong SG583 Sc-B1 issued 1988. The first semi-postal supported the Community Chest of Hong Kong.
Hong Kong SG-D1 Sc-J1 issued 1923. The first postage due did not come until 1923. British control of Hong Kong reverted to China in 1997.
Honduras Sc/SG #1 issued 1866. Honduras gained independence from Spain in 1821 and was a part of the First Mexican Empire until 1823, when it became part of the United Provinces of Central America.
Honduras SG409 Sc-RA1 issued 1941. The first obligatory postal tax benefited the Red Cross. Honduras joined the Allied Nations after Pearl Harbor, on 8 December 1941.
Honduras SG-O56 Sc-O1 issued in 1890. The first issue of Official stamps. Since independence, nearly 300 small internal rebellions and civil wars have occurred in the country, including some changes in régime.
Hungary Sc #1/SG #2 issued May 1, 1871. Prior to WW1, Hungary was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Austrian stamps were first issued in 1850, Austro-Hungarian in 1867 and both were used in Hungary.
Hungary SG271 Sc-C1 issued in 1918. The first airmail issue of Hungary was an overprint on a postal issue. Austria-Hungary collapsed after World War I, and the subsequent Treaty of Trianon established Hungary's current borders.
Hungary SG136 Sc-B1 issued 1913. The first semi-postal provided for Flood Relief. The name "Magyar", which refers to the people of the country, more accurately reflects the name of the country in other languages such as Turkish.
Hungary Sc O1/SG O428 issued in 1921 as the 1st official. Following WW I, Hungary underwent a period of profound political upheaval, beginning with the Aster Revolution in 1918, which brought the social-democratic Mihály Károlyi to power as prime minister.

Iceland Sc/SG #1 issued January 1, 1873. Designed and engraved by Phillip C. Batz. Printed in typography by H. H. Thiele, Copenhagen. Watermark small crown. These stamps were valid until July 31, 1876. Favor (CTO) and fake cancels abound.
Iceland SG156/Sc C1 issued in 1928 as the 1st airmail. Independence took the form of the Danish–Icelandic Act of Union in 1918, with the establishment of the Kingdom of Iceland, sharing through a personal union the incumbent monarch of Denmark.
Iceland SG201 Sc-B1 semi-postal issued in 1933 to benefit shipwreck and rescue. During the occupation of Denmark in World War II, Iceland voted overwhelmingly to become a republic in 1944, thus ending the remaining formal ties with Denmark.
India Sc/SG#2 1/2 blue issued October 1, 1854. The original first issue from April 1, 1854 was a 1/2 anna red was never issued. Only 360 copies remain.
India CEF Sc M1/SG C1 issued in 1900. India participated in the opposition to the Boxer Rising in 1900 and issued stamps overprinted CEF (China Expeditionary Force) for use by their troops.
Indo-China Sc1/SG2 issued 8th January 1889. The French conquered the area in late C19th and named it Indochina in 1888, covering the colonies & protectorates of Cochin-China, Annam & Tongking (Vietnam), Cambodia, Laos (1893), and Kouang-Tcheou (1900).
Indo-China SG1/Sc2 issued 8th January 1889. Scott lists the black surcharge first and dates it as 8th January, then the black surcharges and dates them 10th January. Gibbons reverses this: red first on 8th, black on 10th.
Indo-China SG197 Sc-C1 first airmail from 1933. The area comprises the French possessions on the Cambodian peninsula. It was occupied by the Japanese in WW2, but French rule was reinstated after Japan surrendered.
Indo-China SG77 Sc-B1 issued 1914. The first charity (semi-postal) stamp issued for the French colony. An overprint on a regular issue.
Indore Sc 1/SG 2 issued 6th January 1886. The stamps consisted of ¼ Anna of various shades of mauve. They were lithographed, gummed and perforate 14 ½ – 15. They were printed on thick white paper, thin white paper, or yellowish paper.
Indore (also referred to as Holkar) was a Princely state in the Indore Agency in Central India (presently part of the Madhya Pradesh State).
Ionian Islands Sc/SG #1 issued 15th May 1859. Listed as a British Colony in this era, the Ionian Islands offer a meager entry with 3 stamps issued on 15th May 1859. The islands were ceded to Greece in 1864.
Anguilla SG 1-16 issued 1967 (Sept.) ½c. to $5 set of sixteen. Anguilla withdrew unilaterally from St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla in 1967. From the Spink and Son Perry Goldberg auction in January 2024. Hammer Price 22,000 GBP. Pricey for a 1967 set.

Canada Sc/SG 1 issued 1851 laid paper. Despite the notoriety of the 12d black, the 3d red is far rarer unused with no more than 20 unused examples believed to exist. From the Spink auction of the Perry Goldberg collection. Hammer price £35,000.

Iran (Persia) Sc/SG #1 issued in 1868. Printed in blocks of four with colors and on paper bought in the Bazaar. The stamps therefore vary tremendously in appearance. No stamps are known to be postmarked, but pen cancellations exist.

Jamaica's First Charity Stamp issued in 1923 SG104 Sc-B1. The added value on the stamp benefited Child Welfare. During the 19th century, Jamaica was populated with freed African slaves.
Japan Sc/SG #1 issued April 20, 1871. The stamps were printed using two plates for the Dragon and one plate for each value. Each plate is made up of 40 slightly different, individually engraved, images. Printed by Matsuda, Kyoto.
Japan Sc B1 was issued in 1937 to benefit the Aerodrome Fund. The 1930s saw a gradual increase in Japan’s industrial and military power. The country’s colonial ambitions swelled as it gained confidence as the self-appointed leader of Asia.
Manchukuo Sc/SG #1 issued July 26, 1932. After the Russo-Japanese War, Japan took over the lease of Port Arthur and Dairen. In 1931 the troops seized the whole of Manchuria and declared it independent as Manchukuo in 1932.
Chinese Treaty Port - Kewkiang #1 issued June 1, 1894. The city became an open treaty port in 1862, and an independent Kewkiang Local Post was established on June 1, 1894. Between 1894 and 1896, Kewkiang issued stamps for use within the city.
Korea Sc/SG #1. The 1st stamp was issued November 18, 1884 and in December of that year there was an attempted revolt during which the Post Office at
Seoul was burned down and the Minister of Posts was killed: stamps were not used again until 1895.
Labuan Sc/SG #1 issued 1st May 1879. Labuan is an island off the north coast of Borneo. It was ceded to GB by the Sultan of Brunei in December 1846. It issued its own stamps from 1879 until 1904, but in 1906 was incorporated with Straight Settlements.

Greece occupied Aegean Islands Lemnos (Limnos) SG1 Sc-N16 issued 1912. Greece occupied some Aegean Islands & parts of western Turkey, the territories being renamed New Greece. Gibbons regards these as occupation issues, Scott as Offices Abroad.
Lero SG3E Sc1 issued 1912. The islands declared their independence from Turkey in 1912, only to be invaded by Italy in May as part of the Turco-Italian War. Italy retained control following the Graeco-Italian Agreement of August 1920.
Grenada Sc #1/SG #2 issued 3rd June 1861. Gibbons lists the blue-green issues as #1 with Scott listing it as #1a. Per Gibbons, the blue-green was issued in June 1861 while the green was issued in May 1862.
Grenada Sc528 SG594. Independence was granted on 7 February 1974 under the leadership of Eric Gairy. The new country became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.
Grenada Sc C1/SG 476 the first Airmail issued 1972. From 1958 to 1962, Grenada was part of the Federation of the West Indies. After the federation's collapse, Grenada was granted autonomy over its internal affairs as an Associated State on 3 March 1967.

Grenada Sc MR1/SG 111 issued 1916. The War Tax stamp benefited the costs of the 1st World War.
Griqualand West Sc/SG #1 issued 1st September 1874. A former British colony that is now part of South Africa. The first stamp was the sc17, SG24a of Cape of Good Hope, surcharged in red manuscript by the Kimberley postmaster.
Guadeloupe Sc #1/SG #6 issued 28th February 1884. Guadeloupe is in the West Indies and was discovered by Columbus. Prior to the 1884 issue, Guadeloupe used French stamps from 1851-53 and then general French colonies issues from 1859.
Guadeloupe Sc-J1 SG-D2 issued 1876. In 1876-79, Guadeloupe issued a series of its own postage due labels, the 25c Sc-J1 SG-D2 being the first.

Japan Sc/SG #1 issued April 20, 1871. Imperforate, native laid paper, no watermark, engraved. Issued without gum. Denomination printed in black. Printed by Matsuda, Kyoto. Gibbons distinguishes between several color and/or printing varieties.

Jhalawar Sc/SG #1 issued in 1887. Jhalawar was a Princely state in the Rajputana Agency located in the Hadoti region. The stamps were issued from 1886-1890, during the reign of Maharaj Rana Zalim Singh, who governed from 1876-1896.
Jhind Convention State Sc #33/SG #1 issued July 1, 1885. Jhind, as did Faridkot, issued stamps as both a Feudatory and a Convention state. The Feudatory period was 1874 to 1885 and the Convention 1885 to 1943.
Johore Sc/SG #1 issued 1st July 1876. The first issue is a handstamped Straights Settlements definitive (Sc 10/SG 11). Johore is at the south of the Malay peninsula.
Johore Japanese Occupation Sc-NJ1 SG-JD1A issued in 1942. During WW2, Johore's capital, Johor FIOIBahru, became the last city on the Malay peninsula to fall to the Japanese. The only occupation stamps listed by Scott specifically for Johore are post due labels
Johore - Federation of Malaya Sc130 SG133 issued 1949. Johore joined the Federation of Malaya in February 1948. Each state issued stamps.
Malaysia - Johore Sc169 SG166 issued in 1965. Johore joined Malaysia in 1963. It had its own stamps within Malaysia from 1965 until 1986.
Jammu & Kashmir Sc1 SG1 issued March 23, 1866. The combined state of Jammu & Kashmir was a princely state in the Kashmir Residency in the north of India. The first issue was, during the reign of Maharaja Ranbir Singh who ruled from 1857 – 1885.
Kewkiang Sc/SG #1 issued June 1, 1894 for the Chinese Treaty Port. Kiukiang, also known as Kewkiang, is a port city on the south shore of the Yangtze River in the Jiangxi Province of China. The city became an open treaty port in 1862.
Korea Sc/SG #1 issued 18th November 1884. The first stamp was issued in November 1884 and in the December of that year there was an attempted revolt during which the Post Office at Seoul was burned, and the Minister of Posts was killed.
Japanese offices in Korea Sc/SG #1 issued in 1900. Japanese POs were opened in 1876 using Japanese stamps but currency fluctuations required the stamps to be overprinted in 1900. The following year the overprinted stamps were withdrawn.
Korea US Military Govt Sc55 SG69 issued 1946. US troops landed in Korea in September 1945 and set up a military govt. of Korea south of the 38th Parallel. The stamps of Japan were used until June 1946.
Republic of Korea Sc 80/SG95 issued in 1948. SG starts the Republic with SG106, but Scott starts the Republic earlier with Sc80, SG95.
Korea - North Korean Occupation SG1 issued 1950. N Korean forces invaded S Korea in June 1950 but were driven out in July by UN forces. Three S Korean stamps were issued in the occupied area, overprinted "Democratic People's Republic of Korea".
India - Custodian Forces in Korea Sc M44 (India listing) SG K1 (Korea listing). Overprinted Indian stamps were issued for use by the Indian contingent of the UN force.
North Korea Sc1 SG-N1 issued 1946. Russia declared war on Japan in August 1945 and invaded northern Korea, occupying territory north of the 38th Parallel. A provisional govt. was set up in February 1946, and Japanese stamps were used until that time.
Korean People's Democratic Republic Sc14 SG-N16 issued 1948. The People's Democratic Republic was declared in September 1948 and Russian troops left by the end of the year.

Liberia SG-O87 Sc-O1 issued 1892. Liberia was the first African republic to proclaim its independence and is Africa's first and oldest modern republic.
Aegean Islands (Dodecanese) Lisso / Lipso Sc 1/SG 3F issued 1912. The islands were occupied by Italy 1912 - 1944 when they were taken over by British forces: they were transferred to Greek administration in 1947.
Lombardy - Venetia - Sc #1 issued June 1, 1850. Austria simultaneously issued its own #1 and issued a stamp for northern Italy, which was then part of the Austrian empire, but was gradually annexed to Italian states over following decades.
German State Lübeck Sc/SG #1 issued 1st January 1859. Printed by H.G. Rahtgens, Lübeck. Lübeck joined the North German Confederation in 1868 ending the state specific issues.
Luxembourg Sc/SG #1 issued 15th September 1852. The first issues feature the French language, German currency and the portrait of a Dutch monarch, a combination perhaps appropriate for Luxembourg's political and economic status at the time.

That's an intriguing stamp design!
The currency represented on the stamps of this set is strange with higher values in silbergroschen but the low values such as this one in centimes rather than kreuzer.
Luxembourg was in a German currency union but traded heavily with France and Belgium so I guess this reflected the coins in circulation at the time.
The portrait is King William III of the Netherlands who was also Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
Luxembourg and the Netherlands were independent of each other at this time although having the same monarch, rather like Scotland and England between 1603 and 1707.
However, William was succeeded by different monarchs because the two countries had different inheritance laws.
Luxembourg was responsible for the world's first stamp booklet and miniature sheet. The booklet was produced in 1895 and contained Sc73, SG155 6c green stamps. Booklet was issued (Gibbons SB1 and SB2), containing 4 panes of 6.
Luxembourg Sc N1/SG 397. An occupation issue was made during the German occupation in 1940. The country was treated as German territory and informally annexed to the adjacent province of Nazi Germany, Gau Moselland.
Luxembourg SG209 Sc-B1 issued in 1921 to benefit the War Monument Fund. The first charity stamp (semi-postal) of Luxembourg.
Luxembourg SG D173/ Sc J1 issued in 1907. The first Post Due from Luxembourg. Luxembourg is one of world's smallest countries, ranking 168th in size of the 194 independent countries of the world; it is about 2,586 square kilometers (998 sq mi).
Macao Sc 1/ SG 10 issued 1st March 1884. The land was rented from China, though Portuguese authority was no recognized until 1887. A postal service was provided via Hong Kong from 1863 to 1884, when the colony issued its own stamps
Macau Sc J1/ SG D184 issued in 1904. On 11 June 1951 Macao became a Portuguese overseas province and in February 1976 it was given autonomy. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999.
Madeira SG169 Sc66 issued in 1980. Madeira became an autonomous region of Portugal in 1976 and stamps were again issued in 1980. The first issue for the autonomous region was an image of the first issue.
Madeira Sc RA1/SG C142 issued 1925. The postal tax same was a common design with the colony name added.
Madeira Sc RAJ1/SG D145 issued 1924. Madeira issued a postal tax postage due in 1924. A rather unusual type of stamp. The postal tax stamp was used with an addition MULTA overprint.
Malta SG #1/ Sc #2 issued in 1860. This Maltese stamp was the only value for 25 years and was only introduced in 1860 because the internal letter rate was reduced to one half-penny and there was no British stamp available for use in Malta.
Malta SG173 Sc-C1 issued in 1928. The first airmail issue for Malta. In 1814, as part of the Treaty of Paris, Malta officially became a part of the British Empire and was used as a shipping way-station and fleet headquarters.
Malta SG-D1 Sc-J1 issued 1925. Before WW2, Valletta was the location of the Royal Navy's Mediterranean fleet headquarters; however, the command was moved to Alexandria, Egypt, in 1937 out of fear that it was too susceptible to air attacks from Europe.
Manchukuo Sc/SG #1 issued 26th July 1932. After the Russo-Japanese War, #Japan took over the lease of Port Arthur and Dairen from #Russia. In 1931 the troops seized the whole of Manchuria and declared it independent as Manchukuo in 1932.
Manchuria Sc/SG #1 issued 18th March 1927. SG cites financial problems as the reason for the separate local issue, the local currency losing value against standard silver coinage.
Martinique Sc/SG #1 issued July 18, 1886. Was owned by the French Antilles Co, used French stamps, then French colonies stamps, then issued surcharged Fr Cols stamps, then dedicated Martinique stamps, then from 1947, regular French stamps.
Martinique Sc C1/SG 222 issued 1945. A part of the French West Indies (Antilles), Martinique is an overseas department and region and a single territorial collectivity of the French Republic.
Mauritius Sc/SG #1 issued September 21, 1847. There were approximately 500 issued with 2 remaining unused copies and 12 used copies.

The Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz Sc 1/ SG 2 issued 1st October 1864. The stamps were withdawn at the end of 1867 when Mecklenburg-Strelitz joined the North German Confederation.

Modena Sc/SG 1 issued September 1852. Modena’s June first issue was the 10 centesimi black on rose, SG2, Sc3, the 5c SG1 Sc1 not being released until September. An example where #1 is not the first stamp.
Romania (Moldavia) Sc 1/SG 1 issued 1858. Stamps for the principality of Moldavia (then under Turkish suzerainty) were issued in July 1858 (Julian calendar). In 1861 the Principality of Rumania was created with the addition of Walachia.
Moldavia-Wallachia Sc 11/SG 23 issued 1862. Moldavia and the principality of Walachia were given independence, but both elected the same leader (Colonel Alexandru Cuza), leading to their union in 1861 as the Principality of Rumania.
Romania Sc22 SG45 issued 1865. Stamps were issued for Moldavia (1858), the combined principalities of Moldavia & Walachia (1862) and for Rumania (1865). Colonel Alexandru Cuza, by then a prince, is shown on the 1865 stamp.
Romania Sc C1/SG 1099 issued 1928. Following the abolishment of the 1923 constitution by King Carol II in 1938, the Kingdom of Romania became an absolute monarchy, only to become a military dictatorship under Ion Antonescu in 1940.
Russia Sc/SG #1 issued January 1, 1858. On November 12, 1857, The Tsar signed giving approval for the design of the first stamps. The French literature and Scotts list the printing date of 10 December 1857. The German use 23 December 1857.
Russian Socialist Federal Soviet Republic (1918) Sc149 SG187 issued in 1918. An independent federal socialist state from 1917 to 1922, and afterwards the largest and most populous constituent republic of the Soviet Union.
Russia Sc242 SG325 issued in 1923. This was the first USSR stamp. Scott continued the Russia listing for the USSR and continued the list when as the USSR dissolved.
Russia Sc-N1 / Germany SG1 issued 1916. Scott previously listed the WW1 Postgebeit Ob. Ost overprint German occupation stamps under Lithuania, noting that they were used more widely than just Lithuania.
Russia Sc B1/SG 81 issued 1905. Russia's first charity stamp issued for the War Orphans Fund (Russo-Japanese War). The Russo-Japanese War was fought during 1904 and 1905 over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and the Korean Empire.
St. Helena Sc/SG #1 issued 1st January 1856. Printed by Perkins Bacon, London. St. Helena is a small island in the South Atlantic, now part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.
St. Christopher (St. Kitts) Sc/SG #1 issued 1st April 1870. St. Christopher used British stamps (and an A12 obliterator) from 1858 until 1860, used a handstamp for 10 years then, in 1870 issued 1d (inland) and 6d (to Britain) stamps.
St. Helena SG87 Sc-MR1 War Tax surcharge on SG73 issued 1916. St. Helena was an vital port for shipping between Europe and South Africa until the Suez Canal opened in 1869.
St. Lucia Sc/SG #1 issued 18th December 1860. To be thrifty Perkins Bacon used one plate for the production of all three denominations required for the 1st issue. The values being indicated by the different colors used - red (1d), blue (4d) and green (6d).
St. Lucia Sc C1/SG 240 issued in 1967. The first airmail issue recognized the independence of St. Lucia.
St. Lucia Sc J1/SG D1 issued in 1930. The first post due is a typeset label.
St. Thomas & Prince Islands Sc/SG #1 issued 1869. Two islands in the Gulf of Guinea, 125 miles off the coast of West Africa. The Islands produced some attractive stamps in past times, but since the 1960s they have entered the wallpaper market.

Guadeloupe SG-202 Sc-C1 issued 1945. The first airmail for the French Colony. Through a referendum in 2003, Saint-Martin and Saint Barthélemy voted to separate from the administrative jurisdiction of Guadeloupe.

Guadeloupe SG81 Sc-B1 issued 1915. The 1st semi-postal for the island. In the 1814 Treaty of Paris, Sweden ceded Guadeloupe to France, giving rise to the Guadeloupe Fund. In 1815, the Treaty of Vienna acknowledged French control of Guadeloupe.

From my Collection: this was the first stamp from Mexico with the value of "1 peso"" issued in 1864, very few were used with Overprint from SALTILLO and/or MONTERREY; Most are without Overprint. The value of "1 Peso" It was printed again but in 1888 with the series Medallions of Hidalgo.

Indore Sc 1/SG 2 issued 6th January 1886. The stamps consisted of ¼ Anna of various shades of mauve. They were lithographed, gummed and perforate 14 ½ – 15. They were printed on thick white paper, thin white paper, or yellowish paper.
Indore (also referred to as Holkar) was a Princely state in the Indore Agency in Central India (presently part of the Madhya Pradesh State).

Ionian Islands Sc/SG #1 issued 15th May 1859. Listed as a British Colony in this era, the Ionian Islands offer a meager entry with 3 stamps issued on 15th May 1859. The islands were ceded to Greece in 1864.

Jamaica's First Charity Stamp issued in 1923 SG104 Sc-B1. The added value on the stamp benefited Child Welfare. During the 19th century, Jamaica was populated with freed African slaves.

Japan Sc/SG #1 issued April 20, 1871. The stamps were printed using two plates for the Dragon and one plate for each value. Each plate is made up of 40 slightly different, individually engraved, images. Printed by Matsuda, Kyoto.

Chinese Treaty Port - Kewkiang #1 issued June 1, 1894. The city became an open treaty port in 1862, and an independent Kewkiang Local Post was established on June 1, 1894. Between 1894 and 1896, Kewkiang issued stamps for use within the city.

Korea Sc/SG #1. The 1st stamp was issued November 18, 1884 and in December of that year there was an attempted revolt during which the Post Office at

Greece occupied Aegean Islands Lemnos (Limnos) SG1 Sc-N16 issued 1912. Greece occupied some Aegean Islands & parts of western Turkey, the territories being renamed New Greece. Gibbons regards these as occupation issues, Scott as Offices Abroad.

Lero SG3E Sc1 issued 1912. The islands declared their independence from Turkey in 1912, only to be invaded by Italy in May as part of the Turco-Italian War. Italy retained control following the Graeco-Italian Agreement of August 1920.

Grenada Sc #1/SG #2 issued 3rd June 1861. Gibbons lists the blue-green issues as #1 with Scott listing it as #1a. Per Gibbons, the blue-green was issued in June 1861 while the green was issued in May 1862.

Grenada Sc528 SG594. Independence was granted on 7 February 1974 under the leadership of Eric Gairy. The new country became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.

Grenada Sc C1/SG 476 the first Airmail issued 1972. From 1958 to 1962, Grenada was part of the Federation of the West Indies. After the federation's collapse, Grenada was granted autonomy over its internal affairs as an Associated State on 3 March 1967.

Griqualand West Sc/SG #1 issued 1st September 1874. A former British colony that is now part of South Africa. The first stamp was the sc17, SG24a of Cape of Good Hope, surcharged in red manuscript by the Kimberley postmaster.

Guadeloupe Sc #1/SG #6 issued 28th February 1884. Guadeloupe is in the West Indies and was discovered by Columbus. Prior to the 1884 issue, Guadeloupe used French stamps from 1851-53 and then general French colonies issues from 1859.

Jhalawar Sc/SG #1 issued in 1887. Jhalawar was a Princely state in the Rajputana Agency located in the Hadoti region. The stamps were issued from 1886-1890, during the reign of Maharaj Rana Zalim Singh, who governed from 1876-1896.

Jhind Convention State Sc #33/SG #1 issued July 1, 1885. Jhind, as did Faridkot, issued stamps as both a Feudatory and a Convention state. The Feudatory period was 1874 to 1885 and the Convention 1885 to 1943.

Johore Sc/SG #1 issued 1st July 1876. The first issue is a handstamped Straights Settlements definitive (Sc 10/SG 11). Johore is at the south of the Malay peninsula.

Johore Japanese Occupation Sc-NJ1 SG-JD1A issued in 1942. During WW2, Johore's capital, Johor FIOIBahru, became the last city on the Malay peninsula to fall to the Japanese. The only occupation stamps listed by Scott specifically for Johore are post due labels

Johore - Federation of Malaya Sc130 SG133 issued 1949. Johore joined the Federation of Malaya in February 1948. Each state issued stamps.

Malaysia - Johore Sc169 SG166 issued in 1965. Johore joined Malaysia in 1963. It had its own stamps within Malaysia from 1965 until 1986.

Jammu & Kashmir Sc1 SG1 issued March 23, 1866. The combined state of Jammu & Kashmir was a princely state in the Kashmir Residency in the north of India. The first issue was, during the reign of Maharaja Ranbir Singh who ruled from 1857 – 1885.

Kewkiang Sc/SG #1 issued June 1, 1894 for the Chinese Treaty Port. Kiukiang, also known as Kewkiang, is a port city on the south shore of the Yangtze River in the Jiangxi Province of China. The city became an open treaty port in 1862.

Japanese offices in Korea Sc/SG #1 issued in 1900. Japanese POs were opened in 1876 using Japanese stamps but currency fluctuations required the stamps to be overprinted in 1900. The following year the overprinted stamps were withdrawn.

Korea US Military Govt Sc55 SG69 issued 1946. US troops landed in Korea in September 1945 and set up a military govt. of Korea south of the 38th Parallel. The stamps of Japan were used until June 1946.

Korea - North Korean Occupation SG1 issued 1950. N Korean forces invaded S Korea in June 1950 but were driven out in July by UN forces. Three S Korean stamps were issued in the occupied area, overprinted "Democratic People's Republic of Korea".

North Korea Sc1 SG-N1 issued 1946. Russia declared war on Japan in August 1945 and invaded northern Korea, occupying territory north of the 38th Parallel. A provisional govt. was set up in February 1946, and Japanese stamps were used until that time.

Korean People's Democratic Republic Sc14 SG-N16 issued 1948. The People's Democratic Republic was declared in September 1948 and Russian troops left by the end of the year.

Luxembourg Sc/SG #1 issued 15th September 1852. The first issues feature the French language, German currency and the portrait of a Dutch monarch, a combination perhaps appropriate for Luxembourg's political and economic status at the time.

That's an intriguing stamp design!
The currency represented on the stamps of this set is strange with higher values in silbergroschen but the low values such as this one in centimes rather than kreuzer.
Luxembourg was in a German currency union but traded heavily with France and Belgium so I guess this reflected the coins in circulation at the time.
The portrait is King William III of the Netherlands who was also Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
Luxembourg and the Netherlands were independent of each other at this time although having the same monarch, rather like Scotland and England between 1603 and 1707.
However, William was succeeded by different monarchs because the two countries had different inheritance laws.

Luxembourg was responsible for the world's first stamp booklet and miniature sheet. The booklet was produced in 1895 and contained Sc73, SG155 6c green stamps. Booklet was issued (Gibbons SB1 and SB2), containing 4 panes of 6.

Macau Sc J1/ SG D184 issued in 1904. On 11 June 1951 Macao became a Portuguese overseas province and in February 1976 it was given autonomy. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999.

Madeira Sc RAJ1/SG D145 issued 1924. Madeira issued a postal tax postage due in 1924. A rather unusual type of stamp. The postal tax stamp was used with an addition MULTA overprint.

Malta SG #1/ Sc #2 issued in 1860. This Maltese stamp was the only value for 25 years and was only introduced in 1860 because the internal letter rate was reduced to one half-penny and there was no British stamp available for use in Malta.

Malta SG173 Sc-C1 issued in 1928. The first airmail issue for Malta. In 1814, as part of the Treaty of Paris, Malta officially became a part of the British Empire and was used as a shipping way-station and fleet headquarters.

Malta SG-D1 Sc-J1 issued 1925. Before WW2, Valletta was the location of the Royal Navy's Mediterranean fleet headquarters; however, the command was moved to Alexandria, Egypt, in 1937 out of fear that it was too susceptible to air attacks from Europe.

Romania (Moldavia) Sc 1/SG 1 issued 1858. Stamps for the principality of Moldavia (then under Turkish suzerainty) were issued in July 1858 (Julian calendar). In 1861 the Principality of Rumania was created with the addition of Walachia.
