While looking into why they are called Banknotes I came across this site which seems at first glance to be very well organised and full of detail. No doubt many of you have already found and used the site but for newbies, such as myself, to American varieties it will prove invaluable.
http://www.1847usa.com/index.htm

It covers various years of USA stamps with illustrations in colour and enlarged.

The following site has a more historical overview of the various printing companies.

re: Banknote identification

Hi Everyone;

I think they are called "bank notes" because they were printed by the same company that printed US Currency; the Continental Bank Note Co., and the American Bank Note Company. The National Bank Note Co. also printed various security paper; stocks, bonds, paper currency and postage stamps. After July 1894 all stamp printing shifted to the US Bureau of Engraving & Printing.
