Absolutely. NG "mint" stamps are generally valued the same as used stamps, and in fact they might have been used but not cancelled. If you're at all like me, you'll regret it if you don't spring for the additional $20, assuming all other things are equal. However, I would want to see an image of the back of the stamps. In my opinion, a heavily hinged stamp might as well be an NG stamp, especially if the old hinge(s) have warped the paper.

An alternative perspective is a focus on the stamp's image, color, engraving, theme, etc., irrespective of gum or not, hinged or not. To many, that is more valuable. The face of the stamp looks absolutely no different. Simply depends on what your objective is in collecting.

Good points from all. MNG may really be used with a cleaned cancel, used with no cancel, mint heavily hinged soaked to remove the hinges, or a stamp stuck by its own glue to an album page or something else that was soaked off. I agree that the centering and color from the front would impact my choice, but I would be mostly concerned about pinholes and thins on either example since I use black background mounts.

Thanks Gentleman, i am looking in that direction. So many years ago before computer printed pages we had a fellow Larry in our stamp club. I guess Larry was a bit of an artist as he used to make his own beautiful illustrated pages . Larry worked as a sort of carpenter/handyman and he had a family so had little money to spend on stamps but he would bring in attractive collections to show. I did not really understand it then..but i do now..Larry would say "i don't care what the back of the stamp looks like" ! He did the best he could.

The main question is: how often do you look at the back of the stamp once they are in your album?

If you are an amateur philatelist (like me), practically never again...

There are only two drawbacks:

a) if you will expose the stamps on a show, certainly the jury will prefer the MNH;

b) when you´ll try to sell the stamps you´ll get less for them, as when you bought them. But, on the other hand, dealers will offer you about $2 or $4, which makes the whole issue irrelevant!

Some folks just don't understand why we wouldn't want to sell. My neighbor asked me if I was going to sell my newest treasure and I said "no way! I'll be able to complete my collector now!" She looked at me like I was nuts and said "but it is just a piece of paper!". Sigh - thank goodness I can talk to similar "nuts" here on Stamporama who "get it".

Next time your neighbor books a vacation ask her if she is going to sell it instead of taking it. If she decides to take the vacation, ask her how much she could get for it after she gets back. Zero? Wow. Although you MIGHT not be able to quickly get your money back on your recent stamp purchase, you would most likely be able to get MOST of it back with little difficulty, and given time you may actually MAKE money! Try THAT with a vacation (or purse, or jewelry, or clothing, or home decor).
