The mount size is based on millimeters and it's based on the size of the stamp. I used #25 mount strips for my 1901 Pan Am stamps. You have to cut them to size. There isn't a pre-cut that I know of for that one.

Carabop if you call Mystic Stamp Co. and give them the Scott Number they will match you up with the correct sizes on any stamps you choose to mount. Phone 1-800-433-7811 Just have the Scott number or numbers handy when you call.
Thank you TinMan
In 2012, there was an extensive Stamporama discussion about mounts, headed "Stamp mounts -- recommendations?" Rather than repeat myself, here is the Stamporama link.

I know this particular thread is a couple years old but my question/comment I thikn should fit here.
I am using stamp mounts (backsplit is my favourite) for a very specific portion of my collection.
My problem is finding mount sizes that cover the all stamps for that portion. There are sizes for most of the stamps, especially for the smaller sizes up to about 70mm but after that it just almost seems more hit and miss.
I do sometimes put the stamp sideways in some of my mounts and that takes care of some of the issues
In my last order though I have had to go to top opening mounts for some sizes. But even there often the sizes I need are not available.
I often wonder a couple things
1. Why is there a marked disparity between backsplit and top opening sizes (part 2 of the same question) why not make them all the same sizes?
2. Why not make a greater range of sizes to cover stamps from all over the world. Especially in the larger sizes from about 80mm on up?
OR... am I the only one that has wondered about these things?
Not sure where you are purchasing them but Arpin have a wide variety including larger sizes. Try here, https://www.arpinphilately.com/itm/protective-stamp-mounts-uni-safe-g-center-opening-black
I'm sure Subway also sell the larger sizes but have not checked.
Sheepshanks: thank you for taking the time to respond
I buy mainly from FVH http://www.fvhstamps.com/ in Vancouver because he has Unisafe as well as Lighthouse and Hawid mounts.
I have also purchased Showgard in the past. With the exchange rates i prefer to purchase in Canada
I find that most of the companies that produce/sell mounts pretty much cover the same 'basic' sizes.
I would be interesting to know how they came to those sizes

Rene, you may want to check out this thread and in particular the last post from Don.

Sheepshank: Thank you very much.... I had read through another thread on mounts but I missed this one. This is very helpful.
I appreciate the time you have spent for me on this

No worries, I buy mine in bulk, unwrapped, from a UK supplier and get them to send with any stamps I buy.
Like Charlie I also hinge many of my stamps, especially the used ones and reserve mounts for the mint or "error" ones.
I have always been attracted to Eastern European stamps... no rhyme or reason... just liked them... About 5 years ago I decided to focus in on Bulgaria. I have since them purchased years sets mnh from 1936... up to and including 2008, so far. After checking out a few different sources for stamps, I found a dealer in Sofia Bulgaria that I like and use all the time now.
I have also been making my own album. Because of this project I decided to use mounts.
It has a been a bit of a labour of love.
Another benefit has been a friendship I have developed with my dealer in Bulgaria. We not only deal in stamps...(I often send him some new Canadian souvenir sheets... just because) but we share recipes and just friendly chatter about family and weather etc in our countries.
Most of my other stamps are in stock books, but I am not adverse to using hinges for used stamps.
So that is my story of the stamp mounts

Out of interest who is your supplier - I purchase mine form a distributor in Australia but they seem pretty expensive and I would like to shop around.

Richmond
Hi, Richmond, I get mine from here
https://www.greatbritainstamps.net/hawid-mounts-bulk-buy-100-strips/cat_345.html
They also sell the split back style.
Afternoon Sheepshanks,
Had a look these are far cheaper than the Lighthouse mounts I buy in Australia - where I pay AUD15.95AUD (just increased to AUD18.95) for 25 clear strips. Seems to be good to be true!
Is the size quoted for Hawid similar to say Lighthouse where something listed as 210 x 21 is actually 210mm x 25mm actual mount size?
Assuming you are located O/S UK what delivery time do you expect?
Regards
Richmond
Morning Richmond, have just measured a 24mm. Length 217, Height, external, 28mm, internal around 26mm. If I recall correctly the size to buy is the actual stamp height. The allowance for top and bottom margins being built into the sizing.
I imagine that the various manufacturers would all work on a comparable basis but do not have other brands to compare
Vic
edit. Sorry just realised that I did not answer your other question. Takes around 10-14 working days for delivery. I'm in Manitoba, Canada.
I have one stamp from the USA 1901 Pan American Issue that I would like to mount in my album but I don't have the right mount size. Being a newbie I have ordered some mounts and I get them and they are not the right size. I guess I am not good at determining what size mount I need. Hopefully one day I will use the ones that are not the right size now. My question is can anyone tell me what mount size I need to order for the USA 1901 Pan American Issue stamps please?
Thank you Carabop
