re: when looking at covers check whats inside !

That's a fascinating cover! My Struggle, of course, is Hitler's book, Mein Kampf. The sender is from the Zenterverlag (Central Publisher) of the NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei), i.e. the Nazis. I wonder if "Herrn Truderung" was involved in the German-American Bund, the American arm of the Nazi party. I googled his name, but came up empty, at least as far as free information goes. He seems to be represented on genealogical web sites.

It's hard to believe that the Nazis themselves weren't able to publish Mein Kampf in English and market it in the U.S., which wouldn't declare war for another three years, long after Germany attacked Poland. Hitler didn't believe the Americans would become involved in a European war, and of course believed that even the British might capitulate to his demands.

I'm not on my computer right now but what I did find out was that he was born in Poland and he died in 1977. There's discrepancy as to when he was born 1902 or 1898.

I'll look more when I'm on my computer.

Oh - and he's listed at the sane address above in both 1935 and 1940.

re: when looking at covers check whats inside !

I really enjoy finding covers with letters inside them when going through dollar boxes. When I was at the National Topical Stamp Show in St. Louis in June I found about eight Russian covers with photo and letters requesting to become penpals with students in the United States. I'm trying to find some of them now, I think it would be fin for them to finally get that penpal.

This is an example of why I love the dollar cover box, you never know what you are going to find inside the cover. Not only was there a letter but there was also a leaf put in with the letter. If you look at the leaf on the last page you can see the flag cancel impression on it. I did find the letter a bit sad though, a nephew introducing himself to his aunt and uncle and clearly they had never met. Different times...

I always check the contents of covers, and many times it has brought big rewards,
I think my jackpot was this Marilyn Monroe postcard.

Here is another Marilyn Monroe card from same convention, but a different year.
This card does not mention Marilyn Monroe, but other card confirms it. Richaard

Jerredutt3 there was a handwritten letter in English in the letter also..i guess a response to the letter from Germany...here goes...The German Publishing Company forwarded to us your letter of June 6, 1938 so that we might handle your request. We take the liberty to inform you than an English edition has been printed by the Houghton Mifflin Publishing co. in Boston/USA , the book written by the "Fuhrer"under the title My Struggle. the price is $2.50. Should you desire the German Edition please forward us R.M. 6.40 (Reichs Mark)which would also take care of the postage. Yours faithfully, name left blank

As a bit of a monarchist I was pleasantly suprised to have found this in a boxlot I got. Now the envelope was already opened. It is a short note but again interesting in its own right.

The letter is signed by Michael Adeane, Lt. Col, who was the Queen's private secretary for the first twenty years of her reign. It is interesting that he was aide-de-camp to Lord Bessborough and Lord Tweedsmuir who were Governors General of Canada during the depression.

I have yet to track down information on the recipient, however The Canadian Churchman was a publication of the Anglican Church of Canada.

re: when looking at covers check whats inside !

I was given a bunch of covers by a former neighbor when she had to move out of her condo. She loved to travel and had visited Pitcairn Island sometime in the 1940s on one of her many trips. This is a legitimately postally used cover with a personal letter inside from one of the residents of Pitcairn Island. The writer seems to be very happy that they are getting a two-room school built.
