we need to commend Bobby, who has been a tireless enforcer of this rule, as well as the champion of its repeal. it is tough to wear a two-fronted hat with any graciousness, but he's done so.
I also want to remind people that only SOR members can post here; but anyone can read this. I doubt that our site is an attractive target for data miners, but it is visible.

Personally, I don't see the reason to allow this in the posts for the reasons Ningpo pointed out. If you post the actual email address unless you are likely to it get scooped up by spammers; it happened to me before.

People should be aware that posting an email address anywhere on public pages of the internet WILL result in an increase in SPAM to that email address.
Pages are regularly harvested by robot scripts looking for emails to add to databases. There is no defence against this from the webmaster's position. If a person can read it, so can a machine script.
The defence suggested, of replacing the "@" symbol with "(at)" will only have an impact on "stupid" scripts. I could write a half line of code to capture that too, or any other common "replacement" strategy.
If you do post your email address, please don't blame Stamporama or the website for "releasing" it. My address is prominently displayed on the internet, but I use an off-site email spam scrubber that captures at least 100 spam emails a day, so I am not bothered by it.

I think this is not a good move. It is easy to send a message to someone using the message system. The person can then decide if they want to share this address with individuals.
This is going to lead to receiving SPAM by putting the email in the DB.
Those who do put there email on the message board risk getting lots of spam and not being able to stop it. Some emails they will receive can carry virus or gather other information from there computers.
No one says you have to post your email address on the DB. In fact, I will not do so because I get enough spam and phishing expeditions as it is. But if you want to, you can - I still advise against it. We are all adults here and should have the right to do ill advised things as we please.
"...But I think many of us would also enjoy showing how we appreciate the efforts of our Webmaster, Auctioneer and Volunteer Committee by occasionally sending philatelic gifts. So I'm going to ask all of you to please list your collecting interests and especially stress items you're looking for right now."
I imagine this decision was made due to the fact that so many people have put up their email addresses and then as moderator, Bobby has been going back and removing them and asking people to contact each other via the member's message service.
This way, those who wish to put up their emails as contacts on the db (as has happened in the past), will no longer have it removed.
I know there has been some animosity in the past of people who have put up their email addresses on the db and had them removed by moderators over the years. So now, each person has that option, if they wish.
As editor of the Rambler, I know this VC change will be listed in the next edition of our newsletter, however I will still continue my practice of writing in the Rambler that members please contact each other via the SOR messaging system.

Theresa, we do what we do here in SOR because we love our club As John Derry said on another thread - a labour of love
The VC has considered and passed a proposal that email addresses be permitted in posts on the discussion board. Still prohibited are members' addresses and telephone numbers (this is to protect the members from being spammed or targeted by unscrupulous persons with access to the DB).
Feel free henceforth to include your email address in your post. At your discretion you may also include your real name and such general information as country of origin and city in which you dwell.
Thanks,
Bobby
