It would be SUPER FUN to see more comments like this - what are YOU doing stamp wise today? Me - approval orders and perfing and checking micro printing on some recent USA definitives. And laundry in between (the washer wench at work LOL).
Please share - would love to hear what's up with your collection.
I especially enjoy looking at Israeli stamps for their wide range of topics, colors, and designs!
Almost done trimming and counting the lot of Eire stamps donated to the Holocaust Stamps Project by one generous SOR member. So far, 9800 - WOW!!!!- not counting those that were on the outside of the snail-mailed box in which they arrived.
As of end of school in June, 2014, total stood at 3,888,000+ stamps with a goal of 11,000,000, one for every victim of the Holocaust.
Now that I have decided to take a break from listing lots, I have worked on my Canadian collection a couple of days this week, but my 2003 Unitrade didn't cover the newer stamps that have been won in auctions and such, so have ordered a 2014 Unitrade and am waiting for that to arrive. While waiting I had to face reality and do some repair work in the garage, but will be starting on Finland when I get back to stampin', at least until the new catalog gets here.
Mike
Lol .. I feel your pain Mike
What is everyone doing with their stamps today?
Right now I'm using my new 30X loupe to check a few new USA flag definitives. YIKES - tiny tiny stuff! If there are cancels covering the microprinting I toss them in the charity bin. Hope to try out the orange goo remover for the first time today. Wish me luck!
I am sorting my Norwegian stamps, placing them on A5 stock cards that goes into a box that takes 100 of the cards. I've already sorted many of them into glassine envelopes, so most of the work is placing them on the card and making a small note with the catalog number.
Also have 600 Norwegian stamps I haven't looked at yet, that I got for cheap when I bought the A5 stock cards with the box. So if I have time I'll look at them too
Working and inspect this one (second) item that arrived to my stock!
Proper certificate, just to see if all is correct - than, will think what to do with!
Yesterday it was "work" on my Romanian box.. Nothing really above common (one or two slightly more "uncommons", unless some shade issues up the values. I forgot how many shading issues there were on 40's and 50's Romanian stamps! EEP!).
I've got a box of an entire array of Romanian stamps from 1906 to ... something (I'm guessing 1980's, but I'm still only up to Catalog #980'ish. ) that I've been wanting to get paged and put away.
But fortunately, after I'm done, I'll have at least another 1000 glassine envelopes for future storage...
Now if the Czech stamps I won in an auction would hurry up and get to me, I'd be a happy person...
Finished mounting my Belgian Railways and now sorting through my German States. Fun, Fun!
Crunching through early 1960s Danish definitives separating fluorescent vs. non-fluorescent papers. Starting to get a bit bored with it, though.
I seem to be on a roll, I've managed to work through all the German States and have finished up to and including Germanias. After many years I finally bought some 64 page stockbooks so I'm putting them in there as I move along, leaving extra pages where I know there will be more to come as I go through the envelopes that I've not yet sorted. I decided to take a break as I've hit that section directly after the Germanias. I'm thinking of moving into a different stockbook and putting in the officials. That will leave me with a lot less mess to try to work through.
I'm going to enjoy working through the inflation issues, Hindenburgs and the officials. It's going to take some time to actually sort through all my issues so I figured the easiest way was just to put everything of the same kind together in the stockbooks and then I can slowly tackle each section before creating album pages.
I'm actually looking forward to making the album pages for the pre-1949 States and German issues. It will be a lot more traditional and fun than creating the DDR, West German and Berlin - no Commemmoratives!! Per se
Boy, I really was on a roll this weekend. It felt wonderful to work on my stamps again and being able to get some organisation to my pre-1949 Germany is fantastic. I knew it's just a beginning but it is awesome to watch things unfold and see what I have and ultimately be able to figure out what is missing to fill those holes
I am working on this cover today. Lovely cancel.
No idea yet who Mr. Hase was but he lived in a relatively elegant block of flats in London in 1945.
Got so bored without any stamp stuff to work on. Still waiting for our house to sell. Everything is packed away. I finally had to go to the library and get some stamp catalougues. I found a box of stamps that was in a packed box at the top of the pile, and I am working on listing them now. Not many, but at least it's something to do. I'm finally back in the stamp world. It feels good to be normal again. hehehe!
I can't wait to get moved and to be able to have all my stuff out where I can get at it. Fingers crossed that it will be soon.
Currently working through/organizing an accumulation of Malta stamps picking out the odd topical of interest. However, bulk will eventually go to Stamporama approval books as Malta is not one of the countries I collect.

We had a busy day yesterday, so hubby says, "Let's make today a "kickback" day. Why don't you just take it easy and work on your stamps?" OMG I love that man!
My first day of vacation. Spent the morning shredding papers. Just now, I can see the top of my desk a little. Gonna have to sort and file stamps.
That's my kind of vacation!
I spent much of the last two days showing the grand kids the stamps I purchased while on vacation. I am getting anxious to get home so I can start mounting them all, and opening the rest of the accumulated mail.
Tuscany, a messy desk, but not even close to my mess. Sorry, no photo.
Richaard
Richaard, The stamps and desktop was what I found after I filled a laundry basket with all the papers (that I haven't shredded or filed yet) that were on my desk
I'd love to do a poll of stamporama folks to see how many of us are the super clean desk ultra organized neat freaks or the free spirited messy desk pack rat type folks. Is there a way to do a poll here? Me - I'm the neat freak.
I think I'm a neat freak but don't ask my wife. So many stamps, cook books, CDs, LPs, Christmas collectables, Santa Clause and a few more collections to sort. I know where everything is and can put my hands on it if you give me enough time to find it.
Vince
Ps, my desk top is clear but don't look in the drawers.
I'm a desk pack rat. I know where everything is in that shambles, so please don't organize it! My wife is appalled (has been for lo' these 47 years...). Now, my lab bench space at work (before I retired) was immaculate--a place for everything, & everything in its place--because the work I did required precise, repeatable, reproducible results. My desk at work looked like my desk at home. One consultant told me I needed some chaos in my life to offset the high precision work requirements. Hopefully we can all hang on to that caveat when challenged as to the chaos around us.

After several weeks under pressure at work it was fun this morning to spend a few hours this morning on stamps.
Now for the first time ever my Patiala stamps are properly arranged!
I even found time to discover where some postmarks came from.
One small country done, several hundred still needing attention...

Wanted to be working on a lot of used Ceylon/Sri Lanka that I traded for that would be great for my collection but my fellow trader shipped it on Friday. Saturday was to soon and before thinking it was Labor Day today, I was hoping it would arrive today. Foolish me. The way the mails have been - maybe next Monday. So instead, I spent the day reorganizing my 102 card stock for the fall stamp shows. I had three red boxes full of new stock to mix in which should have gone fairly quickly but I found--as usual--a number of my customers feel that if they take stock which starts with number 900 it can go back in the boxes behind any country that has a 899 and it is ok to put them back in backwards, upside down or in any random spot in the box. I expect some of that every year but it has been particularly bad this year. I provide place markers so can not figure out why it is so hard. It is, however, worthwhile to go through the cards every so often as catalog values change so I can update the stock and switch from glassine to 102 cards. First show is the 21st so need to get finished. Had 2 1/2 boxes to mix in and after a whole day only have 2 boxes left. Progress was slow.

Your customers must be shelf stockers in the store where I work.
I finished another box today and discovered Norway is now part of Ireland evidently. But the Ceylon/Sri Lanka stock came in today so now I can work on that part of my collection. I'm retired so every day is stamp day. My grandson came over for awhile tonight and we ate supper on the back porch. I'm not sure why but he does not believe I saw a tiger in the back yard but accepts that I saw a giraffe peaking over the garage. I have older grandchildren and when they were young, I gave each of them a copy of te Scott book "S is for Stamp Collecting" but it is out of print and Scott does not intend to reprint it. If anyone knows where I could find 4 copies in decent condition at a reasonable price, I would appreciate hearing.
Jack Leiby (stampman@mchsi.com)
Are you sure about that title, Jack? The Advanced Book Exchange doesn't have books by that title, and a Google search came up empty, for a book, anyway.
Bob
I could have it wrong. I'm getting old. I'll do some more checking as the grandkids I gave it to last time are now out of college. I may be tilting at windmills as I also bought all of them albums and stamps and none of them are collectors today. In fact, the standing joke is who is going to get stuck with the collection. I thought I would try it again. It may be like watching the same movie over and over and hoping te ending will change.

OK. I spent the morning spending money on SOR. Thank You All! You know, I have noticed a number of long time names missing from the Auction. And just ordered more Vario pages.

Spent another "relaxing" morning in the auction. Big thank you to all whom added some new items. I am working on stamps all day today.

On my second day of working on stamps. Just been going through lots of Hungary, Austria, Afghanistan, and Denmark
It's getting colder and darker day by day so I have been making plans for winter collecting. I was at a bourse over the weekend and picked up a German box lot, which will keep me busy for a long time, plus a couple of hundred British commems and Machins to sort through - my GB collection has nothing much past 1970 at the moment.
I'll be looking for more box lots and stuff to sort through over the next couple of months until the snow sets in...
Geoff
It's just the opposite here, today is the first day of Spring and the weather is quite pleasant it was up around 29° C .All the flowers are bursting into bloom and the veg's are coming on a treat.
We have a big stamp Fair/ Exhibition over three days next weekend Stampex 2014 in Adelaide Oct 10-12th.
I hope to pick up a few nice items for my collections, all being well.
Brian
I'm back to working on stock for next show this weekend. Show on 21st in Peoria, Illinois was a good one and I picked up a nice copy of U.S. no 1 for my collection. I got all of the red boxes and 102 cards straightened out and hardly anyone looked at them. Sold mostly covers and small album page lots. This week I am putting together cigar box lots. I put $125 cat value in a box for $25 and have sold a number of them over the years. At the same time I am finally getting around to working on the Ceylon lot I was waiting for. It came in and has laid on my desk for several weeks now. I'm having some trouble with my vision (double vision for distance) and so can't drive until it clears up so I have been scrambling to find people to drive to the shows. I can see fine if I cover either eye with a patch but get double images with both eyes. I already have an artificial leg and when I came home with the patch, my wife said all I needed was a parrot and I could call my self Pirate Stamps. I will be in Joliet, Illinois on Saturday at the Will County stamp Show so if anyone is in that area, please stop and say hello.

Nice Jack. Sounds fun. Parrot sounds much better idea than the hook that I had envisioned for you.
I'm geographically single this week. The family dinner table has become my stamp collection work space. I make room for meals as needed.
I didn't think to take a photo before I started eating. The asparagus is already gone!

That's a very cool set up Lars. I've been working on stamps myself today, and here is my desk set up currently. The visual presenter allows me to see the stamp detail that I can't see normally with my magnifier. I really like how it gives me the detail I need.
Stan
Hi Everyone;
@ Stan;
What is a visual presenter? What does it do? How many pounds of gold does it cost?
Can it create .jpg files? Is it faster than a scanner?
Never heard of one of those gadgets, but I'm aware of several computer microscopes on the market. Just curious, (and maybe jealous too)!
@ Lars;
The only thing missing in your set-up is a cold flagon of Ale?
Keep on stampin

Been a while since I've been able to devote much of a day to my stamps. Got some nice stamps from an APS Africa sales circuit, and improved my DDR with a couple of mnh year sets that have been lying around for several months. I even started working on a new approval book! No, it's not ready. Not kidding when I say it's been a while. I forgot how to use my scanner!
The center drawer of my desk broke and fell on me, and just missed breaking my right hand. Just got a small bruise. Called in a carpenter, and he said it cannot be repaired, so the million pencils, pens, and general junk is all on my already messy desk. Just the thought of putting the desk top in any order brings tears to my eyes. When, if ever I get it back in shape I will let everyone know, but don't hold your breath. Starting to place some of the things in other drawers, but have to remember where I have put them.
Richaard
Just received a big parcel of Great Britain QV - GVI material. My weekend is officially full!
I needed a "red box" for my Netherlands and colonies duplicates so i did a whole lot of switching things around. I am ALWAYS amazed at what i find !
Back to working on my stamps for a bit. I've put two stock pages into mounts and now it's time to rest.
I really enjoy the rare times I get to work on my stamps.
As a Noob, I had no clue how to start collecting and organizing.
In the past 8 or 9 months, I have accumulated around a 1000 stamps. I buy individual stamps for the family birth years I'm collecting, and put them into their respective albums. I have also purchased several bulk lots (50 to 100 ea.) if the price was right.
I would then dutifully put them into stock pages, and recording the scott number and description into an excel spreadsheet. After sorting the spreadsheet, I realize I no longer had a clue what stamp was where, so I then purchased a Database software and have (one by one) been entering them into the database and moving them to a new stock book that has been organized by decade.
With the help of the database, I will then go through each decade and sort them by year within the decade.
That's what will occupy about 2 hours a day of my time for the next few weeks. Hopefully, not long after that, I'll be done with my physical therapy and can spend another few hours a week working on them.
I have taken your highlighted-auction idea to heart and find it is nice to have something to focus on when battling "The Hoard". Unfortunately a change every week leaves me progressively further behind with a full time job and two teenagers (not to mention a wife) using up my precious stamp time. I just got around to looking for SEAT stuff Wednesday night!
But what I like is that I have gone from deciding Asia wouldn't get more than minimal shelf-space to discovering some countries with beautiful stamps and interesting stories. I put this page together for the first small batch of Laos I found and have a few pages of Indonesia to work on tomorrow. More (hopefully) to come and getting stuff in the sales mill.
This old thread has been an inspiration for me!! I have been feeling lately that there's not much happening in my collections - just some sporadic buys from ebay or delcampe. But reading about the heroic deeds you've been engaged on has prompted me to think again.
I've got very modest collections of France (3rd republic), Sweden (Gustav 5), Denmark (Christian X and Frederick IX), Finland (Independence to currency change), Iceland (the dual kingdom) and Laos (the Kingdom) and a couple of binders of assorted engraved stamps by different engravers. The other 5 stockbooks contain various old remnants and assorted items from short lived bursts of activity when I was starting out on this hobby.
Having read about your enthusiasms, I've resolved to take another lok at the old stuff and I've opened two new areas. One is Latvia (1918 - 1940) - map and banknote paper stamps, leading up to the annexation by USSR (or as Gibbons puts it, "they asked to be included as soviet republics").
Ooops - fat finger!
The other revived area for me is Newfoundland, the first country I ever collected. I have quite a lot of mint stamps from the turn of the century onwards, apart from the v expensive airs. I chose it because it has a beginning and an end, and the stamps are pretty and interesting, and importantly aren't (or in the 1970s weren't) too expensive. I can't resist those dogs in the 1887 issue. And it has the world's only stamp showing little Prince John, epileptic son of King George V, who died in his teens. They kept him out of the limelight, and not many people know he even existed. So I'll revive Newfie, and may even save up the beer money for some of the air mail stamps.
So, first thing to do is to move stuff around to make some vacant space. That'll keep me busy for a good while.
Next project: soaking stamps.
Albums depicted show DAVOs (Great Britain and Australia) & Palo (Australian States), and to where I am today -- mini-binders purchased at Target for $3.99 with pictures of flamingos on the cover. Budget for albums is long gone.
Mini-binders are perfect for FDCs/covers. Using clear mini-page protectors, cut a piece of colored construction paper and insert in protector, then you can place a cover on either side. I sometimes insert mini lined paper behind the page protector to allow the addition of pertinent information, etc.
Cheers!
Eric
Another stamp day - today is a sorting day. I can't wait to dive into some of the stamps I set aside in envelopes. Looks like I've got a lot of work to do with my early Netherlands!!!
Gotta get back to work on my Belgian Railways - found a whole lot more today.
Ahh - such fun. My friend thinks I'm nuts - well, she already knows I'm nuts so that's okay!
Just received a small lot of Israeli stamps

re: Working on stamps today
It's getting colder and darker day by day so I have been making plans for winter collecting. I was at a bourse over the weekend and picked up a German box lot, which will keep me busy for a long time, plus a couple of hundred British commems and Machins to sort through - my GB collection has nothing much past 1970 at the moment.
I'll be looking for more box lots and stuff to sort through over the next couple of months until the snow sets in...

re: Working on stamps today

Nice Jack. Sounds fun. Parrot sounds much better idea than the hook that I had envisioned for you.
re: Working on stamps today
I'm geographically single this week. The family dinner table has become my stamp collection work space. I make room for meals as needed.
I didn't think to take a photo before I started eating. The asparagus is already gone!

That's a very cool set up Lars. I've been working on stamps myself today, and here is my desk set up currently. The visual presenter allows me to see the stamp detail that I can't see normally with my magnifier. I really like how it gives me the detail I need.

Hi Everyone;
@ Stan;
What is a visual presenter? What does it do? How many pounds of gold does it cost?
Can it create .jpg files? Is it faster than a scanner?
Never heard of one of those gadgets, but I'm aware of several computer microscopes on the market. Just curious, (and maybe jealous too)!
@ Lars;
The only thing missing in your set-up is a cold flagon of Ale?
Keep on stampin

re: Working on stamps today
Been a while since I've been able to devote much of a day to my stamps. Got some nice stamps from an APS Africa sales circuit, and improved my DDR with a couple of mnh year sets that have been lying around for several months. I even started working on a new approval book! No, it's not ready. Not kidding when I say it's been a while. I forgot how to use my scanner!
re: Working on stamps today
The center drawer of my desk broke and fell on me, and just missed breaking my right hand. Just got a small bruise. Called in a carpenter, and he said it cannot be repaired, so the million pencils, pens, and general junk is all on my already messy desk. Just the thought of putting the desk top in any order brings tears to my eyes. When, if ever I get it back in shape I will let everyone know, but don't hold your breath. Starting to place some of the things in other drawers, but have to remember where I have put them.

re: Working on stamps today
I needed a "red box" for my Netherlands and colonies duplicates so i did a whole lot of switching things around. I am ALWAYS amazed at what i find !
re: Working on stamps today
Back to working on my stamps for a bit. I've put two stock pages into mounts and now it's time to rest.
I really enjoy the rare times I get to work on my stamps.
re: Working on stamps today
Hopefully, not long after that, I'll be done with my physical therapy and can spend another few hours a week working on them.
re: Working on stamps today
More (hopefully) to come and getting stuff in the sales mill.
re: Working on stamps today
One is Latvia (1918 - 1940) - map and banknote paper stamps, leading up to the annexation by USSR (or as Gibbons puts it, "they asked to be included as soviet republics").
re: Working on stamps today
That'll keep me busy for a good while.
re: Working on stamps today
Next project: soaking stamps.
Albums depicted show DAVOs (Great Britain and Australia) & Palo (Australian States), and to where I am today -- mini-binders purchased at Target for $3.99 with pictures of flamingos on the cover. Budget for albums is long gone.
Mini-binders are perfect for FDCs/covers. Using clear mini-page protectors, cut a piece of colored construction paper and insert in protector, then you can place a cover on either side. I sometimes insert mini lined paper behind the page protector to allow the addition of pertinent information, etc.
Cheers!
Eric
re: Working on stamps today
Another stamp day - today is a sorting day. I can't wait to dive into some of the stamps I set aside in envelopes. Looks like I've got a lot of work to do with my early Netherlands!!!
Gotta get back to work on my Belgian Railways - found a whole lot more today.
Ahh - such fun. My friend thinks I'm nuts - well, she already knows I'm nuts so that's okay!
