Kelly,
Thanks for all the work you have put in on this project. It is a fantastic historical archive and a great new resource for all.
Regards ... Tim
Kelly,
Thank you for all the hard work in bringing this fascinating look into the past of our beloved hobby. Congrats an a job well done and continued success.
Ross
Thanks guys There's a lot more to come. I'm certainly learning a lot about things that I would never have had any interest in before.
Kelly
Outstanding! Way to go Kelly!
Awesome thankyou so much...Cheryl
Thanks Kelly. I cannot imagine how much time that would take. Some of it is very interesting..... Sally
It is definitely A LOT of work but I figure in the end, it's worth it if the information can assist our SOR members.
There is so much information and it takes a lot of time to transcribe things but definitely worth it. I have over 4 dozen Journals in English and French to go through and I'm finding everything so exciting. My goal is to ultimately transcribe all of the major articles from these Journals.
Thank you to everyone for your kind words.
Kelly
Forgive the dumb question, but why transcribe them? Why not just scan them and turn them into PDF files?
Roy
Roy - the Journals as they are, are in pdf and true, anyone could flip through them - ranging in size from 100 to 400 pages, but in reality, I don't think too many people are going to do that.
There are articles written on the same topics from different perspectives - British, American, French, etc but if you don't read every single journal, you'll miss them. Plus not everyone reads French and there are some awesome articles in the French Journals. (I also have some German Journals)
When we first approached the idea of this topic, the first thought was simply put them up as full yearly Journals or whatever I have but then once I started going through them I knew that interest would be low. With the pages of "new issues", advertisements, club business, etc, sometimes it takes some hunting to find the articles and also the little tidbits I've posted on another thread. Also as you notice some articles (1), (2), etc., indicate they are posted over numerous issues, it takes some doings to find the "continuation," particularly when it continues into another year.
Kelly
A labour of love, Kelly.
I love you.
John "Derry
Thanks John, you made my day!
I hope SOR members will find informative articles in this section that will help with their own collections. One interesting topic is the running set of articles on US Local Issues. I'm not a US collector and didn't realise that there were local issues ever created so I'm sure there are people here who do collect locals for US. The articles, while not meaning anything to me, appear to be quite informative in regards to genuine and counterfeits of these issues.
Kelly
I just added a very interesting article from February 20th, 1871 entitled Commencement of the Confederate Postal Service
It is an interesting read for everyone, to see how difficult it was to pass letters during the American Civil War and ultimately some innovative ideas
Kelly
I'm pleased to announce that we currently have 60 articles published in this new section. My heartfelt thank you to everyone who has responded with such a positive feeling towards having these articles as part of SOR archives. ♥♥♥
The information is awesome A great deal of work....thankyou for putting them on our FABULOUS site!!!! Cheryl
I know that we have a number of native French speakers here in SOR and I was wondering if you would like me to print some of the French articles in French (they will also be translated into English at a later time, for our English readers).
If any of you would like this option, please let me know here and I'll happily provide them in the Archives.
Kelly
Along with some other articles, I just uploaded an article entitled "A Postage Stamp Story." I think everyone will enjoy reading it. It is told from the perspective of a postage stamp. What a story this postage stamp has to tell. I hope you all enjoy it!
Here's a good one for you guys Stamp Collecting in the Future written in April 1886. It blends in perfectly with our own continual discussion of "what is the future of stamp collecting?" I think you'll enjoy it
Just wanted to give you an update - I've uploaded 11 new articles, including some interesting ones about the Confederate Postal System and the Pony Express.
Hope you are all enjoying the articles.
Kelly
A quick update that I've uploaded several articles on the early stamps of the Cape of Good Hope as well as the Laureated Reprints of New South Wales.
My apologies for my tardiness in recent uploads.
Hope you all enjoy!!!
Kelly

Kelly

For our French speaking members, I just uploaded another article that I haven't finished translating into English. I quite enjoyed it myself and thought you might as well. It is Les Timbres-Poste Envisagés au Point de Vue Artistique (Postage Stamps Viewed as Works of Art).
Well my friends, I've finished 6 more articles for your enjoyment.

Question for our French readers - I am including some articles in French that I have not yet had a chance to translate. I know there are some SOR members who are more fluent in French than English.
Which do you prefer -
1 - Place the French articles within the alphabetical list of current articles
or
2 - Place the French articles in separate section?
Kelly
I've recently had a chance to put together some more articles for this section that I hope to upload within a few days. Once again you will find a number of articles that directly relate to recent discussions here on the SOR discussion board. It never ceases to amaze me to see identical queries and responses today and those discussed over 100 years ago - most with the same responses
I extend my thank you and my hand to all those who have provided me with encouraging support of this work.
I have just uploaded 16 new articles - well "new" for us but over 100 years old

David
Kelly is indeed a meticulous, tireless and priceless asset to Stamporama. Thank you so very much Kelly!
Bobby
Kelly may well be tireless, but she wears me out! I'm glad she's on my team!
Bob
Thanks guys
Kelly,
Thanks so much for this. As a student of history, there is so much to read in these articles that goes just beyond the advice and opinion of the day. As you said in a much earlier post, the problems of yesterday are our problems of today. So true on so many levels.
Andrew
Kelly, I scan all the new "Last Day" posts every day, and I don't know how I missed this one back in August! What a great gift to collectors! A belated but much appreciated Thank You from another history fan.
The article on the future on philately is particularly interesting to see what they projected 100 years ago. Of course no-one could have anticipated internet buying and selling, CTO issues, or Michael Numbers' summary of Scott Catalogues; however, in other respects "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" eh? I thought this ending statement was particularly interesting:
"But none of us know what the future may have in store for philately, and indeed in the onward march of invention it is not at all improbable that some new and improved system of prepayment of postage may be devised which will entirely do away with the use of stamps, so that but for collectors their very existence might be forgotten a few centuries hence."
Ten new articles, my friends! Enjoy - there's a couple of REALLY great ones in this lot.
A Great Find: One of the Greatest Rareties Unearthed in Montreal - British Guiana 2c
A Short History of the United States Post Office (5)
A Stamp Dealers Reminiscences Written from Actual Experience or Reliable Information: The Romance of a 12 Pence Canada
Collecting Revenues
Historical and Fiscal Matters of the Duchies of Modena, Parma and Tuscany, Italy
History of the Confederate States Post Office (4)
On the Selection of an Album - Interesting Article on Creating a Stamp Album
Revenue Department
The Model Stamp Collector - I think this Article describes EVERY MEMBER of SOR!!
The Two Cent Navy Error
I am happy to announce that SOR has a new feature (listed on the home page as Historic Articles). This page contains links to dozens of articles taken from Philatelic Journals of the 1800s that are in the public domain. These currently include American, British and French Journals (translated into English) and hopefully in the future will include articles from other language Journals.
If you find an error in translation or typos, please let us know so they can be corrected. With few exceptions, the English text has been copied as is, even when the spelling differs from our modern English spelling.
You will find articles of great historical points such as the Legislature of Vermont that dates to 1784, humourous tidbits, philatelic gossip and much more. There are a number of articles that reflect "how to collect," "what to collect," and "how to arrange a collection," all of which have been active discussions amongst our own members here at SOR over the past year (and beyond). Needless to say as I've been working on these articles, I find myself chuckling to see that so many discussions SOR members have had were addressed 150 years ago and the results were the same - inconclusive!!
Please enjoy our new Historic Philatelic Articles and we look forward to your feedback here.
One of my favourite articles is Our Postage Stamp Portrait Gallery (2) - Isabella of Spain, I found myself chuckling through the entire transcription
