You can include a link to the Photobucket image or album in your post, but you cannot use the Photobucket code, nor can you embed the image in your post directly from Photobucket using the IMG tag Photobucket provides.
There are various reasons for doing this, but they all have in common the theme of protecting the integrity of the board from outside code.
In order to put the actual picture in your post, download the picture to your computer (or just start with your original) and, at the appropriate place in your post, click on the "upload image" button and follow the prompts to upload the image. Note that there are file size restrictions on images. Look at the "General" link above and follow "uploading images"
In order to post a hot link, past the URL into your post and then highlight it. While the URL is highlighted, click on the "Link" button below your editing window. This will add the code to make your link clickable.
Use the "Test Area" for trials.

I just discovered that is IS possible to link directly to an image on another server.
It is documented here.
It cannot be done automatically, like the upload feature. The code must be entered manually.
In my own opinion, I think it is a feature that should probably be removed, as it is seldom, if ever used, and will return broken images if the original image expires or is removed from the other server.
Roy
I have found that I prefer when individuals actually post their pictures directly onto the SOR board rather than using an outside source. The reason is - if it is something that you want identified, the information provided by members is helpful for future readers of the post but if your outside source is no longer available, then the information is of no assistance to future readers. So many images of stamps and covers include a lot of pertinent information including research that members have individually done to help answer the questions involved with the thread, historical references, etc., etc.

P.S. Welcome to SOR!
Hi Ningpo;
Yes Roy is correct about the problems with linking with other sites. Also Photobucket images are very slow to load into other locations. Probably why their service is free.
Whenever I encounter a slow as molasses load time, I glance at the status bar at the bottom of my browser page. If I see the word "photobucket" anywhere down there in the URL address, I first hit the stop button, and then the back button. I have better things to do than watch a blank screen. I would much rather watch grass grow!!!
I have generally found that the best resolution for scanning is 400-600 dpi. then after editing and cleaning up my image (sharpness contrast and brightness), I Re-sample it down to 800 or less pixels wide. When a high dpi image is re-sampled down to 25-30% of original size it tends to sharpen the image nicely. If it is wider than 800 pixels in the message board, viewers will have to scroll to see it all. In approval books, or auctions it can be up to 900 pixels without the need to scroll.
I was not aware of China taking over Hong Kong. Tonights CBS evening news had a piece about demonstrations in Hong Kong. They want Democracy and do not want Beijing telling them who will be in charge of their country. I can't believe that we let this happen, when we are so protective of Taiwan's Independence.
It's too bad Margaret Thatcher was not in charge, in 1997. Remember what she did when Argentina thought they were going to take the Falklands away from England?

Thank you for all your responses. My question also served another purpose: to check the ground rules. I'm sure that I saw a reference to Photobucket usage when I was trawling through the guidelines but there was some ambiguity.
One of your replies seems to suggest that the images uploaded here from one's PC, are 'cast in stone'. Is that right? I don't want to inadvertently erase an image uploaded to the board, by moving/deleting the source image from my PC.
I fully appreciate the comments about Photobucket (and others) and now know where I stand.
Ken,
Unfortunately, the British government were not really in a position to rattle their sabres over the handover. Hong Kong was leased from China and that expired in 1997. The British never owned the colony. Any form of muscle from 'us' would have been seen as an act of aggression.
Re-negotiation of a new lease would probably have stalled. After all, the British didn't exactly endear themselves by introducing opium to the masses in the early days (get the population addicted to the drug and you have paved the way for a nice trading relationship.).
Anyway, it did provide me with a good cut-off point. As with many countries, new issues become a burden, both in cost and volume. Hong Kong seems to issue stamps like GB; every time the moon changes shape. I have enough trouble playing catch-up as it is.
Edit:
Thank you Ken for this:

Ningpo,
If you copy the image from your PC, it becomes part of your SOR image file (on the "Members" page click on "image upload" to access your image files on SOR) and as long as you do not delete the image from your SOR image file, it will remain on the board.
If, on the other hand, you link to a file you have stored elsewhere, once you remove that stored file, it disappears from the board.
Hope this helps.
Thank you very much. All is clear.

You're quite right Peter. Shame on my broad brush comments.
I have tried Photobucket several times and found the only speed there was "turtle" speed. Also, I can't understand why anyone would want to scan any item at one resolution, clean it up, or whatever and then re-scan it at another resolution. Why not scan it one time and be happy with that scan. I use a different program and scan all of my items at 200dpi, only one time, do the necessary cropping, alignment and such, then very quickly reduce it down and save it. It's sort of like wham, bam, thank you Sam! I have tried using only 100 dpi, but don't like how small the scan looked at the end, so use that 200 and reduce it back. Plus, I have the benefit of having all of my scans on my computer and don't have to rely on another website to hassle with trying to retrieve scans. I have many thousands of scans, not only for SOR auctions, on my computer and attempt to keep the files cleaned of outdated items, but that is always a works in progress. Using my system, I don't think I can utilize the bulk up-loader on the auction site, since my files are on my own computer, but there is no way I want to depend on Photobucket's slow speed for uploading scans to the bulk up-loader.

Mike
Hi Mike;
I think you misread my reply about the scans. Scanning at a high resolution makes editing easier. Reducing the image has nothing whatever to do with scanning, and is part of the editing of the scan.
After doing edits; brightness/contrast/sharpen, I right-click on the image in "Corel Photo-Paint 8" (a $600 professional graphic application similar to PhotoShop), and the top selection is "resample", I simply Type in the horizontal pixels as either 800 or 900, and click okay, "very quickly". The results are a very high quality image, with only one SCAN and one EDIT. From your description, You are probably doing the same thing, but just mis-read my reply.
You have some nice stamps in your auctions by the way.

Point well taken.
I feel that we probably should not have invaded either Iraq or Afghanistan. Had we used drones there like we have in Yemen and Pakistan to take out terrorists, maybe that would have been a cheaper way of getting the bad guys dead.
Eventually the Arab Spring would have freed a lot of folks from fundamentalists who would kill someone, just because of their religion. If they are not willing to die for their own freedom them we shouldn't be either.
Anyway, shame on me for turning a forum into a discussion on politics. Unfortunately some socio-political events spill over into our hobby when they influence themes depicted on stamps. Thankfully tho, not very often.
We should smuggle postage stamps into those Arab countries, with stickum on the back, flavored to taste like pork.

I apologise if this has been covered but I can't find a specific answer.
Am I able to reference images on these hosting sites within my posts. If so, how?
I have been tinkering with Photobucket, using direct links, IMG codes etc. but non seem to work.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
