Aren't most modern postal buildings bland--especially in comparison to older ones? Danbury, CT has a fine, classic structure on Main Street, but it is only open as a concession to the city. The replacement is an ugly, warehouse-style structure way on the west side of the city, and not terribly accessible (yes, I have used it). The town of New Milford has a lovely Depression-era PO on Bridge Street that now houses NM Parks & Rec and a couple of other town agencies. The current PO on Main Street is a nondescript brick structure with no aesthetic appeal. And neither one is terribly accessible in today's automobile-centric world. Plus there never seem to be any commemoratives in stock, there's always a long line with 1 of 3 windows open, parking can be a hassle, etc. The old PO does have a fine wooden Depression-era carving, however.

I just have to share this, as I recently came across this photo of the old Hong Kong General Post Office. This was built in 1911 and demolished in 1976; I remember as a child going with my mother to buy stamps in this stately Edwardian style building with its musty odor and poor lighting. But it had character and I think contributed to my love of older stamps.
The new post office is a bland comparison.
