I think this is a cancel, not an overprint, but I could be wrong. Anyone know what this is on this stamp?

Thanks.
Peter

Thanks Nigel. Is this France Scott #115 with the precancel? Or is there a special number for this?

Good question Peter,

Let's see if I can answer it.

First of all Maury lists it separately as precancel 62 (and as Dallay precancel 43).

Despite what I said in my last post I see it was issued in May 1929 (and is listed with sower design stamps first issued in 1927).

Yes, I agree that the basic stamp is Maury 233 / Dallay 251 / SG 413a / Sc #115.

All the best,
Nigel

Peter, the only time that Scott gives a separate catalog number to a precanceled stamp (not including specialized listings like in the US Specialized catalog) is when the precancel also includes a surcharge, like several stamps from Belgium.

re: France: Identify cancel please

Y&T has a whole section on precancelled stamps for France. There are (as of my 2007 catalog) 250+ distinctive precancelled French stamps, not counting varieties. This one is Y&T #42. It's a fun area to collect, but beware of counterfeits.

For France, the only time you find them in Scott is when the stamp is only issued as a pre cancel, like Scott #114, Scott #431, Scott #707-710 etc..
