Just a simple poll question. Collecting state stamps, I must say I truly dislike these stamps. ('02 State Greetings) They remind me of those "old Fun Maps." (Don't know if those are still around, but am I wrong? (Curiosity, nothing more)

I'm not fully clear about the State Stamps to which you refer. Remember that each state issues separate stamps for a variety of products-all under the TAXPAID heading.(Liquor,Hunting/Fishing,Stocks,beverages & fruits of all sorts, etc.)

Or were you referring to the two different issues(I think) on travel to the different states?

The 2 issues of 2002, pane of fifty 34c stamps and pane of fifty 37c stamps, were known as the Greetings from America set.

They were colorful, but I have to admit I didn't like them either. In fact, that was the issue that killed my interest in collecting matched position panes of 50-setenant panes. I had been doing that since the 50 state flags pane. I never went back to that specialized area after that.

Yes, those Fun Maps are still around. You can still see them in souvenir/gift shops at tourist spots. They're a LOT more expensive than they used to be, that's for sure. I like the older ones better -- they usually had more detail and funny caricatures/cartoons.

Thanks KHJ for the clarification. Those issues were generally collected as postally used and gave collectors a run for their money to collect the complete issue. Sort of like trying to duplicate the original ROUTE 66 places of old in stamps. Just a fun exercise for stampers.

re: 2002 Greetings From (state stamps)

Good point about the postally used.

I'll add on to that headache for collectors of used. The main reason both panes were issued in 2002 was the rate change. The 34c stamp was replaced by the 37c stamp 2 months later. If you wanted to collect postally used stamps with proper time of usage postmarks, you had a relatively short window of less than 90 days for all 50 of the 34c stamps. My guess is that the philatelic usages (FDCs...) and post-30Jun2002 usages far outnumber the proper time of usage stamps.

But then again, there are collectors that actually enjoy doing that. So I'm not knocking it. One collector's frustrations are another collector's adventures.

The intent of the "Greetings" issue was to commemorate those "visit place name of state here" postcards. I liked the issue. Wasn't thrilled about the second issue with the increased rates, though.

Here is a useful workaround until you can update your catalog.
