Can anyone tell me about these cinderella stamps? Was there actually mail carried on a balloon flight that these commemorate? Are they listed in any catalog? What would their value be?

re: 1988 Balloon Flight?

Terry, I found this listing from a 1996 Christie's catalogue:

Lot Description
Republican National Committee Balloon 'Stamp' labels, (so-called Reagan signature stamps), sixteen mint sets (32 labels), a total of fifteen labels 'cancelled' by green cachet ink and two cacheted 'flight' covers (each 'franked' with a set of two labels and a 25c Bread Wagon coil single), each cover bearing red 'Scarborough Sta - Briarcliff, N.Y. USPS Jun 26, 1988' double circle pmk., each has green illustrated 'Republican Senatorial Inner Circle First Manned Balloon Flight' cachet, very fine est. $60 - $80
Price realized $127

re: 1988 Balloon Flight?

I have seen these labels on eBay with a 99c start. I did not follow them to the end.
But given the amount of items on offer in the Christies auction, 99c -$2 is most likely about right.

If you want to see something funny, go here. The guy has most likely had all those offers of 99c and turned them down !! He will be there forever !!

EDIT: After posting the link, I scrolled down on the ebay item and read the description !! Wow ! Terry, you must be well pleased. Not sure whether I can believe all the seller said and a lot of it is pure propaganda, but it's extremely heavy is it not !!??
Still, with 30,000 labels printed, the Christies sale is about right and I doubt they have gone up more today. That is if we can believe all we have read !

re: 1988 Balloon Flight?

Wow, that eBay seller sure knows how to blow hot air!

I've seen a number of high priced collections on eBay (legitimate collections) and I've never seen a seller demand the buyer to see the collection in person. True, if a buyer is spending that much money they could request a scan of every page of the collection. If it simply contained hundreds of full sheets of the same stamp why would they need to see it in person?

Now unless this was some long lost hidden collection of sheets of the Penny Black, Zeppelins, Inverted Jenny (uh, the original one here guys Happy ), no one would pay that.

But congrats to the seller for having a platform to blow his hot air and the hot air balloon to go with it!
