I've been poking around with nice NYC postmarks, well centred on stamps, for some time, now. I've googled all over the place, but am still looking for an historical (1930 - 1970) listing of the post offices of NYC.

Any suggestions?

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks in advance,

David

Have you tried the Philatelic Union Catalog at the APRL http://catalog.stamplibrary.org/InmagicGenie/opac.aspx or Jim Forte's Postal History site http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp? I use Jim Forte's site all the time in my postal history pursuits.

Like I said in another message--there is much about computers I don't get, & making the links work seems to be beyond me (I even checked the FAQ and still couldn't make it work). Once I get something wrong I get set that way & cannot see a way out. I used to curse & scream at command line and DOS.

You might try the National Postal Museum web site.

You also might find the NY study group on the APS site (stamps.org), and contact them for information.

re: New York City Postmarks

Smith & Kay wrote a book on New York Post Offices. I have a copy, but anything to tese messages. I don't have it handy. I will note to look at it when I go to my Library.

Lots of NYC postmarks are in the The Willett-Thompson Collection on CD from the Postmark Collectors Club.

I also have a good list of NYC in the Machine Cancel Societies Database, if which I am the manager. I could send you a copy of that, but I don't know how to attach them to this message. I will try to learn and get back to you.

David, here is an article that may be of interest. It has a map showing all the pneumatic mail post offices in NYC during the period you mentioned. Not certain if the postmarks had any type of special feature to show pneumatic use.
